* Allchin (Sir William Henry, 1846-1912). An archive of letters, 1867-1880, a collection of 57 autograph letters signed written to or concerning Sir William Henry Allchin, some of several pages, many preserved in later envelopes identifying the writer on the front, comprising: 16 letters written by Michael Foster to his assistant Allchin; 15 letters supporting Allchin's application for the post of Surgeon on Brunel's steamship SS Great Western in 1869; 2 letters from Robert Halpin, Commander of the SS Great Eastern and Leader of the British India Telegraph Expedition, both expressing high praise for Allchin's consummate skill during the voyage which was completed "without loss of life or limb", one addressed to Sir James Anderson and written from SS Investigation, Malta, September 1, 1871; 13 letters written by eminent physicians in support of Allchin's application for the post of Medical Registrar at Westminster Hospital in 1871; 3 letters of testimonial regarding Allchin's application to be Assistant Physician to Metropolitan Hospitals; 7 letters written in support of Allchin's application to be Assistant Physician to the Victorian Hospital for Sick Children in 1874; and a letter congratulating Allchin on the occasion of his marriage in 1880, signed by 10 of his pupils at Westminster Hospital, thanking him for his teaching and kindness and begging his "acceptance of the accompanying present", together with Doctor Allchin's calling card (Qty: 58)NOTESSir William Henry Allchin FRCP, FRSE was an eminent English physician, lecturer and author. He trained at University College, London, following which time he became assistant to the Professor of Physiology there, Sir Michael Foster (1836-1907). He subsequently served as Chief Surgeon on the SS Great Eastern, Brunel's great steamship, on a voyage to lay telegraph cable to India. He joined Westminster Hospital as a Medical Registrar in 1872 and worked there for over 30 years, becoming physician, lecturer and Dean. He edited and contributed to a number of medical publications, including the well-known journal A Manual of Medicine of which he was editor from 1900 to 1903. Allchin was awarded a number of honours, culminating in a knighthood in 1907, and in 1910 he became Physician Extraordinary to King George V. Sir William was clearly held in high regard by colleagues and pupils alike. By all accounts he was a gifted teacher and an extremely skilful and diligent doctor. The letters from his onetime boss, Michael Foster, are generally direct and instructional in tone: "please call at Kings to see if I can have any frog's spawn", "I find no trace of Baker's ¼ here - make a row about it - it won't do to have the thieving begin again", "tell Plumb to get 1 doz frogs", "will you tell John to get me a dog - tomorrow if possible & feed him well". The letters of recommendation speak of Allchin in the most glowing terms, and are written by such worthies as: Sir Richard Quain, Surgeon Extraordinary to Queen Victoria; epidemiologist Sir George Buchanan; Sir William Jenner, Physician in Ordinary to Queen Victoria; Francis Anstie; neurologist Henry Charlton Bastian; and Wilson Fox, Physician Extraordinary to Queen Victoria.
