LIVINGSTONE (DAVID)Autograph letter signed ('David Livingstone'), to Thomas Clegg ('My dear Sir'), asking him to send a copy of '...the work by Roles and the American cotton planters manual. The work of Dr Royle I believe we can get in London...', asking him to furnish a bed for his brother who is accompanying him on a visit to Manchester ('...to get some knowledge of machinery too... I have an invitation from the Mayor...'), ending by asking him for a copy of his own tract, docketed on reverse in another hand 'Dr Livingstone July 23/57/ To Thos Clegg', 3 pages on a bifolium, dust-staining, creased and marked, remains of guard on reverse and corners where previously mounted, 8vo (182 x 112mm.), Hadley Green, Barnet, 21 July 1857Footnotes:'THE WORK BY ROLES AND THE AMERICAN COTTON PLANTERS MANUAL': David Livingstone gathers expertise on cotton production as he prepares for the second Zambezi expedition. The recipient of this letter, Thomas Clegg (b.1827) was a pioneering Manchester cotton manufacturer, and the first to be actively involved in the promotion of cotton production in Africa for the British market. In partnership with the Rev. Henry Venn of the Church Missionary Society, they sent out missionaries armed with the word of God, cotton seed and equipment, and successfully set up a Cotton Institution in Abeokuta, Nigeria. By encouraging Africans to grow cotton themselves, he hoped to discourage slave traffic by creating an alternative to the American market which was based on slavery, and also to encourage employment and peace between local tribes. The enterprise was hugely successful. By 1851 he had increased Manchester's importation of West African cotton from just ten to over three thousand bales a year. He laid his objectives and successes out in a letter dated 18 March 1858 to McGregor Laird, Chairman of the Africa Steamship Company and published in the Journal of the Society of Arts: '...my operations in Africa were commenced... with the view of putting down the slave-trade by a new but very simple method, viz., convincing the native African chiefs and others that it was their interest to employ their people instead of making war upon each other... and what Dr Livingstone tells us of the East, I can clearly see a prospect of the slave-trade being entirely starved out...' he wrote. Clegg's expertise would have been invaluable to David Livingstone and his brother Charles as they prepared for the second Zambesi expedition which embarked in 1858. It was Charles Livingstone's task to establish and oversee a permanent base of operations in the Highlands beyond the Kafue River. This would involve, amongst other things, the taking of geological observations, the foundation of a missionary school and the conduct of experiments in raising cotton in the area. The Livingstones therefore consulted Clegg to investigate the most suitable varieties of cotton and the appropriate machinery and equipment for the enterprise. Also on Livingstone's list were works by John Forbes Royle, the botanist who had written a series of essays on the manufacture of cotton in India, perhaps referring here to his newly published Review of the Measures which have been Adopted in India for the Improved Culture of Cotton; and Joseph Addison Turner's The Cotton Planter's Manual of 1857. Livingstone's reference to a work by Roles may refer to John Roles, an overseer on some of the largest cotton plantations in the American South. His definitive work, Inside views of slavery on southern plantations, was not published, however, until 1864. Livingstone himself had first-hand experience of the industry, as from the ages of 10 to 26 he had worked at a cotton mill in Blantyre. Our letter is published on the Livingstone Online website.Provenance: The Property of a Lady and Gentleman. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
