AN EARLY JAPANESE NAMBAN CABINET FOR THE EXPORT MARKET MOMOYAMA PERIOD, C.1580-1620 Of rectangular form and with a hinged fall front opening to reveal nine drawers, the door and sides decorated with panels enclosing many fans embellished with bands of geometric designs and flowering branches of prunus, scrolling tendrils, and ume-bachi mon (family crests), in between borders of chevrons and other formal patterns, the decoration rendered in a multitude of raiden (mother of pearl) inlays and gold and black lacquer, the inside with further mother of pearl inlays and gilt decoration depicting panels of flowering prunus and peony, the copper fittings and side loop handles with designs of melons, flowers and tendrils, together with a key, 28cm x 37.5cm x 24cm. FIVE JAPANESE ARITA BLUE AND WHITE DISHES EDO PERIOD, 18TH CENTURY The foliate bodies decorated with fierce-looking dragons emerging from spiralling clouds, each mythological beast grasping a sacred pearl of wisdom, the dishes with brown edges and the undersides painted with further pearls of wisdom, each base with a stylised kin (gold) character, all approx. 20.2cm. A mother of pearl snuff box with 835 silver mount. On the lid a carved relief of an allegorical scene depicting a lady surrounded by trees and on her left, Cupid sitting on his quiver with an arrow in his hand. The box is surrounded by stylized leaf- and flower motifs and on the inside of the lid a small painting behind glass of presumably a husband drawing his sword to his wifes lover, Holland, third quarter 18th century. 3,2 x 6,6 x 5 cm.
A Victorian 19th century burr walnut inlaid ladies vanity box having inlay work to top in the form of a rose and fitted purple velvet interior with original contents of silver plated and glass vanity pots and mother of pearl handled items. Also having a pin release concealed compartment to the side. Together with a burr walnut writing slope desk tidy with original blue leather tooled gilt fitted interior. Measures 40cm x 27cm x 16cm. Condition A/F. Vanity box lid comes away - will need repair at hinge. Crack to the lid of the writing slope.
