c.1953 Phillips Bicycle with Lohmann clip-on diesel engineFrame no. T140092Engine no. 38787For further information on this lot please visit the Bonhams websiteThis lot is to be sold without reserve. This Lot consists of a Phillips gentleman's bicycle and Lohmann clip-on engine. The Lohmann took its name from company founder, German-born Karl Lohmann, who founded a bicycle-making business in London in 1892, which was soon followed by another production plant at Bielefeld in Germany. Lohmann bicycle products, including Perfecta acetylene lamps, were soon being sold widely throughout Europe and the UK. Its UK assets having been seized during WWI, the firm had no choice but to continue the German side of its business. Development of the clip-on bicycle engine, designed by Hermann Teegen, commenced in the late 1940s. Unusually, this 18cc unit was a two-stroke diesel, with revs controlled by altering the compression ratio via a twistgrip. Weighing a mere 5kg, the Lohmann had a maximum output of 0.75 PS (one horsepower), which was good enough for a top speed of 25km/h. The Lohmann engine would prove to be immensely successful; agencies were established in Italy, Spain and Switzerland, while in the UK the Lohmann was briefly used by Britax. An older restoration, this Lohmann-powered Phillips bicycle is offered with magazine articles (in German) and a manufacturer's brochure and instruction manual. It should be noted that these vehicles have either been on display in the museum or kept in store since Peter and Ulrike passed away. Their present mechanical condition is not known; accordingly, perspective bidders must satisfy themselves with regards to their condition, completeness, correctness, or otherwise prior to bidding. 1953 Vincent 998cc Series-C RapideFrame no. RC9788/C Rear frame no. RC9788/CEngine no. F10AB/1/7888 Crankcase mating no. VV75For further information on this lot please visit the Bonhams website•Delivered new to Germany•Matching numbers•Optional left-side kickstart leverThe outbreak of WW2 in 1939 brought production of all Series A models to a halt, and when Vincent resumed production at the war's end it was with the all-new Series B. Its rear suspension aside, the Series A Vincent-HRD had been conventional enough: tubular steel frame, girder forks, separate gearbox, etc but with the Series B Messrs Vincent and Irving effectively established the marque's reputation for the defiance of convention in the pursuit of engineering excellence. For a start there was no 'frame' as such, merely a fabricated box attached to the cylinder heads, that served as the oil tank and incorporated the headstock and the attachment point for the rear springs. The gearbox was integral with the engine, and the swinging arm pivoted directly in the engine/gearbox casings, features commonplace today but unusual 60 years ago. Only in his retention of the pre-war Brampton girder fork did Phillip Vincent appear to be lagging behind other manufacturers, almost all of which had switched to telescopics, but this apparent shortcoming would soon be addressed by the introduction of the famous 'Girdraulic' fork on the Series C.Introduced in 1946, the Vincent-HRD Rapide Series B was immediately the fastest production motorcycle on sale anywhere, with a top speed of 110mph. The basic design clearly had even greater potential though, which would be realised later in the form of the Black Shadow and Black Lightning models. In 1948 the Vincent range began to be up-dated to Series C specification but it would be 1950 before all Vincents left the factory in this form. An older restoration, this matching-numbers Vincent Rapide was registered new in Germany and comes with its original German registration document (issued 1953). The machine was despatched from the Vincent factory in December 1951 to a dealership called RM Overseas in Düsseldorf, Germany. Interestingly, this Rapide has the optional left-hand side kickstart lever, which indicates it may have been fitted with a sidecar in the past (for Germany that would mean on the right side, so the standard kickstart could not be used). The factory records make no mention of sidecar fittings or a left-side kickstart, so it is probably an owner's modification. The Rapide left the factory with a 46-tooth rear sprocket, which was standard solo gearing. La documentation jointe comprend de la correspondance, des articles de magazines (en allemand), un manuel d'atelier BMS, un manuel d'atelier original et un c... c.1924 Ner-a-Car 285ccFrame no. 3797Engine no. 4845For further information on this lot please visit the Bonhams website•Purchased in 2001•Original factory paintwork and transfer•Eligible for the Banbury Run and Graham Walker RunDespite the demonstrable advantages of hub centre steering and the fact that the system has appeared at regular intervals since motorcycling's earliest days, there had only ever been one machine - before the advent of Yamaha's GTS - that made it into volume production: the Ner-a-Car. Invented by American Carl A Neracher in 1919, the machine was built under licence in the UK by Sheffield Simplex, using part of what had been the Sopwith Aviation works in Kingston-on-Thames. The basic design remained unaltered - pressed-steel chassis, voluminous front mudguard, hub-centre-steering, friction drive transmission - but whereas US-built models were powered by a two-stroke engine of 221cc, Sheffield Simplex chose to fit their own 285cc unit. Four-stroke sidevalve and (later) overhead-valve 350cc Blackburne-engined versions equipped with conventional three-speed gearboxes followed. Endowed with excellent handling and weather protection, the Ner-a-Car was a great success, production only ceasing in 1926 because of problems within other parts of the Sheffield Simplex group. This highly original example was purchased at Bonhams & Brooks' Stafford sale in October 2001 (Lot 586). Our description was as follows: 'Last taxed for the road in 1932, this 285cc Ner-a-Car is reported to have been owned by a Somerset lady, who, having fallen off it once, never road it again. Offered for restoration and sold strictly as viewed, the machine is described as in 'very original' condition and comes with an original (1924) owner's manual.' Boasting its original factory paintwork and transfer, the machine carries a 1932 tax disc and features an original Gough Ner-a-Car saddle and Halford horn. It should be noted that these vehicles have either been on display in the museum or kept in store since Peter and Ulrike passed away. c.1923 Nimbus 746cc Four Frame no. 319Engine no. N686For further information on this lot please visit the Bonhams website•Purchased in 1998•An older restoration•German registration plateThe result of diversification by the Danish vacuum cleaner manufacturer, Fisker & Nnielsen, the Nimbus motorcycle first appeared in 1919. Unusually, only inline four-cylinder models were built. These were of advanced design, using shaft final drive and pressed steel frames right from the start of production, and pioneered the use of the telescopic front fork in the mid-1930s. The early models featured a distinctive tubular spine frame that doubled as the fuel tank, soon gaining the nickname 'stovepipe'. Motorcycle production was suspended in 1928 to enable the company to concentrate on producing its Nilfisk vacuum cleaners, and when the new Nimbus appeared in 1934 it was with a power unit that showed strong motor-industry influence, being constructed along car lines with integral crankcase/cylinder block in cast iron and a detachable alloy sump. The cast-iron cylinder head was topped by an alloy housing for the single overhead camshaft, which was driven by shaft-and-bevel gears. A single-plate clutch transmitted power to the three-speed gearbox. Foot change for the gearbox, a beefier front fork and larger brakes had been added by the end of the 1930s, but from then on the Nimbus changed little until series production was ended in 1954, once again to free up resources for the vacuum cleaner business. An additional few machines were assembled from spares between 1954 and 1959 but none have been made since then. Production was always on a limited scale but such is the quality of the Nimbus that many remain in service today. An older restoration, this 'stovepipe' Nimbus was purchased at Brooks' Stafford sale in October 1998 (Lot 354) having been offered from a significant continental private collection. At that time the machine was described as 'restored to a high standard many years ago' and presented in 'nicely mellowed' condition. Re-commissioning was advised following a lengthy period of inactivity. Notable features include a German registration plate ('IP-45842') and a Hella acetylene headlamp. 1910 Triumph 499ccFrame no. 152521Engine no. 8567For further information on this lot please visit the Bonhams website•Purchased circa 1992•An older restoration•Pioneer CertificateThe first Triumph motorcycle of 1902 used a Belgian Minerva engine, but within a few years the Coventry firm - originally bicycle manufacturers - was building its own power units. The company was soon involved in racing, and the publicity generated by competition success - Jack Marshall won the 1908 Isle of Man TT's single-cylinder class for Triumph - greatly stimulated sales. By the outbreak of the Great War the marque's reputation for quality and reliability was well-established, leading to substantial orders for 'Trusty Triumphs' for British and Allied forces. The 3½hp model first appeared in 1907. Originally of 453cc, its sidevalve engine was enlarged to 476cc in 1908, and finally to 499cc in 1910 before being superseded by the 4hp (550cc) model in 1914. Like rival manufacturers, Triumph were keen to exploit their Isle of Man credentials and added the TT Replica - a stripped-down, single-speed, sports roadster - to the range. An older restoration that has mellowed nicely, this Edwardian Triumph motorcycle was purchased at a UK auction circa 1992 (catalogue page on file). The machine has lost its previous UK registration 'N 5369' and been reregistered as 'BS 8158' (see the old-style UK V5 registration document on file). It should be noted that these vehicles have either been on display in the museum or kept in store since Peter and Ulrike passed away. 'Wanderer' was the brand name of Winkelhofer & Jaenicke, a bicycle-making firm founded in Chemnitz, Saxony around 1885 and, like those of many of its contemporaries, its first motorised two-wheeler of 1902 was merely a power-assisted cycle. By 1913 the range had expanded considerably and was topped by a 408cc v-twin. Distinguished by their wedge-shaped fuel tanks, these early Wanderer twins were of an advanced specification for their day, boasting bottom-link forks, sprung frames, two-speed hub gears, automatic lubrication and an internal expanding rear drum brake. A 184cc four-stroke lightweight was added to the range after The Great War. This boasted overhead valves and unitary construction of the horizontal engine/gearbox, and Wanderer continued to build a range of similarly advanced designs until the end of the 1920s when motorcycle production ceased, although a range of ultra-lightweights was produced during the 1930s.An older restoration, this lovely example of Wanderer's 1.5 PS horizontal single boasts a two-speed gearbox and a Weidner, Stegler Co headlamp. Accompanying paperwork includes brochures; a magazine article; an original parts list and instruction manual (in German); and a purchase receipt (undated).Ancienne restauration, ce bel exemplaire de Wanderer à moteur monocylindre horizontal 1 ½ HP bénéficie d'une boîte à deux rapports et d'un phare Weidner, Stegler Co.. G7BT 321668For further information on this lot please visit the Bonhams website•First Ford commercial vehicle to use the 'Transit' name•Formerly owned by two municipalities in Germany•Used occasionally by the Bühner family for surfing trips•Much rarer than the equivalent VolkswagenNot to be confused with the Ford Transit introduced in 1965, which had been developed jointly by Ford of Britain and Ford Werke AG of Germany, the German-designed and built FK 1000 of 1953 was the first Ford product to wear the 'Transit' badge. This German-built van started out with a 1.2-litre engine (FK 1000) before gaining a 1.5-litre unit (FK 1250) in 1955, while in 1961 the Ford Werke's existing 'Taunus' brand name was added. Production of the Taunus Transit ceased in 1965 on the introduction of its much better known and considerably more successful namesake. First registered on 21st August 1962, this Ford Taunus Transit was first owned by the Freiwillige Feuerwehr: the voluntary fire brigade of the city of Donauwörth in Bavaria. In 1978 the vehicle changed hands, passing to the nearby municipality of Marxheim, again in Bavaria. The purpose of the vehicle is recorded as Schlauchwagen, literally translated as hose carrier. Presented in remarkably solid but un-restored condition, the Transit is still in its Marxheim Fire Brigade livery, complete with blue light. The odometer reading is 13,629 kilometres and might well be original. The family reports that the van was used on occasion for surfing trips, and surely was and will be a head turner wherever it goes. It is offered with its original German Kraftfahrzeugbrief, recording only the two aforementioned municipalities as owners; an original workshop manual; and a magazine article relating to the model. A much rarer alternative to the ubiquitous offerings from Volkswagen. Il est proposé muni de son certificat d'immatriculation allemand d'origine, qui ne mentionne comme précédents propriétaires que l... 1926 Hanomag 2/10 PS Kleinauto 'Kommissbrot' Saloon Project Chassis no. 6307For further information on this lot please visit the Bonhams website•One of the most successful German light cars of its day•One of Peter Bühner's last projects•Offered for restoration•A rare survivorHannoversche Maschinenfabrik AG (Hanomag) was founded in 1846 as a constructor of steam locomotives, and went on to build commercial vehicles, cars, tractors, etc. Hanomag's first motor car was launched in 1925: this was the 2/10 PS two-seater 'Kommissbrot' (literally 'army bread'), so called because its shape resembled that of an army-issue loaf. The 2/10 PS was powered by a rear-mounted 499cc 10hp single-cylinder water-cooled engine, which drove the rear axle by a chain (there was no differential). Keeping weight to a minimum was a design priority, and the first (open) version weighed only 370kg. A closed version followed later. Top speed was around 60km/h. Named 'Zweisitzer Limousine' (two-seat limousine) by the company, the Hanomag 'Kommissbrot' is historically significant as the first German car to be manufactured on a moving assembly line, as pioneered by Ford; in 1927 and 1928 Hanomag were building 80 cars per day. Production ceased after three years when 15,775 had been made, very few of which survive. Despite being the best selling car in Germany at the time, the 'Kommissbrot' did not make any money for Hanomag, which turned to more conventional cars that would help it into financial stability. This charming Hanomag 'Kommissbrot' was one of Peter Bühner's last projects and has not been completed. This is potentially most rewarding project, but interest parties should satisfy themselves with regard to its completeness or otherwise prior to bidding. The car is offered with a cancelled German Kraffahrzeugbrief dating from 1966, an original owner's manual (German language), and numerous magazine articles relating to the model. A very modern looking car for its age, '6307' is one of the very rare surviving 2/10 PS models and is worthy of a place in any important collection. For further information on this lot please visit the Bonhams website
1958 Mercedes-Benz Unimog 411 4x4 Utility Chassis no. 411 1107503374For further information on this lot please visit the Bonhams website•Iconic German 4x4•1,767cc diesel engine and eight-speed gearbox•Acquired for the Bühner Collection in 2007•German registration papersDesigned in the aftermath of WW2 Albert Friedrich and Heinrich Rößler, and still in production today, the Unimog 4x4 was intended to serve the needs of the agricultural community but, like the contemporary Land Rover, ended up filling an almost limitless variety of other roles. Production started in 1948 at the Boehringer factory in Göppingen, Germany. One of the Unimog's more unusual design features was a flexible chassis frame, effectively part of the suspension, while the equal-sized wheels meant that it was better suited for highway use than a conventional tractor. Power take-offs were provided to enable the Unimog to operate a wide variety of machinery: brush mowers, snow blowers, etc. Manufactured by Mercedes-Benz since 1951, the versatile Unimog has seen service with fire departments, municipal authorities, aid agencies and armies worldwide, and has won the truck class of the Dakar Rally more than once. The original Unimog '70200' was a small agricultural tractor a little over 3.5 metres long, which offered only the protection of a canvas roof for the driver. However, the engine's maximum output of only 25DIN/PS (24.6bhp) proved insufficient for many applications, prompting the introduction of an improved '411' model soon after Daimler-Benz took over Unimog manufacture. Improvements included a longer wheelbase, a proper cab, and more powerful engines of up to 34DIN/PS (33.5bhp). The vehicle offered here is an example of the '411' series, the ultimate version of the traditional Unimog. Purchased by Peter Bühner for the collection in 2007, this most attractive Unimog with the short wheelbase and canvas convertible top is equipped with a 1,767 cc four-cylinder diesel engine producing some 34 horsepower at 2,750rpm via an eight-speed gearbox. An older restoration which presents very well, the vehicle is offered with German registration papers; an original user manual (in German); and numerous magazine articles relating to the model. A rare opportunity to acquire one of these most practical of classic vehicles. Chinese Art A jade and semi-precious stone imperial necklace (Cao Zhu). China, Qing dynasty, early 19th century. . Cm 123,00. Important devotional artifact made of green jade, amethyst and coral beads. The Cao Zhu is a rosary based on Buddhist models that was introduced in official ceremonies by the Qing dynasty emperors, as recorded in the codex "Illustrated Regulations for the Ceremonial Paraphernalia in the Qing dynasty" by Huangchao Liqi Tushi. The manual regulated the number of spheres, extensions and materials that could make up this peculiar artifact. The importance of this accessory in official ceremonies is illustrated by a portrait of Emperor Yongzheng, now at the Palace Museum in Beijing, a painting in which the emperor wears a Chao Zhu of pearls.
