AN UNUSUAL CHARLES II NEEDLEWORK PANEL CIRCA 1660-1680 With raised work and embroidered silks with mica and seed pearl detailing, depicting figures standing around a gallows with hanged man, later framed and glazed panel 14 by 27cm, frame 19 by 32.2cm Provenance: Christie's, South Kensington, Costume And Textiles including the John Parry Collection, 12 March 2003, lot 131, where purchased by Robert Kime. The central hanged man is unusual for embroidered pictures of this era but does occur in contemporary needlework scenes of Esther and Ahasuerus where Haman is shown on the gallows. It may this picture is a simplified version of that subject. Condition Report: Wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. The whole with muted colours from sunlight exposure. The frame sealed but the panel looks to have been laid down on a textile backing prior to framing. Some surface rumpling, spot stains and uneven edges. Small area of loss to the right hand side of right figure's head. Faux tortoiseshell frame with losses. Condition Report: Overall there are some scratches, marks, knocks, cracks and abrasions consistent with age and use.There are some losses, restorations and observations including:There is a crack to the top and to one section of the central star.The parquetry border is missing some tesserae and has others filled with some paintwork.One of the upright sections of bone is missing and has been replaced with a cream painted section, presumably wood.The ebonised moulding under the top has some later pins and some rubbing to the ebonised finish, with some knocks.The detailed bobbin turnings make it difficult to spot chips, but some are chipped or cracked, with some small cracks to the fretwork bracket panels.There is some evidence of old worm.Please see the additional condition report photographs as a visual reference of condition. A Coalport dessert plate, circa 1891-1919of shaped, circular form with a moulded border, the cobalt and pale yellow ground with rich gilding and painted with a circular landscape panel of the medieval Castle Campbell (Scotland), printed factory mark to the reverse, titled, numbered 'X228Y', 24cm diameterProvenance: Ivor Southorn Collection.Provenance:Crazing to the glaze. The plate appears to have fired quite oddly and there is a luminescent, almost mother-of-pearl-like, sheen to the landscape panel. There are two inclusions visible to the panel under a bright light, but this also appears to be on manufacture rather than restoration.
