This UK-supplied, right-hand drive Quattro WR has remained on a family farm for 39 years and is on offer at No Reserve. This 2,144cc in-line, five-cylinder, 10-valve Audi Quattro WR was purchased brand new in 1984 by a local farmer from Testwood Motors of Southampton. It was finished in Zermatt Silver with a Brazil cloth interior and was fitted from new with a sunroof and a Blaupunkt Atlanta radio/cassette. In 1995 (the final Tax Disc expired on 30th November 1995), he passed it down to his son at 139,000 miles but he chose never to drive it, storing it in a corner of a barn until recently. The storage area didn't let in much daylight and the car appears to be in remarkably original condition under the dust, the interior in particular benefitting from being kept in favourable light conditions. It's supplied with its original wider alloys on original Pirelli P7Rs which are uncracked due to the dark storage, three keys and the history file containing numerous MOTs, invoices, drivers manuals etc.On offer at No Reserve, this remarkable barn-find Quattro appears in good shape and would be great fun to recommission and detail prior to returning to the road.Specification Make: AUDI Model: QUATTRO Year: 1984 Chassis Number: WAUZZZ85ZEA900967 Registration Number: A288 0H0 Transmission: Manual Engine Number: WR005163 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Make: RHDClick here for more details and images
**Please note the registration number of this car is XCA 955K as per the photographs, not XCA 995K as erroneously catalogued.** A beautifully restored B Roadster, thoughtfully upgraded and presenting well - offered at No Reserve. Introduced in 1962, the MG B Roadster enjoyed an 18-year production run. With nicely balanced handling and a good turn of speed, it merited the old MG marketing slogan 'Safety Fast'. Based around a monocoque chassis featuring independent coil-sprung front suspension and a leaf-sprung 'live' rear axle, its 1,798cc B series four-cylinder engine was allied to a 4-speed manual transmission. Capable of over 100mph, the provision of front disc brakes and rack-and-pinion steering greatly aided control.First registered on 4th April 1972, towards the end of Mk II production, XCA 995K displays 84,900 recorded and credible miles and has been enjoyed by just six former keepers since 1972. It was the subject of an extensive bodywork restoration and paint in the early 2000s, with many receipts from The Welsh MG Centre and Moss Europe that document the purchase of new front wings, a new fuel tank, bumper parts and grille pieces (to name just a few items) since 2001. Finished in gleaming British Racing Green and sitting on chrome wires, the refurbishment was obviously carried to an excellent standard as the B still presents beautifully. The car also benefits from a Kenlowe fan, electronic ignition and is fitted with overdrive. Inside, the cockpit has been freshened with an aftermarket Burr Walnut-effect dashboard trim and complementing it all is a set of cream leather MG F seats with cream door cards and matching carpets. It's supplied with the aforementioned invoices, old MOT Certificates and related MOT garage test invoices, its V5C and the normal manuals etc.People can be a bit dismissive about MG Bs, possibly because there are so many around, but they are handsome, affordable classics that go and handle well, and with the top down on a summer's day, represent all that we love about British sports cars, particularly when they look this good.SpecificationMake: MGModel: B ROADSTERYear: 1972Chassis Number: GHN52748279Registration Number: XCA 995KTransmission: ManualDrive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 84900 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Cream leatherClick here for more details and images
Brightly presented, versatile Series III County Safari with celebrity provenance and on offer at No Reserve. This attractive 1983 Series III 'County' spec diesel Station Wagon with the desirable Safari top was originally registered in December 1983. This was towards the end of Series III production and consequently it would have benefitted from the 1982 facelift which included all-new cloth seats, soundproofing kits, tinted glass and other 'soft' options designed to appeal to the leisure owner/user.A previous owner invested in a full refurbishment some years ago and the work included a cylinder head overhaul to enable the use of unleaded, all the engine ancillaries were either replaced or renewed including new carburettors, new battery and radiator, the transmission was rebuilt, the suspension, brakes and all steering parts were also renewed whilst the original body was stripped, a new rear wing and door skin fitted and completely repainted. It now presents wonderfully in Masai Red with a Limestone Safari roof and classic limestone steel wheels and the County Grey cloth on the seats appears excellent. The practical seat configuration of this iconic car consists of three individual seats in the front and four inwards facing fold away seats in the rear which are equally adept at taking friends to the pub for a pint or transporting livestock should you need. This flexibility appealed to our vendor, the well-known singer/songwriter and classic car enthusiast, Jay Kay, who has used it over recent years whilst at his holiday home for taking the kids to the beach and the kind of things that Land Rovers do best. With comparatively low-mileage of just 59,600, this is an economical, totally reliable and versatile Series Land Rover, enhanced by its Safari Roof and perhaps by a little celebrity provenance. An interesting Jaguar E-Type 3.8 FHC project from almost 50-year single ownership. This Series I, right-hand drive, 3.8 FHC was originally finished in Carmen Red with a black leather interior and is on offer from a Deceased Estate with single ownership that covers almost 50 years. Paperwork within the history file, dated 1980/81, lists a complete body and engine rebuild, a new bonnet assembly, new door skins, new floor pans, a suspension rebuild and much more, and the mileage, at that point, was 67,625. It was obviously used lightly after that, as the current indicated mileage is just over 74,000.By 2010, however, it was obviously in need of a refresh, and work commenced but was never completed. We understand that work included fresh paint, refinished chrome and works to the engine which is free and in running order. The Jaguar is believed to have stood for a period of ten years since these works were carried out, and it's evident that further recommissioning and future investment will be required, dependent on what level of finish is decided upon, offering real potential to its next custodian. It is suggested that your early inspection prior to purchase is encouraged and welcomed to fully understand what additional work will be required to return this Series I to top form. Whilst the paintwork finish is not glamorous, it may not take much to return the car to the road to be used whilst a full restoration is being considered, and it could represent a very affordable entry into E-Type ownership.Specification Make: JAGUAR Model: E TYPE 3.8 FHC Year: 1964 Chassis Number: 861261 Registration Number: 127 KNX Transmission: Manual Engine Number: TBA Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 74170 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: BlackClick here for more details and images
Very rare Christopher Neil Cabriolet conversion of Lotus' four-seat Elan, on offer at No Reserve. Whilst current market values often don't show it, the Elan Plus 2 was a pivotal car for Lotus when it launched in 1967. Its Ron Hickman lines and shared name may have pinned it with the petite breakthrough Elan of five years prior, but the Plus 2 was much more than a mere variant of the first mass market Lotus. It was the marque's first real concerted push towards the upmarket sports car sector it inhabits today. Where its junior sibling was aimed squarely at the enthusiastic hobbyist, the Plus 2 was conceived to tempt the affluent young family man out of his Jaguar and into a Lotus for the first time. Consequently, the Lotus was generously adorned with Walnut veneers, leather, gauges, switches and the airy interior required by arriving young executives and their families. In confirmation of this, the Plus 2 was the first Lotus not available in self-assembly form. However, despite its larger overall dimensions, the Plus 2 remained true to the Lotus 'simplify and add lightness' mantra, and the extended and widened Elan backbone chassis ensured that the Plus 2 retained the urgency and reactiveness that had proved such a hit with the original. This was something special - a light, sporty concept that was brand new to this sector of the market, and so much more than an enlarged Elan.We imagine that the management at Lotus must have discussed, at some point, the possibility of chopping the top off the Elan Plus 2, but it never happened, leaving the field wide open for enterprising Lotus dealer and marque expert, Christopher Neil, to do just that with his CN Cabriolets a few years later.First registered in 1969, XWW 50G started life as a Lotus Yellow Plus 2 Coupé before being converted to an open-top car using a Christopher Neil conversion kit. Around the year 2000, it was in need of a restoration and this was duly carried out. The work included a new chassis, sills, a full engine rebuild, new brakes, a wiring loom and finally it was refinished in a very attractive shade of Indigo Blue. Since being owned by our vendor, an ex-Formula 1 mechanic, it has been further improved by fitting new suspension from Tony Thompson Racing in 2021 with the invoice in the history file for £2,871, Sue Miller driveshafts, an aluminium fuel tank and aluminium radiator, and a new mohair roof and tonneau from Autotrim for £1,440. It's supplied with an original Christopher Neil Conversions sales brochure, multiple receipts, MOTs etc. and its V5C.Presented to a good standard, this is a rare car and you are unlikely to see another on the road. Remarkably, it's on offer at No Reserve, making this a tempting proposition.Specification Make: LOTUS Model: ELAN +2 CONVERTIBLE Year: 1969 Chassis Number: 500570 Registration Number: XWW 50G Transmission: Manual Engine Number: H17326B Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 28000 Miles Make: RHDClick here for more details and images
A multiple National Show-winner in the past, and fastidiously maintained by its long-term owner ever since, this astonishing little Cooper is being offered at No Reserve. Built on 18th of April 1968, finished in Snowberry White with a Black roof, STG 95F was supplied by the City Motor Company in Cardiff and was issued with a Glamorgan registration mark prior to joining its first owner. Amazingly, the car stayed with the same family until 2005. Whilst in this long-term ownership, it was issued with its final MOT Certificate on 13th September 1986 at which point it had a recorded mileage of 43,466. It was then used periodically over the following year before being taken off the road and put into dry storage where it was to remain until 2005.The owner prior to our vendor purchased it that same year and commenced, what was to become, a prolonged restoration involving many hundreds of hours of dedicated time and, according to invoices within the history file, over £6,500 worth of brand new parts. The process began with a photographically documented removal of all parts which was painstakingly carried out over a period of three years. In 2008, the rebuild began in earnest with a fastidious, possibly even obsessive, attention to detail and originality. The restoration was to original factory specification and a full description of this is available in an album that has been put together by the owner. This is available to view at the auction and is included in the sale. The bodywork was completely reworked to the very highest standards using new panels which were all the trial-fitted prior to painting. The underside of this Mini Cooper is every bit as good as on the top, being fully painted and detailed throughout. The engine was fully rebuilt to standard specification with new piston rings, oil pump and a complete new cooling system. The cylinder head was converted to run on unleaded fuel and the engine bay was detailed to a show standard. Many new parts have gone into this restoration including a new rear sub-frame, the front sub-frame has been stripped rebuilt and painted, there are new brake calipers, master cylinder, brake lines, steering rack and tie rods etc. The list is extensive. The work was completed in late-2010/early-2011 and its proud owner lost no opportunity to enter the car in shows and Concours d’Elegance events both locally and nationally. For the record, some of its success are listed below:National Mini Show 2011-Class Winner.National Mini Show 2011-Car of the Year.National NEC Classic Car Show selected for display on the Meguiars Concours standNational Mini Cooper Day 2011-Beaulieu ‘Master Class’ WinnerMiniFest - First Class WinnerThese successes in 2011 may seem a little irrelevant as they relate to 12 years ago, however the important bit is that this astonishing little Cooper has covered less than 150 miles since our vendor's purchase in 2012 at 50,289 miles. It hasn’t been left in long-term storage but, on the contrary, has been totally cherished by our South Wales-based vendor and has been taken everywhere by trailer. Consequently, it remains in the same condition that it displayed during its 'Show-Queen' season in 2011, and the odometer indicates just 50,437 miles. The history file now extends to three folders of photographic history, and we invite and encourage you to view this remarkable Mini to fully appreciate the quality on offer.Specification Make: MORRIS Model: MINI COOPER Year: 1968 Chassis Number: KA2S61154210A Registration Number: STG 95F Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 9FD-SAH34665 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 50437 Miles Make: RHDClick here for more details and images
Fully rebuilt with a new chassis and extensively upgraded, this Series IIA is really rather special. Dating from April 1966, George is a Series IIA that has been fully restored and upgraded in current ownership since 2014. The 'story of George' runs to several thousand words, far too much to even paraphrase here, but our consignor, Stacey will be happy to send interested parties a copy of this charming story by email.A small extract in our vendor’s words;'I needed something that would keep me more active than normal, so my wife gave me the green light to find a classic Land Rover, but she had one condition that it must have the headlights in the centre panel. For me, I added that I wanted a petrol engine and SWB and that was it, so other than these requirements I really didn’t have a clue what to look for. So the search began, mainly looking around Ebay, I did see a couple of vehicles around my budget and then I spotted George, he was taxed and MOT’d for six months which meant I could run him and get an idea of what needed doing.A few days later, I made the train journey down to Evesham to collect George with the intention of driving back to Stoke, and made sure I had sufficient tools to cover any basic repairs should any issues come up during the drive back. When I arrived, George was standing on the drive in all his glory, he’d already been fitted with parabolic springs and Koni shocks some time back by a previous owner, the door tops were pretty much shot but usable for now, they would need replacing along with the rear tail gate and cat flap which had been joined together to make a type of safari door – not nice for sure. The sale was agreed and the journey home commenced. George was running a Weber Carburettor which was being a little temperamental on the journey home, but after a few tweaks it calmed down and the rest of the trip was relatively pain free – well as best you can expect from a Land Rover. Once home I had time to make a full assessment of what I needed to replaced right away to use up the remaining six months of Tax and MOT, during this time I could plan my re-build, it was always my intention to replace the chassis and I think after the strip down I was justified in that decision.'The rest of the story is hugely detailed and fascinating. We recommend for anyone interested to come and view George in all his glory - the handsome, restored example of the rugged and iconic 4 x 4, presenting in excellent condition throughout, making the perfect usable off-road companion, a brilliant show car or a charming addition to any collection, and these are just some of the reasons why George is so special.Standard components – either restored or replaced:Chassis – replaced in February 2015 using a Richards Replica Chassis Suffix CEngine – original engine correct date, short block refurbished +0.40 pistons, standard crank (bearings replaced) and cam, timing chain, oil pump, water pump and petrol pump all replaced.Axle – both front and rear are originals and date correct 1966 – Refurbished using nylon coating. Wartime Willys Jeep with a fully reconditioned original engine and a remarkable movie career (Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, Pennyworth and more). Although forever associated with Willys-Overland, the original Jeep military vehicle was developed by American Bantam, formerly American Austin. Designed to meet the US Army's requirement for a rugged, go-anywhere, four-wheel drive vehicle capable of surviving on the barest minimum of unskilled maintenance, Bantam's prototype was up and running by 1940, meeting the Army's requirements apart from the engine, which was deemed insufficiently powerful. The Pentagon, though, doubted Bantam's ability to meet the military's post-Pearl Harbour demands, so the major contracts went to Willys and the Ford Motor Company, which would be responsible for the Jeep's trademark slotted radiator grille. Willys made various modifications to take advantage of a revised maximum weight requirement, which meant it was able to use its relatively heavy but adequately powerful 'Go Devil' engine. It was in this revised form that the Jeep would enter volume production. Willys-Overland's final production version was the Model MB, Ford's being designated the Model GPW. Produced by the million, the ubiquitous Jeep saw service in every theatre of WWII, and continued in military service with armies worldwide for several decades thereafter. Today, the Jeep remains highly sought after by discerning military vehicle enthusiasts.First registered in the UK in 1977, this splendid 1944 Willys is on offer from TLO Film Services, suppliers of action vehicles to the film and television industry since 1962. It was purchased by them from reputable Jeep specialists, Dallas Auto Parts near Newbury, in January 1996 and we understand has three former registered keepers. With a large number of unusual vehicles to look after, they have their own team of engineers/mechanics and have access to a number of marque specialists. ESU 623 was subject to a full rebuild of its original engine in late February 2023 by World War 2 Jeeps at a cost of £4,970 and will be fully serviced prior to the auction.According to TLO's records, this particular vehicle has appeared in numerous productions including Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, Pennyworth, and others. Jeeps of all designations are an integral part of the British Summer, whizzing around from county shows to military parades to classic car days at the local pub, and are always appreciated and regarded as rather 'cool', however this well-presented Willys with remarkable movie provenance is fairly well up there on the 'street credibility' scale.Sensibly guided given its provenance, come along to the NEC, jump in and see how it feels.Specification Make: WILLYS Model: JEEP Year: 1944 Chassis Number: 41088 Registration Number: ESU 623 Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 17184 Drive Side: Left-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 25975 Miles Make: LHDClick here for more details and images
An exceptional, low-mileage, low-ownership example of Suzuki's, now rare, SJ413 - offered at No Reserve. The Suzuki Jimny, a small, simple and robust 4x4 car, became the Japanese car maker’s first global success. In 1970, the first version was introduced as the LJ ('Light Jeep') 10. With its length of less than 3.2 metres, it belonged into the tax-privileged 'Kei car' (smallest vehicle) category. Its successor LJ 20 introduced the famous vertical grille bars and a stronger engine. In 1975 the SJ series ('Suzuki Jeep') was launched, which eventually replaced the LJ, even though both models were offered simultaneously. Power upgrades followed, additional markets were won over. In Germany, the LJ was presented in 1979 and the SJ 410 available as of 1982.As it was cheap to buy and run, it quickly gained a significant market share, with Suzuki becoming market leader for 4x4 cars throughout the 1980s. Particularly popular became the SJ 413 (four-wheel drive, 1.3-litre engine), later called 'Samurai' which featured a larger 1.3-litre four-cylinder engine, 5-speed manual transmission and power brakes (disc brakes on the front and drum brakes on the rear) all around. The body and interior were also redesigned, with the introduction of a roll bar, along with a new dashboard, seats, and grille. This smart example was originally supplied by Suzuki at Highfield in January 1991 - the original Sales Invoice remains with the car. The previous owner purchased the car in 2020 and used it regularly for local journeys, storing it under cover during Lockdown and in the winter. Now over 30 years old, the car is a remarkable survivor and remains in excellent condition, a testament to its three owners. The service book documents the first main dealer service in 1991 and then 11 hand-written entries from 2002 until 2015, detailing service and maintenance work. A quantity of further maintenance records and parts invoices show just how well the little Suzuki has been looked after. The odometer currently reads 32,551 miles which is corroborated by the extensive service and MOT history. It's supplied with the original dealer bookpack, numerous invoices, older MOT Certificates back to 1997, an original brochure and some useful spares including a windscreen.Specification Make: SUZUKI Model: SJ 413 VX Year: 1991 Chassis Number: VSE0SJV3D00088904 Registration Number: H638 FLU Transmission: manual Engine Number: G13A93238 Odometer Reading: 32500 Miles Interior Colour: Grey ClothClick here for more details and images
Known as 'SportLine Zero', this 350 SL has been converted to fully electric propulsion by marque specialists, SLSHOP. Fully rebuilt from the ground upwards with an investment of nearly £200,000. The story begins when SCC 107K arrived at SLSHOP ready for retirement, minus its engine and with a faulty gearbox, and seemed an ideal candidate to be rebuilt as an electrically-powered classic Mercedes, a project that was already under consideration by the innovative team at the SLSHOP. The car was then completely stripped and rebuilt with the utmost attention to detail, with every aspect of the change carefully planned to retain the handling characteristics of the standard version. Unlike a conventionally designed car, with the substantial weight of the engine and gearbox positioned in the middle at the front, the team were comparatively free to position the heavy components where they wanted to and, using corner-weight scales during construction, it was possible to position the batteries and heavy electrical components so the weight was reasonably divided between all four quarters of the SL. Consequently, a dynamic balance was achieved resulting in the safe predictable handling for which the R107 was renowned. The electrics and running gear are discretely hidden, and there are no clues to the car's transformation other than the OAT gauge which now displays battery charge capacity, the non-standard gear selector and a charging plug beneath the fuel flap. Mounted front and rear are 53kWh of Tesla batteries, powering a 150bhp 213lb/ft electric motor, more than enough for an SL, and offering a range of 150 miles. Acceleration is dialled down at low speeds to closely match that of the petrol-engined version, the 0-60 time is on a par with that of the original, and performance can be adjusted to suit the owner. Make no mistake, this is a quick and capable car, boasting superior SportLine suspension and brakes. Writing in The Daily Telegraph in April 2020, Quentin Wilson was one of the first motoring journalists to drive the SportLine Zero: 'This electric SL can really shift... the sheer ingenuity of engineering this old Merc to drive so well on battery power eclipsed my nostalgia for its traditional powerplant... I was repeatedly struck at how captivating it felt. What's also quickly apparent is how natural it all feels, like the SL should have always been powered like this.'The Sportline has been owned by our vendor, a well-known private Collector, for a while and whilst in his care, has been professionally valeted every month, accruing less than 500 miles since his purchase. A modern take on a classic look, this electric SL is both a showstopper and Concours d'Elegance winner, a fascinating combination of modern technology and old-fashioned craftsmanship. It's supplied with its V5C and is UK-registered as an Electric Vehicle. For city-centre driving, it can be charged from an EV point or three-pin plug from a domestic supply and, encouragingly, it’s worth noting that the SLSHOP and Electric Classic Cars are able to offer ongoing maintenance support for the new owner of this fabulous creation. A lovely example of the British Cobra. Designed in part by renowned American car designer and racer, Carroll Shelby, in an attempt to raise the declining fortunes of the Rootes Group, the Tiger was penned around the popular Sunbeam Alpine bodyshell with V8 motivation to compete successfully in World markets where larger capacity engines and sports car styling were at the forefront of late-1960s motoring.Codenamed 'Thunderbolt', the whole project took place without the knowledge of Lord Rootes, and when he found out, he got 'very grumpy' by all accounts, although he had the good sense to get a prototype shipped to Coventry and was deeply impressed with the car when it arrived. Shelby had envisaged assembling them in America as he had done with AC Cobras, however Rootes opted to pay him a royalty on each unit and use West Bromwich-based Jensen Motors to build the cars, as they had spare capacity having just ceased their Volvo P1800 assembly contract. A total of some 7,085 Sunbeam Tigers were eventually produced, including 536 of the now very rare 4.7-litre Mk2 versions which arrived in 1967. The final cars rolled off the lines in 1968, production being shelved when Chrysler took over the Rootes Group, their new bosses unable to sanction a car powered by their arch-rivals, Ford. This Tiger was produced new in 1966 then marked for export to California where it was first registered in 1967. Repatriated to the UK in 1989, it was purchased by marque specialists, Alpine West Midlands, and the proprietors, Mr & Mrs Farmer, decided in view of its remarkably sound 'California Car' condition, to keep it as their own personal vehicle. As their business revolved around Alpines and Tigers, it was important that their personal car was a bit of a 'showroom window' so, during their ownership, it was converted to right-hand drive, treated to some cosmetic paintwork whilst retaining all of its original panels, the dashboard was re-veneered in Walnut, and the car was generally detailed to reflect their standards.Ownership then passed to a private couple based in Germany who owned the car for the next 22 years until it joined our vendor's significant private Collection of British Motor Cars nearly five years ago. This is a lovely, sound example of the Tiger, which has benefitted from living in California, six years with marque enthusiasts and the next 25 years under caring private ownership. Tigers continue to gain momentum in the market, and this is a good one that will reward a closer inspection.Specification Make: SUNBEAM Model: TIGER MK1A Year: 1967 Chassis Number: B38200249LRXFE Registration Number: KOM 310E Transmission: Manual Engine Number: HEHB5A18F Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 62 Miles Make: RHDClick here for more details and images
An original ex-Metropolitan Police Daimler Dart, a rare survivor and restored to a Concours standard. An unusual departure for a firm more noted for its stately limousines, the SP250 sports car was Daimler's final fling before its acquisition by Jaguar. Aimed at the North American market and launched in 1959, the SP250 (originally entitled Dart) employed a separate ladder-type chassis on which sat controversially-styled fibreglass coachwork manufactured by Daimler themselves. Four-wheel disc brakes were an unusual feature at the time but unquestionably the car's biggest virtue was its magnificent 2.5-litre V8 engine. An outstandingly flexible unit, the smaller of Daimler's two Edward Turner designed V8s produced 140bhp, an output good enough to propel the SP250 to a top speed of 125mph. In keeping with the demands of its intended market, automatic transmission was available as an option. In the late 1950s, the Metropolitan Police had a major problem with what were called, 'Café Racers'. Groups of youths on motorbikes would gather together at a local café, put a record on the jukebox and then race their bikes along a set course, getting back to the café before the record had stopped playing. Accidents occurred and, in an attempt to put a stop to the practice, the Met’s proposal was to have a fast car that could actually catch the bikers. The existing fleet of Wolseley saloons was not up to the task, so they looked instead at sports cars, concluding that the Daimler SP250 Dart was the answer! This had a 2.5-litre lightweight V8 engine and was capable of 125mph and 0-60 in ten seconds which, for 1959, was remarkable. The Met bought 26 Darts between 1961 and 1964 and soon got them into service to be used as high-speed pursuit cars based at separate Traffic Garages situated over the London area. The results were impressive, with many speeding bikers being caught, and the number of fatal road accidents dropped. Unlike today, the idea then was that you see a Police car and thereby slow down - no stealth tactics for these boys.Borg-Warner Model 8 3-speed automatic cars destined for Police use were modified by Daimler with the fitting of a handle in the centre of the dashboard which, when pulled, locks the gearbox into second gear allowing a speed range from 0-85mph in a single gear. The gearbox normally runs in two gears only, with a ‘low’ ratio for manual selection if required and the slightly higher gearing resulted in an increased top speed compared to manual gearbox cars. The Metropolitan Police found this to be better for town work and high-speed chases, and it was also found to be more economical, avoiding the clutch wear that a manual car would develop with usage between 18 and 24 hours a day.Traffic police in Bristol, Cambridge, Liverpool, Manchester, Southend and Surrey also used the SP250 for speed enforcement, as did police forces in Australia and New Zealand. After the opening of the first section of the M1 in 1959, the Bedfordshire police used the SP250 for motorway patrol prior to the arrival of the 70mph limit in 1965.The sparkling example on offer here, 550 CLU, was registered with the Metropolitan Police on 1st June 1961 as Fleet Number 240T. It bears Engine No. 96223, Chassis No.102820 and was fitted with the optional Borg-Warner DG. Automatic gearbox, an AT Head Calibrated Speedometer and Pye Radio equipment. The Met disposed of 550 CLU on 30th August 1967, having been driven 97,325 miles in less than five years, and it was sold on to a Mr Killamsy of 2 Winter Street, London SW11 (copy record in file). It was subsequently purchased by Claude Kearley, President of the Daimler SP250 Owners Club (2007-2009) who commenced a photo-documented restoration including engine, gearbox and drive train to Concours standards. It became our vendor's property in 2016 and has been much enjoyed ever since, taking part in all sorts of events and is a multi-award winner including second place in the 2017 East Coast Run and first Place, Sledmere 2017. It’s been an NEC exhibit three years running and was to be an entrant in Zoute Concours d’Elegance prior to the COVID lockdown. When 'Oxford Diecast' chose to model a Police SP250 for their 1/43 scale range, 550 CLU was the chosen car.Supplied with the car are its V5C and previous ownership docs, a copy of the Met Historic Fleet Disposal Records, period copy photographs of actual use when in service, press cuttings, photos of surviving drivers (at 2013), MOTs, Owners’ Manual, accessories manual and more.Offered from a significant private Collection of British motor cars, this Daimler is a must for any collector/investor and needs to be viewed to fully appreciate the finish and detail that has gone into its fastidious restoration.Obviously this immaculate Dart can be enjoyed in much the same way that we all enjoy our classic cars but, in addition, it’s regularly in demand for meets and shows and would be welcome at events run by the Daimler and Lanchester Owners Club, the Daimler Dart Owners Club, the Police Vehicle Club and naturally local County Shows and Village Fetes. If that’s what you have in mind, this rare 1960s classic could keep you busy for the rest of your days.Specification Make: DAIMLER Model: SP250 Year: 1961 Chassis Number: 102820 Registration Number: 550 CLU Transmission: Auto Engine Number: 96223 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveClick here for more details and images
Multiple International Concours-winner and one of the finest examples available today. When Michelotti's sharp-suited new TR4 was unveiled at the London Motor Show in 1961, the car looked thoroughly modern, especially when compared with the venerable TR3A that it replaced. However, the reality was that, under the skin, the car was still very much a TR3A as little more than the sleek bodywork was actually new. Despite this, the TR4 and the TR4A that succeeded it were amongst the fastest affordable sports cars on offer throughout the 1960s. Cheap to buy and run, the car's road manners, however, left some room for improvement over the TR3A, despite the TR4 having gained rack and pinion steering, wider front and rear tracks to make it more surefooted, and an all-synchro gearbox. However, as stylish transport, they were pretty much unbeatable. All it cried out for, to compete with the new wave of GT saloons, was more power. Lots more. The standard 2-litre GT6 engine was tried and, although smooth, was actually no quicker than the old tractor-derived four pot. In the end, the solution was remarkably simple. The straight-six was enlarged by 500cc to a lusty 2.5-litres, the cylinder-head redesigned and a more sporty camshaft fitted, all of which resulted in a much more 'manly' power unit, albeit a little 'lumpy' at low revs. Fuel-injection proved the answer to that particular problem and, in October 1967, the TR5 was launched. Outwardly, the car was barely discernible from the TR4A, but the new engine, complete with Lucas fuel-injection turned the '5' into a genuine performance car, with a handy 150bhp on tap. Realistically, the car was effectively a stop-gap and only had to last around two years until Karmann had finished its work on the replacement, the TR6, however, with the benefit of hindsight, the TR5 is arguably the best of the lot, enjoying the great unsullied looks of the TR4 but with the raunchiness of the TR6. Only 2,947 TR5s were ever built, with 1,161 of those being finished for the UK-market and, today, only around 500 are believed to remain on UK roads.Presented in striking Jasmine Yellow and optioned with overdrive, this rare 1968 UK-market car has benefitted from a money-no-object restoration to a breathtakingly high standard. For over 20 years prior to work commencing, Simon Eaton and his engineer father, already prolific Triumph collectors, set out on a treasure hunt to source all available new/old stock and boxed 'Stanpart' components. Their brief was simple - to build the very best example possible. Well-known Triumph restorer, Michael Papworth, was to provide the Eatons with the ideal basis for their project, reluctantly parting with his stalled TR5 restoration project - a desirable home-soil example with just one former custodian from new. Over subsequent years, the car was stripped and progress was made. A brand new chassis by CTM was commissioned as the starting platform, but utilized N/OS turrets and steering column brackets and absolutely nothing reconditioned was fitted. The inner bodyshell and Stanpart panelwork were prepared and finished by respected restorer, Mark Johnson of Jules Bodycraft. Simon's father was tasked with the meticulous job of rebuilding the car's fuel-injected 'six' to its original factory specification, including balancing the crankshaft. The stated 150bhp is transmitted through a fully rebuilt gearbox with overdrive featuring all Stanpart internals and a new/old stock Laycock three-piece clutch. Upholsterer to HRH Queen Elizabeth II, Gary Wright of Milton Keynes was chosen as the ideal candidate to retrim the car's interior (all to original specification) and provide weather protection in the form of a perfectly fitting mohair hood. Finished off by a set of polished chrome wire wheels, this spectacular TR5 is one of the best we have ever seen.Upon completion, the car received much critical acclaim and has won a plethora of high-profile Concours d'Elegance events contested by Triumph owners from all over Europe including:2000 Meguiars / TR Register International - Best Standard TR5 - 2502004 Meguiars / TR Register International - Masters Class Winner2007 Meguiars / TR Register International - Best Paintwork2010 Meguiars / TR Register International - Best Standard TR4-5The TR was purchased by our vendor a few years ago, and he has continued to cherish and maintain it, including fitting the lovely elm dashboard, a new and correct fuel tank, a reconditioned diff, Waxoyled the underside and the bodywork has been polished and ceramic coated. It's also had an electronic fuel injection and ignition system fitted, however the original mechanical unit is carefully boxed and comes with the car as does the original steering wheel and boss.As you might expect from such fastidious owners, the car is supplied with a substantial quantity of paperwork, photographs which completely document the mammoth restoration and many of the aforementioned awards. Truly a 'Best of Breed' example that couldn't be replicated for double today's guide figure, we invite and encourage your viewing of this rare and desirable TR to confirm the sheer quality on offer.Specification Make: TRIUMPH Model: TR5 Year: 1969 Chassis Number: CP26690 Registration Number: HBH 10G Transmission: Manual Engine Number: CP910 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 2241 Miles Make: RHDClick here for more details and images
An outstandingly wholesome, seldom-seen Series 1.5 Roadster in excellent condition, offered from 36 years of caring ownership. The Series I E-Type was introduced initially for export-only in March 1961 using the triple SU carburetted, 3.8-litre, six-cylinder XK engine from the XK150S. The car continued to be developed over time, with the first major changes arriving in 1964, including an increased capacity to 4.2-litres. There was never a fixed specification or official designation for this interim model, although with the arrival of the officially-named 'Series 2', the early cars became Series Is and the interim cars, logically, Series 1.5. These cars can be recognised by their open headlights, small 'mouth' air intake, the exhaust tips under the number plate at the rear and the tail lights and indicators above the bumpers. It is undoubtedly one of the rarest variations of the E-Type, with enthusiasts claiming that it is the best-driving and most nimble derivative. The 4.2-litre engine and all-synchromesh gearbox offers increased power and usability whilst retaining the fabulous looks of the earlier cars. Naturally there are enthusiasts for every iteration of E-Type from the early, flat-floor, Moss-gearbox skinny-seat cars to the voluptuous and voluminous V12 Series 3, however those folk that really know suggest that a 1.5, well-maintained and properly set up, would probably represent the ultimate.NOP 155F is a left-hand drive Ohio-delivered Series 1.5 imported into the UK in the 1980s and first registered in 1990 following a tremendous, enthusiast-performed restoration, finished in period-perfect Carmen Red with a black leather interior. Manufactured in the second year of Series 1.5 production in 1968, the car's early/USA history is relatively unknown, but we can ascertain from the original Ohio registration plates that it resided there for a while, before returning to the UK. Purchased by our vendor in 1987/8 in a very poor state of repair, it was a passion project from the start as he set about restoring the car with his sons from the ground up to what you see today. After more than two years of hard work with long days and nights, the Jag was completed, MOT’d and first registered in 1990 with a wonderful tale from our vendor. Thankfully the restoration was very well-photographed throughout and illustrates the level of restoration the car required. It is undeniable that our vendor is a perfectionist and that truly shows through with the quality of the result. The Jaguar was purchased with c.37,000 miles displayed on the odometer and, being just 19-years old at the time, we believe this to be genuine. Since being in the UK, it has an MOT Certificate from every year, with yearly mileage increments remaining incredibly low, so we believe the mileage to be a genuine 41,069 miles from new but, without any USA documentation, it's impossible to be certain. What we are sure about is that the car has covered less than 5,000 miles in our vendors long-term 36-year ownership, as can be verified by the aforementioned MOT history.Whilst in our vendor's care, the car has always remained garaged and in simply impeccable running and driving condition. Over the years, it's been taken to various shows and displays including the 1991 Display of 1000 E-Types at Donington with lots of photographs in the file. Having never seen the rain since its completion, NOP 155F continues to present well with good panel gaps, a deep shine and an excellent hood. The word 'wholesome' really gets thrown about a lot these days, but this car truly ticks all the boxes. Restored with the help of his sons and kept for 36 years at the same property, we imagine parting with his beloved E-Type will be somewhat emotional for the whole family, however we have promised them that we can find a new owner who will take proper care of this venerable Jaguar.Specification Make: JAGUAR Model: E-TYPE SERIES 1.5 4.2-LITRE ROADSTER Year: 1968 Chassis Number: 1E17671 Registration Number: NOP 155F Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 7E17181-9 Drive Side: Left-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 41070 Miles Make: LHD Interior Colour: Black LeatherClick here for more details and images
Beautifully restored in the past and on offer from diligent, long-term ownership. Jaguar Cars launched the XK140 at the London Motor Show in October 1954 with a raft of improvements over its predecessor, the landmark XK120. The styling was enhanced by a revised grille and larger bumpers along with new rear lights, which now incorporated the indicators. The handling was improved by rack and pinion steering and telescopic dampers and the interior space was enlarged to allow the addition of occasional rear seats. The power unit remained Jaguar's well-proven 3.4-litre twin-cam six, which now produced 190bhp in standard trim, thanks to higher-lift camshafts and revised porting. To ensure reliability, steel bearing caps replaced the previous cast-iron type. A close-ratio gearbox enabled better use to be made of the increased performance whilst a Laycock de Normanville overdrive became an option for the first time. Special Equipment (SE) XK140s came with wire wheels and Lucas fog lamps and could be ordered with an engine developing 210bhp courtesy of a C-Type cylinder head.According to its Heritage Certificate, this right-hand drive XK140 DHC was completed on 16th June 1955 finished in Dove Grey with tan leather and a Fawn hood. It was despatched on 24th June 1955 to Belle Vale Service Station (now Henlys, Manchester) prior to being delivered to its first owner, a Leo McParland of Wallasey who registered it as DHF 28 on 27th June 1955.From the helpful ownership history provided with the car, we can see that in 1978 it was purchased by a Mr Adams who commenced what was to be an extended restoration. One further owner followed before DHF became the property on 3rd March 1986 of Edward Billins who picked up the reins of the restoration and handed the car over to the Marina Garage in Southampton. Some 14 years later, the restoration was still not complete and, for whatever reason, ownership of the Jaguar passed to the Marina Garage. The final chapter of this long-running saga commenced in 2010 when the XK was purchased by the Beaulieu Garage, also in Southampton, and according to the file it was running but required the trim and woodwork finishing. This was obviously done as there is an invoice in the file from 2010 for £9,437 detailing a full retrim, new hood and associated fittings. There are a number of further invoices in the file including one for £5,000 for labour in 2011, and we assume this relates to the Jaguar being refinished in a deep coat of Indigo Blue.DHF 28 was purchased by our vendor in June 2011 and has been enjoyed since then, being maintained and upgraded in-house by his experienced engineers. A substantial invoice from October 2014 details a full engine rebuild with a new clutch, the installation of a 5-speed T5 gearbox, power steering kit and upgraded cooling fan. The original parts have all been retained in the interests of returning the car to standard. Next to the XK150S Roadster, the right-hand drive XK140 drophead is the second most rare of the XK range, and this stunning dark blue example with chrome wire wheels and a crisp grey and blue interior is one of the best we have seen. We invite and encourage you to view this lovely Jaguar at the Classic to appreciate the quality on offer.Specification Make: JAGUAR Model: XK140 Year: 1955 Chassis Number: 807170 Registration Number: DHF 28 Transmission: Manual Engine Number: G-4036-8 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 80199 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: Kight Grey LeatherClick here for more details and images
Running and driving well, this venerable Healey has always been garaged and loved as one of the family. Introduced for 1956, the 100/6 represented the most radical step forward in the Big Healey's development. Despite its initial success, sales of the original Austin-Healey 100 had begun to decline by the mid-1950s and so the model was revamped as the '100/6', BMC's 2.6-litre C-series six replacing the original four-cylinder Austin Atlantic engine. At the same time the wheelbase was lengthened from 7' 6" to 7' 8", which enabled the inclusion of two occasional seats in the rear of the BN4 variant. In 100-6 tune the pushrod six produced 102bhp – 12hp more than its predecessor. Although stylistically very similar to the preceding 100, the 100/6 was nevertheless easily distinguishable by its 'crinkle' radiator grille and bonnet-top air intake. In 1957 an improved six-port engine became available, and this 117bhp unit was fitted to all the newly introduced BN6 two-seater roadsters. Top speed improved to 111mph and 1.7 seconds was cut from the 0-60mph time. The accompanying Heritage certificate confirms that this 100/6 four-seater is an early home-market BN4. It was built on 19th February 1957 delivered in Ivory White with red trim and a black hood and had been optioned from new with a heater, laminated windscreen, disc wheels and overdrive deleted. The first owner, a retired doctor, kept the Healey until his untimely death in early 1960. Offered for sale at Agnew & Graham Ltd, Oxford Street, Belfast, our vendor's father was obviously rather taken with this shiny Healey and purchased it on 2nd July 1960 for £600 and, pleasingly, the Bill of Sale is in the car's history file.Whilst in the family ownership for the last 63 years, the car has been well-maintained and has covered just 64,000 miles from new. Inherited by our vendor and his sister in 1995, the Healey was entrusted to MG Restorations, Belfast who in 1996 carried out a full repaint, but pleasingly it still has its original interior and benefitted from a new hood at the time. Having been jointly owned by the late owner's children for nearly 30 years, only used on high days and holidays, they have decided that the time has come to part with 'Dad's Healey'. An honest, genuine, much-loved 100/6 that has been with the family for six decades.Specification Make: AUSTIN HEALEY Model: 100/6 Year: 1957 Chassis Number: BN4S34252 Registration Number: RZ7314 Transmission: Manual Engine Number: ICH34252 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 64000 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: RedClick here for more details and images
Only 2,500 miles since a substantial restoration, this elegant 120 Coupé remains in fabulous condition. A car-starved Britain, still trundling around in perpendicular pre-war hangover vehicles, glimpsed the future in October 1948 with the launch of the Jaguar XK120 at the Earls Court Motor Show. Production commenced in 1949 in Coventry, and the XK's swoopy shape and stylish occupants would become a common sight on British roads over the next 15 years. It heralded the arrival of Jaguar's famous 3.4-litre twin overhead camshaft XK engine, (the basis of all their engines for the next 25 years) with an alloy cylinder head and twin side-draught SU carburettors producing nearly 160bhp. The 120 referred to the car's top speed which, at the time, made it the fastest production car in the world. Jaguar seems to have always had a flair for marketing and to illustrate that the car's top speed was not a figment of a publicist's imagination as in May 1949, on the Jabbeke to Aeltre autoroute, an XK120 with its hood and side screens in place recorded a speed of 126mph, and no less than 132mph with the hood and windscreen detached and an undertray fitted. The car was in almost instant demand and went on to spawn the famous XK lineage of fast and elegant sports cars. This splendid XK120 was delivered new to Hoffman, New York on 4th September 1951. It turned heads in the US for many years before returning to the UK in July 2004 looking very tired and in need of restoration. Renowned Jaguar restorers, Beacon Garage in Doncaster, inherited that particular task and a comprehensive last nut and bolt rebuild was completed in 2012. The car was converted to right-hand drive, fitted with a C-Type cylinder head, upgraded leather bucket seats and chrome wire wheels - there are receipts on file totalling £80,000 from this period and viewing of the extensive file is highly recommend. Inspected by the Jaguar Drivers Club at the time who confirmed it was faultless, other than some light pitting of the chrome on one rear light. They valued it at £125,000 at that time.XDN 36 was purchased by our vendor, a serious motoring connoisseur, in December 2018 and, in his care, the XK has been well-maintained and lightly but regularly used. It's been enjoyed on various Bowcliffe Drivers Club events and placed second in one of their Concours d'Elegance events. It has covered less than 2,500 miles since the restoration with the only major expense being a set of new Pirelli Cinturatos. On our recent inspection, the car remains near faultless, it really does present well, with a small nick on the drivers bucket seat bolster the only obvious fault.Ready to be enjoyed, be that out on the open road or gracing the club circuit, with all that has to offer, this impressive XK120 warrants your early inspection to fully appreciate this rare and desirable drivers Jaguar.Specification Make: JAGUAR Model: XK120 COUPÉ Year: 1951 Chassis Number: 679082 Registration Number: XDN 36 Transmission: Manual 4 speed Engine Number: G 2681-8 Odometer Reading: 2134 Miles Make: Interior Colour: Black LeatherClick here for more details and images
Superbly restored, a very well-presented example of one of Chapman’s earliest designs. The Elite Type 14 was Colin Chapman’s first production sports car that he designed for Lotus Cars, debuting in 1957. Lotus' design philosophy ran contrary to the prevailing norm, making their cars lighter, more aerodynamic and therefore more nimble, rather than increasing horsepower and weight enabling Lotus cars to outmanoeuvre much more powerful vehicles on track. It was very light, weighing just 630kg utilising a monocoque construction which meant there was no separate chassis, the body was load-bearing, and whilst this was becoming accepted practice, the Elite was the first time it had been constructed in glass-fibre. There were only two strips of steel in the car — a strip for the door hinges to attach to and a very small steel frame to which the engine and suspension were attached. When combined with independent sporty suspension, a ZF gearbox, disc brakes, a Coventry Climax all-aluminium engine and a very low drag coefficient of just 0.29, it made for a great drivers car, so much so that by production end in 1963 over 1,000 had been produced. The Elite was very expensive to produce - especially the GRP monocoque which was extremely labour-intensive (the first 280 were built by Maximar then production switched to Bristol Aircraft who built a further 760+ cars). It is estimated that Colin Chapman lost c.£100 on each Elite, so there was a backwards switch to a separate steel backbone chassis for the successor Elan, making it much cheaper to build.Offered here is very special Elite SE, presented in the wonderful period-correct Primrose Yellow with a silver metallic roof, matching Jim Clark’s road car. It's the higher performance, 85bhp factory variant (SE) which initially came fitted with twin SU carburettors, a fabricated exhaust system, the ZF Gearbox and Lucas PL700 headlamps.Purchased new in 1962 by Viscount Gough, it was subject to a complete 'last nut and bolt' restoration by the previous owner, who was meticulous in his attention to detail. In 2005, the bodywork was stripped back to the gel coat, all traces of repairs, stress cracks, and damage were removed and repaired using glass fibre only. The entire car was then re-spayed by Proline Paint, GRP specialists, costing in excess of £8,000, and all the lights were replaced with new-old-stock Lucas items. The interior is finished in black with grey carpet, the seats having been re-trimmed by a local ex-Aston Martin trimmer in black leather and the correct Irvin black seat belts were retained as was the original instrumentation, wood-rim steering wheel and its original Snail Brand tool kit and jack.Mechanically, the engine has been fully re-built up to FWB specification with a capacity of 1,460cc, using new components supplied by the premier Coventry Climax Engines specialist. These include a new-old-stock Coventry Climax crankshaft; Carrillo con-rods; new pistons; alloy five-bearing cam carrier; high-lift camshaft; new water and oil pumps; high-torque starter motor; re-cored radiator; thermostatically controlled Kenlowe electric cooling fan; new cast inlet manifold; and refurbished Weber DCOE 18 carburettors. In addition, the cylinder head has been fully ported, gas-flowed and rebuilt with larger inlet and exhaust valves. Having been fully balanced, it's not subject to the usual vibrations and shudders of an Elite. The engine will now safely rev to 7,000rpm plus, and should develop 120-125bhp.Standard fitment was a 4-speed MG gearbox with the highly sought after ZF all-synchro box offered, as an option on S2 models, but was part of the SE package. One of the drawbacks of the MG transmission was that it was low geared (standard rear axle ratio of 4.22:1 plus a direct fourth gear) meaning that the engine ran at quite high revs when cruising. This led to the development of a 5-speed Type-9 conversion – greatly improving driveability with its 'overdrive' fifth gear. This is all achieved without any modifications to the monocoque - so is completely reversible and vastly improves the driving experience. '905 FWB' is fitted with a Type 9 5-speed gearbox complete with a new clutch cover and drive plate. New bearings and universal joints were fitted throughout, and the 4.22:1 differential fully rebuilt, while the new 60-spoke wire wheels were fitted with period-correct Pirelli Cinturato tyres. In 2014, the suspension was replaced in its entirety by Tolman Motorsport. The original rear wishbones utilised a 'rubber ball' type location at the inboard end which can wear prematurely leading to instability caused by unwanted changes in toe angle. This Elite had the rear wishbones converted to rose joints in place of the 'ball & socket' arrangement, along with the Tolman Motorsport adjustable suspension set-up.Despite being MOT exempt, our vendor put the car through a voluntary MOT which it passed with no advisories, valid until 8th October 2024.Built in very small numbers (circa 1,040), and presenting in fabulous condition, this very well-sorted Elite is a delightful example. Having seen a full restoration with intelligent upgrades, this is certainly a car that Chapman would be proud to bear his name.Specification Make: LOTUS Model: ELITE SE Year: 1962 Chassis Number: EB2181718 Registration Number: 905 FWB Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 11977 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 64742 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: BlackClick here for more details and images
The desirable RS2000 Custom, fully restored by a renowned RS specialist and superbly presented in Signal Amber. It was back in 1970 that Ford introduced their Rally Sport models - the RS range. Originally designed as a way of building limited numbers of homologation specials for serious competition use, it soon grew into a major marketing opportunity, and one that Ford grabbed with both hands. By 1976, when the RS2000 Mk2 was launched, the term 'RS' had grown to mean something a bit special. In late 1978, the Custom Pack became an option and included the following; 'Fishnet' Recaro seats, full door-cards, clock and pod centre console, 6J x 13" alloys, boot carpet, remote driver’s door mirror and the back panel around the rear lights was painted black. Most recently it's had a new head gasket, water pump, thermostat and a full service. A new clutch was fitted in August and the rear axle overhauled. This striking RS2000 is ready to be enjoyed by its new owner.Specification Make: FORD Model: ESCORT Year: 1979 Chassis Number: GCATWD00972 Registration Number: GWC 90T Transmission: Manual Engine Number: WD00972 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 82607 Miles Make: RHDClick here for more details and images
One of only 500 UK-supplied right-hand drive examples, this Taiga Green CSL boasts low-ownership and an impressive history file. The 3.0 CSL is a lightweight, performance-oriented version of the standard 3.0 CS/3.0 CSi coupé. Utilising the E9 platform, the 3.0 CSL was unveiled at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show and was introduced in May 1972 as an homologation model for the German Touring Car Championship developed by a separate division within BMW AG, a division that would later become BMW Motorsport GmbH.The CSL achieved some great results, with wins at Le Mans in the touring car class in 1973 and 1974, the IMSA GT Championship in 1975, and winning the European Touring Car Championships every year from 1973 to 1979 (apart from a minor blip in 1974).The 'L' in the designation meant leicht (light), unlike in other BMW designations, where it meant lang (long).A total of 1,096 CSLs were built, with just 500 of these being imported into the UK. The great majority of UK cars had the 'City Package' option fitted, designed to make the 3.0 CSL more usable as a daily driver. These versions retained the standard interior trim, negating the total weight saving somewhat, but the other benefits were retained, including aero kit, thinner gauge steel and aluminium parts. Early CSLs, produced in late 1971 and early 1972, utilised the standard 2,985cc M30 inline-six engine with twin carburettors and were only offered in left-hand drive. They were replaced by a fuel-injected model displacing 3,003cc available in right-hand drive during late 1972 and early 1973. Fuel-injected CSLs with the 3-litre motor have VINs that run from 2275001 through 2275429 (left-hand drive version) and 2285-001 through 2285-500 (right-hand drive UK cars). The fabulous CSL on offer here, finished in Taiga Green with a black interior, is #2285-469, indicating that it was built right at the end of the UK-allocated cars. Much of the early servicing was carried out by BMW dealer, Fairfield Garage of Leigh on Sea, at the instruction of of Mr. Hudson of the Facet Group. Multiple invoices show he used the CSL up to a mileage of 47,000. It then resided in Hertfordshire for nearly 21 years with its new lady owner, who obviously used it lightly as she covered less than 12,000 miles during that period. There is a record of some renovation work taking place in the mid-1980s prior to it being sold in 2003 at a mileage of 61,900, corroborated by past MOTs. In 2005, it was purchased by our vendor who has used and maintained it, with a full account of his expenditure on repairs and maintenance fastidiously kept in the comprehensive history file. The majority of the servicing from 2006 was conducted by our vendor's hometown garage, J.J. Griffiths of Lllandrindod Wells, with any bodywork attention by King of Cool Classic Cars and the front seats were retrimmed by West Country Trimmers in 2017. Most recent mechanical work was carried out by Munich Legends in 2021 and there is an invoice for an oil change in September 2023.This lovely, stylish, low-owner BMW 3.0 CSL coupé enjoys an impressive history file and service record and represents a fine example of the car that defined Touring Cars in the 1970s and, 50 years later, still has a presence that few cars can match.Specification Make: BMW Model: 3.0 CSL Year: 1973 Chassis Number: 2285469 Registration Number: BVX 38L Transmission: Manual Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 96811 Miles Make: RHDClick here for more details and images
Already an established rally car, this impressive 240Z was extensively refreshed in 2020 and has since proven competitive and reliable in a number of European rallies during the last two years. The Datsun 240Z, (latterly the 260Z and 280Z) was the first generation of 'Z' two-seat coupés, produced by Nissan in Japan from 1969 to 1978. Its dramatic looks owed a considerable amount to a 1960s styling concept drawn by Count Albrecht Goertz for Datsun, presumably at a time when they were considering ways to break into the European sports car market. The 240Z was powered by a lusty 2.4-litre, straight-six overhead cam engine developing around 150bhp, resulting in a 0-60 time of eight seconds and a top speed of 125mph. A 5-speed manual gearbox was standard, and the car featured independent suspension all round, with MacPherson struts at the front and Chapman links at the rear. Rack and pinion power steering and front disc brakes meant that the 240Z was a thoroughly modern package. In the 1970s, these cars were hot property everywhere, and given that the car's drivetrain was heavily based on the 510 saloons used widely in motorsport, it was only a matter of time before the 240Z was campaigned on circuits and in forests on both sides of the Atlantic. Incredibly, some 50 years later, they can still be found in historic racing and are particularly popular in rallying circles, remaining competitive in club and historic events.Offered here is a very well-sorted Datsun 240Z rally car that has proved to be very reliable for our vendor on numerous rally events organised by Rally the Globe. The events included the Carrera Italia, Carrera Espania, Carrera Rivera, Highland Thistle and the West Country Cloverleaf where it performed effortlessly and with total reliability. Purchased by him in 2019, it was already an established rally car and had been fitted with a 2.8-litre engine, 5-speed gearbox, Quaife differential, a full roll-cage, and Minilite alloys, however our vendor commenced a recommission with reliability a very important factor.Various invoices in the history file show the purchase of parts from the 'Z Farm' delivered to Classic Rally Services of Suffolk to start the preparation process. At the beginning of 2020, approximately £6,000 was spent which included a new differential, rear-axle rebuild, Brantz timers and clocks, new seats, extinguisher and belts. The front cross-member was strengthened together with the front wishbones and the clutch, all brake pipes and the fuel pump were replaced. Original 240Z carburettors were sourced and fitted and the dynamometer report from August 2020 shows a very healthy 199bhp at the rear wheels.Very well-presented and impressively detailed, this dual purpose, fast road/rally Japanese classic has proved very competitive in Rally the Globe 'Class B3-Late Classic' and, perhaps more importantly, has been very reliable. It’s always better to return home under your own steam rather than on the back of a flatbed. This is a super example of a topical 1970s rally car, suitable for European Historic and Classic rallies, regularity runs or just club events here at home, and we welcome any inspection.Specification Make: DATSUN Model: 240Z Year: 1972 Chassis Number: HS3001622 Registration Number: JPK 4K Transmission: Manual Engine Number: L24061608 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 40970 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: BlackClick here for more details and images
An outstanding, fully restored and uprated GTV, re-imagined in the style of a GTA. A rare original right-hand drive UK Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV that has been totally restored, upgraded and re-imagined in the style of a GTA, rolling off the production line on 5th May 1970 before being delivered to London the following day, finished in Rosso Alfa with a Skai Nero interior. Now with a strengthened, lightweight shell by Bob Wright of Alfa Panels, this stunning GTV is powered by an uprated 2-litre Nord 'Big Valve' engine with Alfaholics Stage 2 components such as modified cams and cam seals, forged pistons, titanium cam-pulleys, new liners and new core plugs all built into a correctly prepared and cleaned block all mated to a freshly rebuilt 5-speed gearbox with fast-road clutch, all of which is superbly detailed, providing that certain 'wow' factor when lifting the bonnet. All ancillaries are new or fully refurbished including a new radiator, water and oil pumps and the rebuilt high-torque starter. As you would expect, the drivetrain has also received serious attention including vented and grooved disc brakes all round, Koni Sport Classic dampers and fast-road springs, a 29mm anti-roll bar with lightweight Alfaholics wishbones and high castor kit with built in bump steer correction, adjustable drop-links and new poly bushed mounts. It's fitted with a 2000 GTV 3:3 rear axle with LSD and 2000 GTV calipers to assist with stopping power to cope with the enhanced power, which is estimated to be in the region of 190bhp, (dyno read outs are available), a considerable increase over standard, sitting on a set of Alfaholic 7"x15" alloys with Pirelli 195/50/15 tyres.Internally, the dashboard has been remanufactured incorporating full instrumentation and revised electrics but the most notable features are the seats, custom built and retrimmed incorporating the present owners family tartan with adjustable seat rails and mounts, all fitting in as if they were factory items. An in-depth build was recently completed by Melliard Motorsport to the very highest of standards, with impressive attention to detail, resulting in a fast-road Alfa that will not fail to impress. The defining RS of its era with all the right ingredients, just 27,000 miles, the Custom Pack, RSOC ownership history and in superb condition. The Escort RS Turbo Series 1 was specifically developed by Ford’s Special Vehicle Engineering team to set new standards in 'Group N' and 'Group A' motorsport events, and was quickly dubbed 'the car to beat'. Ford initially planned to build 5,000 examples, the minimum number required for Homologation in 'Group A', however a total of 8,604 were built due to increased demand. The car was greeted with huge enthusiasm and was only sold through official Rallye Sport dealers. The much-revered Series 1 cars utilised a 1,600cc CVH unit modified to suit the higher loads and the application of a turbocharger. Computerised fuel-injection and state-of-the-art engine management (in 1986) incorporating boost control resulted in a healthy 132bhp and offered reasonably lag-free acceleration with 0-62mph, taking 8.2 seconds on the way to around 125mph. It was the first front-wheel drive road car in the world to use a compact viscous-coupling design LSD instead of a normal mechanical LSD, which greatly improved cornering and drivability.Aesthetically, the RS Turbo was given a distinctive sporty appearance with a body-coloured front grille, bumpers and aerodynamic aids. Unusually, there was only one choice of finish, Diamond White, and the purposeful interior was trimmed in a combination of Monza and Cashmere fabrics and Recaro LS bucket seats were fitted as standard. The car presented here is a 1985 Escort RS Turbo Custom S1, originally supplied new through the well-established Ford dealership Bryan Brothers Ltd. of Bristol (window stickers and a tax disc holder still testify) and came fitted with the factory-specified ‘Custom Pack’ which included electric windows, central locking, tilt/slide glass sunroof and opening rear quarter windows. It has covered just 27,019 miles from new and was purchased by our vendor from his friend back in 2013.Over the years, it has been owned and enjoyed by members of the RS Owners Club, benefiting from the care and attention which comes with this sort of dutiful ownership. In 2010, it was inspected by the RSOC who, based on its condition and information supplied, wrote a letter to say that its (then) mileage of 25,953 miles was wholly commensurate with its original condition. Our vendor tells us 'There have never been any repairs or welding on the car due to corrosion/rot, it’s all extremely solid, as it has always been very well-undersealed. In recent years, the car had a full/professional respray (being stripped to the bare shell in preparation). I also had all the running gear and suspension components painted (as they were just starting to look a bit tired) and I wanted it all clean and tidy. You can see on the suspension arms that they are not all marled from existing corrosion pits, they are all original just repainted. It still has the original S1 shocks!'This, now highly collectable, RS is accompanied by a decent history file and, remarkably, its original Michelin MXV 195/50 VR15 tyres, exhaust and plug leads, plus both keys and its original/complete bookpack. This car has obviously always been very well-maintained, stored to the highest standards and used infrequently, definitely one for the collector!Specification Make: FORD Model: ESCORT RS TURBO S1 Year: 1985 Chassis Number: WF0BXXGCABFJ08739 Registration Number: B460 XHU Transmission: Manual Engine Number: FJ08739 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 27019 Miles Make: RHDClick here for more details and images
One of the very last Phase One Clio Williams with only 48,770 miles, low-ownership and an impressive service history. Presented here is exactly the Renault Clio Williams that any enthusiast or collector would want to seriously think about owning. When the first owner had it in his garage for over 25 years and his address begins with 'The Vicarage', you know you are onto something. Supplied to him new by Renault Dealer, Bridge Valley Motors of Dorchester, in January 1994, it has a comprehensive service history and every MOT to corroborate the mileage of only 48,770. It still sports its original Renault dealer number plates, original Renault Owners Card, original stereo, handbooks, Williams F1 brochure and original parcel shelf carrying case.It was serviced by the Renault Dealer, Bridge Motors, all the way through to 2000 and then by Frodsham Motors, the Renault Dealer in Bridport. From 2007 C&A Rawlings, a family business, serviced it until 2018 and it was then sold to its second owner in 2019. Throughout this time, in addition to normal servicing, the wheel bearings, discs and belts have been changed (Cam Belt 2014 – 43,563 miles). In 2019, and with a mileage of 47,452, Safwat Cars serviced the Clio and replaced various seals and repaired the radio. ASM Classics of Sevenoaks in 2020 replaced the clutch and shock absorbers and conducted a full service. It had an exhaust in 2021, another service in 2022 and additional work right up to March 2023.With such a prefect timeline, just two previous owners, a full MOT pack and service history from day one, and all the essential original features, this cossetted little Clio is very much of the right stuff for its next discerning owner.Specification Make: RENAULT Model: CLIO WILLIAMS Year: 1994 Chassis Number: VF1C57M0510863291 Registration Number: L531 BRU Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 00C5616 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 48770 Miles Make: RHDClick here for more details and images
Remarkably original example of the rightly idolised whale-tail 'Cossie', on offer from passionate, 32-year, enthusiast ownership. At its introduction in 1982, the Sierra's revolutionary new shape proved a touch more divisive than Ford had anticipated and some serious marketing became a priority, so it was the obvious choice to become the platform for Ford's new competition aspirations in conjunction with Cosworth. It fitted the brief well as it was rear-wheel drive, had good aerodynamics, albeit being prone to lift at high speeds, and was available as a three-door. The new body kit and rear spoiler would sort out the lift issues but, more importantly, Ford still needed to build 5,000 units for homologation, somewhat worrying when the company's initial approach to the dealer network came back with an estimate that suggested they could sell around 1,500 units! The eventual sales record is, of course, history. Ford went on to sell 5,545 three-door cars including the RS500, of which only 500 were built, and the Cosworth engine also found its way into nearly 30,000 Ford Sierra Saloons (Cosworth three-door, Sapphire two-wheel drive, and four-wheel drive). This cherished example was first registered on 24th November 1986 and the car was subsequently sold twice in its first four years before being purchased by our enthusiast vendor, a Ford employee at the time, who has loved, cherished and maintained the car since then. Equally as impressive as the 32-year ownership is the low and warranted mileage of just 27,715, corroborated by older MOTs and service stamps in the dealer service record. Finished in Ford Motorsport Diamond White with the infamous grey cloth interior, the car presents impeccably well cosmetically and mechanically and remains in truly remarkable original condition. Many cars represent part of the family, and as a Ford technician at the time, and remaining a Ford enthusiast, it is undeniably fantastic to see such a well-maintained example, retaining its totally original specification and held on to the car for all these years, not because of any potential gain, but purely out of the love for this Cosworth. It is an incredibly special car that has always lived in the garage, being maintained and kept as pristine as possible. The car is complemented by a good history file containing the all-important original service book, service schedule and invoices for parts over the years, as well as a selection of old MOTs. Pleasingly correct and immaculately presented, this RS Cosworth comes with all the correct documentation, an impressive history file and the kudos of its FoMoCo heritage. So seldom seen in such fabulous condition with such impressive originality and a wonderful ownership story, this is one of the finest Sierra Cosworths to come to market in recent times. One of just 78 examples of the Rouse Sport 304R featuring a bespoke Sport Package developed by Andy Rouse Engineering. Just 78 Rouse Sport 304Rs were produced, with only a small percentage of those thought to still exist today, making it a rare and increasingly desirable member of the Performance Ford family. The Sports Package was developed by Andy Rouse in conjunction with Ford Motor Company to provide further depth to the Ford Cosworth range, and consisted of the body kit/aero pack with a body coloured 'C' pillar, a smaller Garrett T25 Turbo and remapped ECU providing a further 40bhp, plus slightly larger tyres and an upgraded interior including Rouse seats and door cards with optional mahogany accents. At an additional cost of £4,500 plus VAT, this was not a cheap option at the time, probably dictating why so few were produced.First registered on 18th December 1990, this exceptional one-owner Sapphire Cosworth Rouse Sport 304R, No. 045/100, is thought to be one of the rarest Cosworths to still exist. Finished in its original shade of Moonstone Blue with Raven hide, it was supplied by Peacocks of Balham to the current owner. With a comprehensive restoration having been carried out by Chariots of East Sussex between 2009 and 2013, including a full engine rebuild by Julian Godfrey, the Cosworth Specialist, and with minimal use since, the overall condition remains outstanding with our fastidious vendor recently returning the vehicle to Chariots for a full health check prior to being offered for sale. It should also be noted that the registration number TIA 428 was assigned at date of first registration and will remain with the vehicle when title passes to a new custodian. It's accompanied by a comprehensive history file containing the original purchase invoice, original book pack and various other invoices. This largely ignored Cosworth model has recently come back to the attention of Ford aficionados with interest reignited and desirability increasing at a pace. With so few still in existence, and even less in this condition, this particular 304R is certainly worthy of a place in any serious Blue Oval collection. More hyped than any production car we can remember and currently unavailable in the UK, this Platinum White Circuit Pack car has covered just over 3,500 miles. When Toyota decided that they wanted their many years of success in International Rallying to continue, the initial problem was selecting a model that was going to be competitive in coming years. The regulations that govern WRC rallying dictate that your car has to be based on an existing road car, a process known as ‘homologation’, and although your rally car can deviate from the road formula in many areas, in most key ones it can’t. In the past, manufacturers were able to get around this because the regs didn’t insist on too many road-going versions, maybe 2,000 or even less, however that figure is now 25,000. Few manufacturers would even countenance building 25,000 seriously focussed rally cars and hope to find homes for them, but Toyota, always up for a challenge, did just that. Based on their successful little Yaris, and developed alongside their Gazoo Racing World Rally Team, the GR Yaris made its debut in late 2020.This technological miracle may look like a Yaris but the similarities are few and far between. The roof is carbon fibre saving 3.5kg, the door skins, bonnet and tailgate are aluminium, removing another 24kg and the front half of the chassis is Yaris but the rear is adapted from the Corolla and CH-R. It has the Yaris’ 2,560mm wheelbase, its light clusters, door mirrors and roof fin but that’s about it. Under the bonnet is the world’s most powerful production three-cylinder engine, a 1.6-litre with 257bhp and 266lb/ft. It features a unique block, bespoke pistons and a single-scroll, ball-bearing turbo to reduce weight with the engine itself being hydraulically mounted on one side to reduce vibration and unwanted movement. All cars were fitted with a 6-speed manual gearbox and a remarkably light, four-wheel drive system with an aluminium central transfer case and Sport and Track Modes. At the rear, there’s an electronically-controlled clutch pack to divide torque between the wheels. When new, the GR Yaris was available with a Convenience Pack or, as here, the Circuit Pack (£3,500) designed for drivers who want the ultimate in handling response and precision. This option included lightweight 18'' BBS forged alloys, retuned suspension, mechanical front and rear Torsen diffs, red brake calipers and Michelin Pilot 4S tyres.Finished in Platinum White Pearl and fitted from new with the Circuit Pack option, this is a UK-supplied GR that’s being offered from its first owner, Iconic Auctioneers Chairman, Nick Whale. With decades of competition experience and much success both on the circuit and in European rallying in a huge variety of cars, Nick's judgement is pretty sound on a car's qualities and, in his opinion, the little GR Yaris is one of the most exciting, adrenaline-generating, addictive performance saloons he's ever driven.Just 3,500 miles were showing on the odometer at the time of cataloguing, and the car is in the sort of condition that you might expect considering its tiny mileage and fastidious ownership. Original panels, original paint and essentially unmarked. Being offered at a very sensible and tempting guide price, this is a true modern-day ‘homologation special’, yet effortless everyday transport and currently, undoubtedly 'super cool'.Specification Make: TOYOTA Model: GR YARIS Year: 2022 Chassis Number: JTDAF4E330A021187 Registration Number: RE72WRO Transmission: Manual Engine Number: G160032431 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Make: RHDClick here for more details and images
A superbly presented example of the desirable second generation 991, fitted with the sublime manual gearbox. Introduced late in 2015, the second generation 991 (now known as the 991 Gen 2) was the first entry-level 911 to be powered by a 3-litre turbocharged engine, and was regarded by critics and the motoring press alike as a major improvement in all respects. It offered more power, better handling, better 'infotainment' and SatNav, complemented by a major interior upgrade, and generally engendered much more confidence in those approaching modern 911 ownership for the first time, as well as experienced 'neunelfers'. This was the model to have in the range according to the specialist motoring press. They waxed lyrical about the entry-level 911 Carrera which offered the most useable daily driver 911 for many years, with less road noise and a much better ride quality/handling balance than the 'S' version and heaped praise on the car's 7-speed manual gearbox which was 'the cherry on the cake'.Intrigued by this potential, practicality and performance, our Iconic Auctioneers Chairman and long-term 911 owner, Nick Whale, set about finding a really good, lightly-used example for his daily use. An exceptional example of the 5-litre R107 with just 65,200 miles from new and a detailed ownership and service history from ‘Day One’. Offered with No Reserve. This delightful Mercedes-Benz 500SL, finished in Smoke Silver with black leather, dates from early 1986 and was initially supplied by Glen Henderson, (Stuggart) Ltd. to Archer Car Sales in Airdrie, and onwards to its first owner, Phillips Electrical Ltd., on 14th February of that year for the use of one of their directors. It subsequently passed to Island Publishing Ltd. to be enjoyed by Peter Van De Rey, who was Dutch but lived in England. Throughout this period, according to the service records, it was looked after by Mercedes Dealers, and serviced at 701, 5,976, 11,901, 17,642, 24,632 and 30,716 miles. At this point, it continued its life in the world of media and music, being purchased by A-Z Music Services at around 35,000 miles for Patrick Prendergast. Once again, the maintenance record is continuous with attention from Alan Day, Mercedes and Cairnmead BMW with invoices on file. In 1996, Mr Prendergast offered the car to a friend, Steve Fernie of Cold Harbour Recording, who later transferred the registration into his own name in 1998. He retained the car for 14 years but it was little used, covering only a few thousand miles, but was started often, had regular oil changes and was looked after by M-B specialist, Derrick Wells. The car was purchased by our vendor in April 2010 to add to his collection of SL Mercedes. He bought it primarily because of its condition but nevertheless sent it to a marque specialist to check for any rust, including the important bulkhead area. Although generally very good, our vendor is particularly fastidious and decided to have the car stripped and resprayed, refurbish the wheels, fit new tyres, replace the heater fan unit and carry out various other small works. When it was complete, it was sent to D Class Automotive who fitted a replacement hood and replaced the door, hood and other seals - a time-consuming job.Since then it has remained in his SL Collection and used sparingly during the summer months. Over the years, that use has decreased, so the decision was taken to sell it and it was entrusted to Pentangle Mercedes in April of this year for a pre-sale recommission. The account for this amounted to £2,526.87, bringing our vendor’s total investment during his ownership to £13,851.47. These invoices are in the history file alongside others from previous ownership. The file also contains 15 MOT Certificates corroborating the indicated mileage, the service record, Owners Manual, electric aerial instructions and the usual dealer-supplied book pack. It even retains its original First Aid kit, warning triangle, jack and tool roll. The Cherished Registration Number C22 JDS will remain on the car. This is an exceptional example of the 5-litre R107 with just 65,200 miles from new and a detailed ownership and service history from day one. A rare, second-generation, soft top example of Mazda's powerful RX-7 Turbo, freshly recommissioned and looking good - offered at No Reserve. Following the demise of NSU's Ro80, Mazda was left as the only major automobile manufacturer using the Wankel rotary engine. An entire range of rotary-engined models was developed during the 1970s, but by the decade's end, the RX-7 sports car was the only one of its type selling in significant numbers outside Japan. Powered by a twin-rotor Wankel of, nominally, 2.3-litres displacement, the pretty RX-7 coupé had debuted in 1978. Maximum power increased from 105 to 115bhp from 1981 - good enough for a top speed of 125mph, an excellent straight-line performance that the RX-7 combined with handling and grip on a par with European rivals. Restyled for 1986, the second generation car was fitted with a new, more powerful engine and improved rear suspension at the same time. A turbocharged variant was introduced in 1988, becoming available in convertible form the following year, and with 200bhp available was capable of a, claimed, 148mph with the top up.This second generation RX7 Turbo Cabriolet was supplied new by Charles Follett Ltd. in London on 15th May 1992 and is accompanied by a list of older owners up until it was acquired by its previous owner in November 2004 and subsequently our vendor in September 2019. There is a massive invoice file detailing work on the car from 1996 right up to date. (See Summary on file) and the service records indicate regular main dealer servicing up until 2001. Thereafter, work was covered by Rotary Engine Specialists with comprehensive invoices on file including the engine change in January 2005 by Hurley Engineering, a year before it was laid up.More recently, the car was fully recommissioned with all fluids changed and thoroughly examined. Numerous works were carried out which included a thorough overhaul of the fuel system, replacing fuel lines, cleaning injectors, etc., brake lines replaced, callipers refurbished and new OEM Mazda brake discs fitted with new pads, the wheels were refurbished and fitted with new tyres, the hood mechanism was cleaned, lubricated and refitted with a new rear roof section fitted, obtained from America, and underneath some rust was found behind the sills and the interior was stripped for a full repair with rust proofing. The paintwork is generally very good, and overall the car is therefore described by its enthusiast owner to be in excellent condition, having passed it’s MOT with no advisories. The Rotary engine was replaced about 12,000 miles ago and is very sweet. The engine bay is very clean with plated items, etc in excellent condition. It retains the battery cover, often missing. In the boot, the carpet is excellent with the correct tonneau cover, tool roll, wheel chocks and jack. Also present is the original black book pack containing the handbook, service booklet and instructions for the radio cassette. It even has the period Mazda sales brochure and a further service and Owners Manual on CD-Rom. It comes with two correct Mazda keys.A now rare Collectors' item, it is unusual to find one in this condition - an opportunity not to be missed.Specification Make: MAZDA Model: RX-7 TURBO Year: 1992 Chassis Number: JMZFC183200202499 Registration Number: J429 DYK Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 13BE078671 Make: Click here for more details and images
An excellent example of the special-edition WRX UK300, created to celebrate Richard Burns and Robert Reid winning the World Rally Championship in 2001. In 2001 Richard Burns and his co-driver Robert Reid won their first, and only, World Rally Championship title driving a Prodrive-prepared Subaru Impreza. In celebration of this achievement Subaru worked with Prodrive and the designer of the WRC car, Peter Stevens, to create a special-edition Impreza for the UK market, limited to 300 cars - the UK300.Based on the WRX model, the UK300 was essentially a trim level upgrade with a list price of £24,995. The model provided the following extras over and above the standard WRX available at the time:Prodrive WRC Style headlightsProdrive front lip spoilerProdrive rear high-level spoilerProdrive/OZ Racing 18" gold alloys with Pirelli P-Zero tyresWhite side markers and indicators on the wingsUK300 badges on the wings, boot and intercoolerBlue Lux Suede interiorUK300 logos on the footwell mats and on the boot carpetNumbered interior plaque with UK300 logoWR Blue paintworkWhile the cars were Prodrive-styled, they did not come with the Prodrive Performace Pack (referred to as the WR Sport Performance Pack in the brochure) as standard, instead this was offered as a £1,600 optional extra. Our example here is number 295/300 and is in fantastic condition. It has only travelled 18,000 miles and comes with a full service history including a recent cambelt service. Finished in World Rally Blue with a Blue Lux Suede interior, Imprezas in this condition rarely appear and, with the cachet of the Richard Burns connection, it’s a must for any enthusiast or collector.Specification Make: SUBARU Model: IMPREZA Year: 2001 Chassis Number: JF1GDAKD31G009390 Registration Number: Y5 UBY Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 248401 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 18000 Miles Make: RHDClick here for more details and images
One of only 80 right-hand drive examples of these contemporary classic Jaguars with just 488 miles from new. In 2012, nearly 40 years after the E-Type's demise, Jaguar finally got around to announcing the long-awaited and much-rumoured F-Type, which would turn out to be a more worthy spiritual successor to its illustrious forbearer than either the preceding XK8 or, before that, the XJS. A front-engined, rear-wheel-drive two-seater, the F-Type is built on an aluminium chassis, cleverly configured to minimise the transmission of noise and vibration to the passenger compartment, while its suspension is the supercar-standard arrangement of double wishbones all round, with adaptive dampers and adjustable settings. Multiple driving modes cater for different road conditions and driving styles.Unlike the E-Type, the F-Type was available with a wide variety of different power plants, ranging from a turbocharged 2-litre four via a 3-litre turbo V6 to a supercharged 5.0-litre V8. A ZF 8-speed paddle-shift semi-automatic transmission was standard on all models at first, with a 6-speed manual available later on the V6. The F-Type debuted at the Paris Motor Sow in September 2012 in convertible form, with the fixed-head coupé following in 2014. Nowadays it is de rigeur for car stylists to reference past models in their latest creations, and to some observers, the coupé's rear recalled that of one of the rarest of E-Types: the low-drag factory racer. To cater for the sports car market's seemingly insatiable appetite for limited edition models, Jaguar launched the 400 Sport – produced for just one year – and Project 7, which would be built in a run of only 250 cars. Project 7 had first seen the light of day as a single-seater concept car shown at Goodwood, and so favourable was the reception that it was decided to press ahead with making a more practical two-seater production version. They soon sold out, with 80 assigned to customers in the UK. The 'Project 7' designation referenced Jaguar's seven Le Mans wins, while the 'Aero Haunch' behind the driver's head was an obvious nod towards the D-Type sports-racer responsible for three of those victories. An aggressive-looking shallow-screen 'barchetta', Project 7 has all-aluminium bodywork and is powered by the 5-litre supercharged V8, up-rated to produce 567bhp, 25bhp more than in the F-Type R. Coupled with a 45kg weight reduction, this makes Project 7 the fastest accelerating F-Type yet, with a 0-60mph (0-97km/h) time of 3.8 seconds. Like many of the current crop of supercars, Project 7 is electronically limited to a top speed of 186mph (300kph). With the exhaust butterflies open (there's a special console switch), the car emits a superb growl-bark that turns into a magnificent crackle on the overrun. It's the one thing that makes you want to slow down. The 'top-end running gear' includes the 8-speed paddle-shift auto 'box; electronic differential; carbon ceramic brakes; specially tuned suspension; and unique settings for engine management and chassis stability control. SVO engineers also rebalanced and improved the car's rear-biased aerodynamic downforce by fitting side skirts and a large front splitter, while slightly reducing the effectiveness (and drag) of the boot lid wing. The result of Project 7's unique set of characteristics is a track-focused car capable of satisfying even the quickest of drivers.Supplied new by Stratstone of Mayfair, the fabulous Project 7 on offer here was first registered on 1st March 2016 as PRO7 JUR and is finished in the rather striking, special order hue of Metallic Goodwood Blue with a triple white stripe across the nose. It sits on a set 20" Storm Black Diamond Turned Alloys in front of bright yellow calipers and the paintwork has been treated to full PPF. The car was optioned from new with Project 7 Illuminated Tread Plates and was supplied with a bespoke car cover, two keys and an immobiliser which is currently not connected. It's fitted with the 'Jaguar Project 7 - 1 of 250' plaque and is accompanied by the rather lavish Dealer Book Pack containing its Certificate of Authenticity. Our vendor is currently the car's second owner, it has covered just 488 miles and, as you can imagine, its condition is simply spectacular. Upgraded by Bowler, bespoke styling and just 6,000 miles from new. Since its inception in 1985, Bowler Motors has developed a worldwide reputation in the area of design and construction of Land Rover-based off-road vehicles. Led by the company’s inspirational founder, Drew Bowler, until his untimely death in 2016, the company grew from a nascent workforce of just eight to the present group of 35 highly-skilled engineers. Initially focussing on the preparation of cars for British off-road events, the company's ambitions expanded rapidly to encompass participation in events including the Dakar Rally, Morocco Desert Challenge and Spanish Baja and, for the past two decades, their cars have formed the backbone of many Rally Raid events across the globe. In late 2019, Jaguar Land Rover acquired Bowler to add to their Special Vehicle Operations Division, seeing an opportunity for not just motorsport but the subtle enhancement of their current range, having admired the rapid, road-going examples given the Bowler treatment over the years. A fabulous example of such enhancements is this Firenze Red Defender 90 with black canvas soft-top and first registered on 28th July 2014. With less than 6,000 miles travelled, it has had brand new Recaro-style Black Leather Sports seats with matching facia, dashboard and cubby box with a Momo steering wheel also fitted.Recently fitted with all new 265 BF-Goodrich All Terrain tyres, a Bowler bespoke steering guard, rock sliders, gear levers, LED headlights, DRL bumper, safari snorkel, rear bulkhead deletion, genuine load area rubber mat, LED rear lights, NAS tow step, large diameter stainless steel sports exhaust, re-mapped ECU. An early EVO X GSR FQ-360 upgraded to (almost) FQ-400 spec on behalf of The Graham Dacre Charitable Foundation and showing just 3,550 miles. Based in Norwich, the Graham Dacre Charitable Foundation states that its aims are 'To support the development of young people in Norwich and Norfolk, to actively promote the Christian faith and to undertake other charitable activities'. We are pleased to have been asked to help with the sale of this rather special Lancer Evo as it's now surplus to their requirements.Offered here is a prototype EVO X (10) that has a very interesting history and played an integral part in a 'raising speed awareness' program instigated by the Norfolk Constabulary and very ably supported by the Foundation. Alongside a Porsche GT4, the EVO took part in their 'Young Driver Engagement Program' and was never used on patrol, but purely as a display car at schools and events. Resplendent in its police livery (a full wrap), it helped to raise speed awareness amongst young drivers and, we understand, had a very positive effect with a tangible reduction in the number of serious accidents involving younger drivers. It was selected by the Trust on the advice of a very senior policemen as the best visual machine of the day to put the message across. At the time, probably one of the most outrageous saloons on the market was the Mitsubishi EVO X GSR-FQ400, but a call into the Mitsubishi Headquarters to supply one was greeted with raised eyebrows because their allocation was completely sold out. However, keen to be a part of such a worthwhile scheme, a prototype/type approval EVO X GSR-FQ360 had languished in storage and the decision was made to upgrade it to RFQ400-spec with a body kit and the mechanical parts required. The result is an EVO X GSR-FQ400 in all but name that has covered just 3,550 miles. Now unwrapped and sparkling in its original P26 Orient Red, it had a 12,000 mile service with Mitsubishi in January this year and has only covered a nominal 20 miles since.Blistering performance or sedate motoring, this EVO X has it covered and with a very appropriate number plate.Specification Make: MITSUBISHI Model: LANCER EVO X Year: 2010 Chassis Number: CZ4A0004122 Registration Number: FX10 EVO Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 4B11BK8297 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 3550 Miles Make: RHDClick here for more details and images
Fabulous second-generation Interceptor with recent improvements and an outstanding, comprehensive restoration. Jensen's C-V8 replacement debuted in 1966, reviving a name first employed in the 1950s. However, several of the firm's traditions were broken in that the design was outsourced to Carrozzeria Touring and the bodies made of steel rather than glass fibre. Early shells were built by Vignale in Italy prior to production being established at Jensen's Kelvin Way plant in West Bromwich. Power came from a 6,276cc (383ci) Chrysler V8, driving through either a 4-speed manual or 3-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission, mated to an LSD Salisbury rear axle. Specification included electric windows, reclining seats, wood-rim steering wheel, radio with twin speakers, electric clock and reversing lights.Production of the Interceptor II (occasionally called the MkII or Series II) commenced in October 1969 and lasted for two years. This particular car has a chassis prefix, #123, so was one of 694 right-hand drive UK cars powered by the E-Series 383ci V8 generating around 330bhp. Pleasingly, it still wears its original registration number, HMK 6K, and from the history file we can see that it left the factory on 9th August 1971, finished in Silver Grey over black leather and optioned from new with Sundym Glass, Voxon Radio Cartridge Player, air-con, and Town & Country horns. The rebuild of this exquisite Jensen, undertaken by Kestrel Classic Cars of Redditch, Jensen marque specialists, commenced in 2013 but unfortunately stalled in late 2014 due to the owner's ill health, with the Interceptor not seeing light of day for the next seven years until the time was right to finish the build. Superbly presented in Stratosphere Blue with a full black hide interior, the ground-up rebuild shows excellent attention to detail throughout, setting this particular Interceptor II at a level that few achieve. The detailed restoration has left no stone unturned, including a complete, bare-metal body refurbishment, an engine, gearbox and drivetrain rebuild by American V8 Specialist David Gilliver, a total rewire, re-chroming by Derby Plating, a full retrim - in hide of course, all finished to the very highest of levels. The car has been sensibly upgraded for modern day usage including uprated cooling, a high-torque starter, an alternator and a modern air conditioning system.Previously purchased from us at Supercar Fest in 2022, the car has been further improved with the fitting of electronic ignition, electronic fuel pump, new alloy radiator and air conditioning condenser, as well as a rolling-road carb set-up to ensure the car runs and operates as well as it looks.Having been undervalued for many years, the Interceptor has recently seen somewhat of a resurgence with interest and demand for correctly restored examples increasing at a pace. Your earliest inspection is welcomed and encouraged to fully appreciate the lengths taken to return this elegant GT to the road.SpecificationMake: JENSENModel: INTERCEPTOR IIYear: 1971Chassis Number: 123/4228Registration Number: HMK 6KTransmission: AutomaticEngine Number: V2415123GDrive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 16741 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Black LeatherClick here for more details and images
One of only 295 right-hand drive examples, with its first owner for 32 years and just less than 33,000 miles from new. The Audi Quattro may not have been the first four-wheel drive production car (that honour belongs to the 1966 Jensen Interceptor FF), but its place in history is assured. Thanks in no small part to its enormous rallying success, the Quattro popularized all-wheel drive, and is now regarded as one of the most influential and important sports cars of the 1980s. The brainchild of Jorg Bensinger, an Audi chassis engineer, development work was started in 1977, and three years later, the finished product was released. Although the floor pan had much in common with the Audi 80 and the running gear was largely taken from an Audi 200, the Quattro used a manual centre differential lock (operated by levers next to the handbrake) to govern the 197bhp and 210lb/ft power outputs delivered by the 2.1-litre in-line five-cylinder turbocharged engine. By the time this particular car arrived in 1990, the crude cable-operated 50:50 split differential had been replaced with a much more advanced Torsen (torque sensing) diff, and the engine had been uprated with double overhead camshafts and a larger 2,226cc capacity, upping power to 217bhp.Finished in Panther Black Metallic with a Granite leather/cloth interior, this smart example was first registered by VAG Milton Keynes as their demonstrator, prior to being purchased in November 1990 by its first owner, who kept the vehicle for almost 32 years until becoming our vendor's property in June 2022. It has only covered 32,837 miles from new, with just two former registered keepers, and has patently been cherished, garaged all its life and is in remarkable condition. It has a fully stamped service record, with 17 service stamps which includes details of a fresh cambelt at 31,353 miles by The Quattro Workshop in Leicester, and is accompanied by a detailed history file with service receipts and MOT history, the original wallet with manuals etc., original sales brochure, the spare key and original key code tag. It will be treated to a fresh MOT and full service prior to our sale. This is a genuine, low-mileage, 20-valve Quattro in very good condition with a superb history and would enhance any collection and be a great talking point at local shows and events. A rare and desirable Trans Am Y82 Special-Edition, fitted with the 'W72' Performance Pack and a manual gearbox. Pontiac’s Firebird left behind its roots as one of GM’s first Pony Cars in the late 1960s to become an automotive icon, famous for its starring roles in Smokey and the Bandit and Knight Rider. The second-generation model introduced in 1970 maintained the Firebird’s performance image whilst adding a European-inspired level of sophistication. The Oil Crisis may have stolen some of the muscle car’s 'mojo' by the 1970s, but Pontiac made up for the lack of horsepower in other ways, adding bold new graphics (including the famous 'Screaming Chicken' bonnet decal) and popular options like the T-bar roof. The Firebird was extensively restyled for 1977, and featured an aggressive new front end with a recessed black grille and four rectangular headlamps. Four models were available, ranging from the entry-level Firebird to the more upmarket Esprit and Formula variants, but the legendary Trans Am remained the most popular by far, accounting for almost half the total sales. Fitted with a new shaker hood, the Trans Am still had a massive 400-ci (6.6-litre) V8 as standard, rated at 200bhp and an abundance of low-down torque. Inside, the Trans Am’s cabin featured a machine-turned dash finish, additional gauges and Formula padded steering wheel, while the Turbo Hydramatic transmission was standard equipment, along with power front disc brakes and radial tuned suspension. A manual gearbox was an option but rarely selected in the US making manual cars now very hard to find. The Y82 was introduced in 1977 to coincide with the release of Smokey and the Bandit 1 movie and were originally supplied in Black with Eagle decals and glass T-tops. Unlike this car, most black Trans Ams have been painted black in homage to the film car and consequently, with a manual gearbox and the W72 Performance Pack, this car is extremely rare. The original build-spec has been verified by Pontiac Historical Services and is within the history file. The car is also an Aircon car and, although the system has been removed, many of the parts are included in the sale. The mileage is believed to be original but this cannot be confirmed. In America, the Y82 is considered to be the Holy Grail of all Trans Ams and, at the 2022 Mecum Harrisburg auction, a low-mileage example, which was not a manual box or performance pack car, sold for $400,000.Unusually, the car was imported to the UK in 1980, very early on in its life, and was used from 1980 until 1992 at which point it was put into storage where it remained for the next 20 years or so. A previous owner bought the car in 2013 and set about returning the car to the road, with the work being completed in 2014. Accompanying the car is an interesting history file containing lots of invoices and receipts along with a copy of the original build sheet, Owners Manuals, UK V5C and correspondence with the UK Pontiac Owners Club. The current owner enjoys a small eclectic private Collection which includes many 'best-of-breed' American cars, and he acquired the Trans Am a few years ago having purchased it on the basis of its rarity being a 1977 manual gearbox car with the Y82 and W72 packages. There have been some significant prices achieved for these rare cars in recent years and, at this guide price, this certainly seems like a very interesting proposition. We welcome and encourage your inspection of this rare Firebird at our NEC Classic Car Show Sale.Specification Make: PONTIAC Model: FIREBIRD TRANS AM SE Year: 1977 Chassis Number: 2W87Z7N180355 Registration Number: VGC562W Transmission: Manual Engine Number: ZW87Z7N180355 Drive Side: Left-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 57752 Miles Make: LHDClick here for more details and images
A lovely left-hand drive example, restored to a very high standard at a cost of over £50,000. A progressive development of the sensational XK120 and XK140, the XK150 retained the same basic chassis, 3.4-litre engine and 4-speed Moss transmission of its predecessors but, partly due to the growing US demand for more comfortable and refined sports cars, benefited from an entirely new body providing increased interior space and improved visibility courtesy of a single-piece wrap-around windscreen. A higher front wing line and broader radiator grille were other obvious differences but the new model's main talking point was its Dunlop disc brakes; at last the XK had stopping power to match its prodigious straight-line speed. Introduced in the spring of 1957, the XK150 was available at first only in fixed and drophead coupé forms, the open roadster (OTS) version not appearing until the following year.According to its Jaguar Heritage Certificate, this well-presented left-hand drive XK150 3.4 Roadster was despatched to Jaguar Cars, New York on 30th May 1958 and onwards to its first US owner. In more recent times, the XK150 was repatriated to the these shores where a comprehensive restoration was undertaken. The work was obviously extensive, with over £50,000 invested, and the results speak for themselves. The bodywork was taken down to bare metal and classically refinished in Old English White, all the brightwork was re-chromed and polished, the interior was retrimmed in navy blue leather to a very high standard, new chrome wire wheels were fitted, the matching numbers engine was rebuilt and, naturally, every other mechanical aspect of the venerable Jaguar received similar care and attention.Accompanying the car is a history file containing a quantity of invoices, the aforementioned Heritage Certificate and photographs of the work carried out, all available for your inspection at our Documents Desk when you view the car, which we invite and encourage in order to appreciate the quality on offer.Specification Make: JAGUAR Model: XK150 ROADSTER Year: 1958 Chassis Number: S830464 Registration Number: 928 UYY Transmission: Manual Engine Number: V3917-8 Drive Side: Left-hand Drive Make: LHD Interior Colour: Navy BlueClick here for more details and images
This stunning R-Type was bodied in Aluminium by E.D. Abbott of Farnham in 'Continental' style. Only a handful were created, and offer fabulous styling for a fraction of the cost of the celebrated Fastback Continental. In June 1952, Bentley’s new R-Type was presented to the public and it owed its name to the fact that the VI Series had, by this time, reached the chassis letter 'R'. The new model continued to utilise the MkVI’s independent front suspension, hydraulic front brakes and six-cylinder 'F-head' power unit, by now extended to 4,566cc. The standard R-Type was a lively performer, achieving 106mph in silence and reached 50mph from standstill in ten seconds, despite a curb weight approaching two tonnes. As usual, the R-Type could be ordered in chassis form for bodying by specialist coachbuilders, and this manual transmission example was the work of E.D. Abbott of Farnham, Surrey. The stylish, streamlined, Continental-style fastback coupé coachwork, designed by Abbott's stylist, Peter Woodgate, had been intended for the superseded MkVI chassis and bore more than a passing resemblance to H J Mulliner's contemporary Bentley Continental. After two prototypes had been completed, Abbott bodied 14 'production' cars, this example being the first. Of the remaining 13, one was fitted with automatic transmission and one was built with left-hand drive. We understand that this example was sold new to The Earl of Sefton, bodied in Aluminium and presented as a two-door ‘Continental’ style coupé in Ascot Grey.OYE 700 is accompanied by a fascinating history file which contains a list of previous owners, confirming that the car’s first owner was indeed the Rt. Hon. Earl of Sefton at Croxteth Hall. In 1968 it became the property of Richard Clover from Worcester and, ten years later, it was registered to the Midland Record Company (Peter John Riley). Jeremy Pemberton of Yellowhammer PLC acquired the Bentley in 1990 before selling it in 2004 to specialists dealers Frank Dale and Stepsons who, according to invoices in the file, carried out quite a lot of work on the car. A Michael Percival is listed as owning the car in 2004 with Eric Adkins in 2005, prior to Mr and Mrs Silverstone, also in 2005. The famous car-collecting dentist, Dr James Hull, added it to his Collection in late 2009 and, naturally, it moved to a previous vendor’s significant Collection around 2012 when Dr Hull sold everything. There are a number of older invoices with the car and it appears that by 1985, whilst in Peter Riley’s custodianship, the Bentley was looking a little sad. A.B.Price, Automobile Engineers of Studley provided an 'estimate' dated 4th February 1985 for 'totally stripping coachwork, rebuilding corroded and damaged panelwork, re-cellulosing the car, replacing wood frame in body structure, completely refitting the interior woodwork and reassembling all fittings etc'. The estimate totalled £14,338. Invoices over the next 18 months totalled over £20,000 from A.B.Price and detail the work completed. Later invoices over the years from Frank Dale & Stepsons and Hillier Hill detail subsequent maintenance and repairs, with the most recent one dated 8th October 2011, recording the odometer reading of 50,572 miles. The history file also contains a number of old V5s, a dozen older MOTs, lots of correspondence, the original ‘buff’ logbook, its R-Type Bentley Handbook, an article by Bill Medcalf entitled 'R-Type Continentals' and a booklet titled ‘Twenty Years of Crewe Bentleys’. There is also a letter from Bentley confirming that, should the opportunity arise, they would be delighted to display OYE 700 at the factory as part of 'The Bentley Experience'.OYE 700 is currently owned by a private Collector who has recently spent over £1,200 with DA Cooper in Sussex on some mechanical work to ensure the car is in splendid shape for the next owner. This was the first of the Abbotts of Farnham aluminium-bodied cars, and one can only imagine the sort of attention the 'swoopy' Continental bodywork would have generated back in 1954, matched only by the sort of admiration it would garner in 2023. This car is effectively the same as a manual Mulliner R-Type Continental, but at a fraction of the price, and rarer. Both cars are alloy-bodied and drive identically. We encourage you to view this remarkable piece of automotive art in the metal and to appreciate the sheer quality on offer.Specification Make: BENTLEY Model: R-TYPE COUPE BY ABBOTT Year: 1954 Chassis Number: B393SP Registration Number: OYE 700 Transmission: Manual Engine Number: B446S Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 51171 Miles Make: RHDClick here for more details and images
Restored by specialists Arthur Archer and one of only 50 of these exquisite sports saloons, this short-wheelbase 4-Litre has been owned by some of the very best collectors, a true connoisseur's car. The Bentley 4-Litre was the old Cricklewood company's swansong model before its absorption by Rolls-Royce. With the Depression biting, sales of the old 4½-Litre were declining and, with its newest 8-Litre model costing all of £1,850 in chassis-only form, Bentley Motors desperately needed a new smaller model to compete with Rolls-Royce's successful 20/25hp. The result was the 4-Litre. The six-cylinder engine was designed by Ricardo, with overhead inlet/side exhaust valves and a claimed output of 120bhp at 4,000rpm. A double-drop chassis was adopted, closely based on that of the contemporary Bentley 8-Litre, and offered in two wheelbase lengths - 11' 2" and 11' 8", both of which were shorter than the shortest of the two 8-Litre chassis available. Although 'W.O.' apparently did not like the Ricardo design (considering it difficult to tune) the fundamental soundness of the inlet-over-exhaust arrangement was aptly demonstrated post-war, with engines of this configuration powering Bentley and Rolls-Royce motor cars up to 1959. The 4-Litre was not fully understood in-period and much maligned yet, with the benefit of hindsight, it had the best chassis, gearbox and rear axle of all the pre-war Bentleys, proving ideal to be converted into 6½- and 8-Litre specials in later years. Only 50 '4-Litres' were completed before the original Bentley company's liquidation, with only a dozen believed to exist today. This rather handsome 4-Litre Sports Saloon (Chassis #VF 4011) dates from 1931, and was purchased by our vendor from North Wales in 2019. It was described at the time of his purchase as 'The car is matching numbers with the original engine, steering box etc. and the restoration included an extensive mechanical overhaul of the engine, chassis and all running gear as well as totally rebuilding an original, very handsome, Gurney Nutting body with twin side-mounted spare wheels, louvred bonnet and scuttle, ‘trouser crease' wings etc. The quality of the reconstruction of the coachwork and the attention to detail are really something to behold, showing dedication, genuine enthusiasm and a desire to make the coachwork indistinguishable from the original.'#VF 4011 has a fascinating history and was delivered new to J.M. Robertson of 45, West Nile Street, Glasgow wearing a Weymann saloon body by Freestone & Webb. Two years later, it had migrated south to A.R. Timson of Kettering and, in 1937, it passed to J.W. Tompkins of Peterborough. The old buff log book with the car cites Dr Benjamin Spiers of Harley St. as the owner in January 1949. Dr Spiers was responsible for having a rakish Drophead Coupé alloy body fitted to the car, which was assumed to have replaced war-damaged or modified bodywork, as its use in that period is not known. It was in this form that its next owner purchased the car from Harvey Hudson & Co. Ltd. of South Woodford, Essex in April 1954. He fondly recalls haring around the Essex countryside in the 4-Litre as a young man and having enjoyed it immensely, but within a year, his impending marriage curtailed these activities and forced him to advertise the car for sale. It was offered in Motorsport magazine, where it was listed as having had £1,500 spent since 1945, and a recent engine rebuild by McKenzies, but with no buyers forthcoming, and a need still to economise, the car was laid up on blocks until 1986. It was then that the 4-Litre was booked into Arthur Archer's esteemed restoration works in Dunmow, Essex in September 1986 for an engine overhaul. This rebuild quickly developed into a complete restoration of the chassis and running gear and, as this work neared completion, the owner and restorer were faced with a conundrum over the car's bodywork. It made little sense to restore the 1940s body as this was an anachronism for the 1930s car, but unfortunately no photos existed of this car as new. At this point, fortune played its part when another 4-Litre was discovered locally. Despite that car's derelict condition it retained a front and a back door from its original bodywork, a Gurney Nutting saloon, and a period photograph of the bodywork existed. With enough to work from, it was decided to replicate that car's Gurney Nutting bodywork for #VF 4011. The design in question was fitted originally to chassis #VA 4076, as illustrated in Johnnie Green's Bentley, 50 years of the Marque on page 135. There is little doubt of the quality and eye for detail with which the car's bodywork was remade, Archer's motto of 'Older than the Industry' being testament to their familiarity with all aspects of restoration, including coachbuilding. The new coachwork was exquisitely painted in a two-tone livery and trimmed in deep red leather hide, its interior being appointed with period correct vanity units, correct dashboard instrumentation and even a tool storage area behind the rear seat. In total, the cost of the 12-year rebuild amounted to some £90,000, for which each and every bill is available, many dating from the late 1980s when labour was considerably less than today. Upon its completion, the Bentley was first shown at the Bentley Driver's Club Annual Concours in 1998 and was lightly used over the following years before being offered to market in 2010.Between 2010 and our vendor’s purchase in 2019, #VF 4011 (still registered as GT 1094) at some point was owned by one of Ireland’s most celebrated collectors and enthusiasts, Jimmy Boland, who used the Bentley on the Gordon Bennet Rally, and it was well-maintained as part of his extensive collection. Equally, our vendor has continued the car's history of cosseted ownership and regular maintenance during the last four years, keeping the car in climate-controlled storage when not in use. This is a well-restored example of a rare model, and a commendable labour of love to have rebuilt the car to its original form. Without doubt it would make a very practical and usable touring car for Bentley Driver's Club events and the like, and would be welcome anywhere.Specification Make: BENTLEY Model: 4 LITRE Year: 1931 Chassis Number: VF 4011 Registration Number: GT 1094 Transmission: Manual Engine Number: VF4016 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Make: RHD Interior Colour: Burgundy leatherClick here for more details and images
