Cyma: A World War II Military Wristwatch, signed Cyma, known by collectors as one of "The Dirty Dozen", circa 1944, (calibre 234) manual wound lever movement signed and numbered 392900, dust cover, black dial with luminous Arabic numerals, signed and with a military broad arrow, seconds dial, luminous hands, stainless steel case, screw back engraved with a broad arrow WWW P 24994 29994, inside back cover with repeated numbers, fixed bars between the lugs38mm wide'The Dirty Dozen' is the name given to a group of 12 watches commissioned by the Ministry of Defence for use by soldiers during WWII. The MoD ordered custom-built wristwatches from 12 Swiss watchmakers: Buren, Cyma, Eterna, Grana, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Lemania, Longines, IWC, Omega, Record, Timor and Vertex. Each company was given the specific brief of providing watches that were accurate, reliable and durable, with a black dial, Arabic numerals, luminous markers, a railroad minute track, shatterproof glass and a stainless-steel case. No matter the maker, these watches can be identified by the engraved 'W.W.W.' on the reverse, as well as the broad arrowhead mark on the dial, inner case, and reverse, and both military and civil serial numbers on the reverse.Case with surface scratches, case with minor dents in parts, plexi glass with scratches and cracks, original dial finish has a good patina, luminous markers have discoloured but nicely aged, luminous hands are discoloured, movement is fully wound and not working, balance is not swinging when shaking the watch from side to side, hairspring is bunched and needs attention, hand setting correctly. strap is missing.

Alchemy.- Sendivogius (Michael) A New Light of Alchymy: Taken Out of the Fountain of Nature and Manual Experience. To Which is added a Treatise of Sulphur..., translated by J[ohn] F[rench], second edition in English, with separate titles for Paracelsus's 'Of the Nature of Things' and 'A Chymical Dictionary', with A6-8 'To the Reader' duplicated after the second title, a little soiled and stained, later ruled in blind, rubbed, rebacked with red morocco label, new endpapers, [Ferguson I.257; Wellcome V.80; Wing S2507A], 8vo, by A. Clark, for Tho. Williams, 1674. ⁂ Scarce second edition of French's translation, first published in 1650. Sendivogius was considered by contemporary alchemists to be the true possessor of the philosopher's stone. In orthodox scientific terms the work is important for its discussion of the components of air. "Sendivogius believed that the air contained a hidden life-giving and fire-supporting agent . . . the first idea of the existence of oxygen". (DSB XII, 307).
