Late 18th Century Decorative Mother of Pearl Fan, By Repute From the Property of Empress Charlotte of Mexico with carved and pierced sticks and guards, carved central cartouche of figures seated in a pastoral landscape, painted in gold, silver and bronze, a hand painted paper mount depicting figures seated listening to a young girl playing a stringed instrument, and a ruined castle to the reverse, 27cm Provenance: with a copy of the original bill of sale between Antonio Del Conde and John Lassman, New York, 1919. Also a copy of a handwritten letter dated 1913 purporting the fan to have belonged to Empress Charlotte. Empress Charlotte (1840-1927) was the only daughter of Leopold I, King of Belgium (1790-1865). Charlotte married Archduke Maximilian of Austria and after Napoleon III and the French took over Mexico he was crowned and served as King, The Emperor of Mexico.
