Lateinischer Text mit deutschen Einsprengseln in Minuskelschrift. Buchrücken mit ornamental geprägten Ledereinband.Wachstafeln, d.h. mit Wachs beschichtete hochrechteckige Holztafeln, wurden seit der Antike bis hinein in das Spätmittelalter für Aufzeichnungen verschiedenster Art verwendet. Dabei konnten einzelne Tafeln mittels unterschiedlicher Bindungen zu Büchern verbunden werden. Aus dem Spätmittelalter haben sich mehrere Wachstafelbücher erhalten, bei denen in der Regel auf gegenüberliegenden Seiten Pergamentstreifen sowie eine Wachsschicht eingelassen war. So konnten dauerhaften Einträgen überschreibbare aktuelle Notizen gegenübergestellt werden. Bei vorliegendem Büchlein ist jede der bogenförmig abschließenden Innentafeln durch einen Steg in zwei eingetiefte Felder unterteilt. In das linke ist Pergament eingelassen, das rechte ist mit durch Holzkohle geschwärztem Wachs ausgefüllt, das mehrere Notizen in hellerer Schrift aufweist. Die Aufzeichnungen der Pergamentstreifen weisen darauf hin, dass es sich hier um das Manual eines Kellermeisters (Cellerar) von Kloster Polling bei Weilheim handelt. Das im 8. Jahrhundert gegründete Kloster besaß bis zur Säkularisation verschiedene Liegenschaften in Tirol, die an das Kloster jährliche Abgaben zu leisten hatten und den Messwein für das Kloster lieferten. So umfasste etwa der im 12. Jh. als Schenkung überlassene "Pollinger Hof" im heutigen Meraner Stadtteil Untermais zwei Weingärten, die durch einen sog. "Baumann" als Pächter bewirtschaftet wurden. Das Manualbuch führte der Cellerar zur Kontrolle der Weingüter und ihrer Abgaben auf seiner jährlichen Reise nach Tirol mit: Güter befanden sich u.a. in Leutasch, Innsbruck, Klausen bis nach Meran und Umgebung. Jedes Weingut hatte dem Kloster dabei ein bestimmtes Quantum Wein abzugeben, das in Yhrn gemessen wurde. Dabei entsprach 1 Tiroler Yhre etwa 78 Litern. Aus Kloster Polling haben sich zwei weitere ähnlich große Wachstafelbüchlein aus der ersten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts erhalten, die sich heute im Bayerischen Nationalmuseum München (Bibl. 3613) und im Bayerischen Hauptstaatsarchiv München (KL Polling 1b) befinden und sich inhaltlich ebenfalls auf die Abgaben der Klostergüter beziehen. Sprachlich ist besonders das von Sighart transkribierte Exemplar des Bayerischen Nationalmuseums vergleichbar, während das Exemplar des Hauptstaatsarchivs in Deutsch abgefasst ist. Bereits im späten 19. Jahrhundert scheinen derartige Büchlein dabei als typologische Rara betrachtet worden zu sein, denn der Theologe und Kunsthistoriker Joachim Sighart hebt 1864 in seinem Beitrag zum Exemplar des Bayerischen Nationalmuseums hervor, dass dieses "zu den größten Seltenheiten gehören dürfte". Wie das Wachstafelbüchlein in den Besitz von Albert Figdor kam, lässt sich nicht mehr rekonstruieren. Im Zuge der Säkularisation von 1803 wurde die Pollinger Klosterbibliothek aufgelöst, wobei die wertvollsten Bestände in die Münchener Hofbibliothek überführt wurden, vieles wohl aber verstreut wurde. Das heute im Bayerischen Nationalmuseum verwahrte Wachstafelbuch hatte Sighart aus der "Erbauungsbibliothek einer jungen Dienstmagd" erworben.
