A Pair of Chinese Cinnabar Bowls with Dragons , Late Qing dynasty early republic Depicting two celestial dragons chasing the flaming pearl among Ruyi shaped clouds. The bottom with a Qianlong six marks character in gold . 16,5 cm diameter . Comes with stands. Provenance : From the Estate of Alfred and Irene Morley and thence by descent to the current owner. Alfred ( Bob) Morley (1890-1971) was a British journalist and diplomat . He lived from 1915 till 1941 in Hongkong and Shanghai , He was editor for both the Hong-Kong Telegraph and the South China Morning Post , in 1931 He settled in Shanghai as Editor for the Shanghai Times. He was also president of the Rotary Club Shanghai. From March 1940 he was Press Attaché at the British embassy in Shanghai .Condition Report: Structurally sound, but some spots of missing lacquer and scratches on the inside of the bowls . A small chip near the rim of one bowl and a few cracks on the outside of the other one .
A Victorian papier mache table writing cabinet, work box in the manner of Jennens & Bettridge of Birmingham, with a moulded top inlaid with mother of pearl and painted with a scene of Warwick castle from the Avon opening to reveal a fitted needlework section. A 19th/20th century probably German (4/4) violin bearing an apocryphal paper label for Iofredus (Giofreddo?) Cappa, with two-piece back and satinwood and ebonized purfling with ebony pegs and fingerboard together with a Bausch copy (stamped) bow with mother of pearl and nickel silver inlaid fittings and another bow. Together with a similar violin and bow with a two-piece back both with fitted hard cases. 59 cm overall length, 37 cm length of back, the primary item.Please Note.The ivory tip plates have been removed from these violin bows to comply with the law governing the sale of ivory and although it may be present in the images that accompany this lot it has in fact now been removed. A set of four late 19th/early 20th century reverse carved intaglio buttons, each oval cabochon intaglio carved and painted to depict a sporting theme, comprising a jockey on racehorse, a huntsman on horseback, a duck amongst reeds and a fish, with mother of pearl backing, stamped '18', length 1.55cmSome of the intaglios have patchy brownish staining/residue to the back, most notably to the huntsman on horseback. Painted decoration is mostly crisply defined and the colours are fairly vibrant. Each of the intaglios has scuffs, nicks and light scratches to the surface of the cabochon. The mounts have general surface wear, chips and scuffs, with occasional dings and small areas of pitting. Each panel measures approx. 1.55cm length x 1.3cm width. Metal standard is untested. One of the marks is mis-struck. Combined gross weight approx. 9.5gm.
A diamond, pearl and enamel panel brooch, the circular panel centred with a cluster of graduated old and rose-cut diamonds in foiled closed-back settings, to a red and white guilloché enamel ground, within a pearl border, (pearls untested for origin, brooch fitting possibly later added), principal diamond weight approximately 0.15ct, diameter 2.4cmDiamonds are well matched and lively, occasional stones with small chips/fractures, with patchy discolouration to the foil backing. The enamel has surface wear, with scuffs, nicks and occasional shallow chips to the surface, but no apparent losses. The mount has larges areas of dark solder repair, running along the outer rim, at the junction of the sides to the back panel, with occasional small holes and splits to the sides. The back panel may be later added and the mount has general surface wear, chips and scuffs, with an area of staining to the back. The pearls have surface wear, blemishes, scuffs and occasional fractures, some of the pearls with irregular spacing to the border. The pin fitting currently functions but may be later added/replaced. Metal standard is untested. Gross weight approx. 8.3gm.
A late 19th century star ruby, diamond and pearl pendant, centred with an oval cabochon star ruby in claw setting, framed by entwined scrolls of graduated old and rose-cut diamonds, suspending a diamond and pearl drop and surmounted by a detachable diamond set bale, the reverse with vacant threaded aperture, gold and silver mounted, (pearl untested for origin), total weight of old-cut diamonds approximately 0.90ct, length 4.95cmThe star ruby has an opaque purplish-red hue with angular colour zoning and surface-reaching fractures/chips visible to the unaided eye. The cabochon has a double star effect and the main star is off-centre. Dimensions of ruby approx. 11.9mm length x 8.8mm width x 5.8mm depth. Diamonds have variable colour and clarity, some stones with chips/nicks and surface-reaching fractures, estimated SI1 to P1 clarity and I to L colour, assessed mounted. Old-cut diamonds graduate from approximately 0.10ct to 0.01ct in size. The pearl is untested for natural/cultured origin and has light surface wear with shallow blemishes, measuring approx. 6mm length x 4.5mm width. The mount is unmarked and has signs of general wear, chips and scuffs, with patchy thinning and tarnishing, and is missing a detachable fitting. Width of panel 2.6cm. Gross weight approx. 6.9gm.

A late 19th century Indian vari gem-set fringe necklace, designed as five strands of baroque seed pearls with green bead spacers, each suspending a fringe of faceted and cabochon-cut gemstones and coloured stones with pearl drops below, to include rubies, sapphires, emeralds, moonstones, coral corallium rubrum and turquoises, with vari gem-set terminals, the cushion-shaped cluster clasp with orange and white pastes in foiled closed-back settings, (pearls untested for origin), in fitted case signed 'PROCTER'S INDIAN ART GALLERY, 428, OXFORD ST, LONDON', shortest length 39cmThis lot is from the estate of Edward Alfred Alexander Baldwin (1938 - 2021). Edward was the grandson of Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin, and the fourth Earl Baldwin of Bewdley. Stanley Baldwin was from an extraordinary family: Rudyard Kipling was his first cousin, Edward Burne-Jones and Edward Poynter were both uncles, his mother Louisa was a novelist, and her siblings included the famous Macdonald sisters. Edward Baldwin was committed to rehabilitating his grandfather's reputation and, being an only child, spent much of his life as sole custodian of these family objects.All stones and pastes have surface wear, some stones with sizeable chips, fractures and deeper scuffs/scratches. All stones are untested for origin and use of treatments/enhancements. Most of the rubies and sapphires contain multiple inclusions such as feathers, fissures, crystals and angular colour zoning, some with surface-reaching fractures. The emeralds contain fissures, fractures and crystals, again with some surface-reaching fractures. Stones vary in colour and hue. Most of the seed pearls and blister pearls have blemishes, creases and scuffs, some with losses to the nacre surface. The paste clasp has patchy discolouration to the foiled backing, general wear to the mount, and a small split/crease to the tongue. The clasp is currently functioning. The clasp cluster measures approx. 22mm length x 20.3mm width. The woven fabric fittings have areas of possible glue residue to the ends and stringing to the strands is a little loose in places. Most of the collet settings either side of the clasp (to the triangular clusters) are dented and mis-shapen, with splits and creases. The other collet settings to the fringe strands have fewer dents and dings, with occasional creases and splits. The mounts are untested as gold/gilt metal/silver-gilt. The largest stone to the fringe is a cabochon ruby with a faint and off-centre star effect, measuring approx. 9.7mm length x 7.5mm width x 3.3mm depth. The longest strand measures approx. 52.5cm from end to end, including the clasp and woven fittings, the shortest measures approx. 39cm. Gross weight approx. 69gm. The case has general wear, patchy losses to the exterior finish and patchy light staining to the interior. The clasp is missing to the case and the cushion doesn't sit tightly to the base.

Dial is mostly pinkish, with subtle green and grey iridescence. Light scuffs and occasional nicks/chips to glass. Scuffs, scratches, nicks and chips to the case and bracelet, commensurate for use. There is a subtle shallow ding to one side of the case, near to the case back.The clasp is currently functioning and fairly tight fitting. The bracelet would suit a medium-sized wrist and measures approximately 17cm in length. There are no spare links included with this lot. The quartz movement currently runs but is untested for working order and time keeping, which cannot be guaranteed. General wear, scuffs and spotting to maker's case, signature to interior lining is worn. Case dimensions approx. 2.5cm length x 2cm width. Gross watch weight approx. 64gm.

Surface scuffs and nicks to cabochon, some occasional deeper scuffs, scratches and nicks to mount. Stamped mark to back of mount is worn, mount is untested for metal standard. The loop fitting is not soldered. The chain has considerable wear, dark solder repairs and some missing links, metal standard is untested. The clasp is currently functioning. Dimensions of pendant panel (excluding loop fitting) approx. 2.75cm length x 2.2cm width x 0.95cm depth. Approximate gross weights: pendant 10.2gm, chain 3.7gm.

Occasional half pearls may be later replaced. The pendant panels and chain have surface scuffs, scratches and chips/nicks, commensurate for use, and the clasp is currently functioning. Most of the connecting jump rings are not soldered. The necklace appears to be unmarked and gold standard is untested. Total length of pendant, from tip of upper flowerhead to base of lower flowerhead, approx. 3.9cm. Width of pendant section approx. 6cm. Gross weight approx. 8.8gm.
A Victorian turquoise, pearl and diamond brooch, centred with a pavé set boss of cabochon turquoises, within a border of alternating pearls and lasque-cut diamonds, (later fitting, pearls untested for origin, one diamond deficient), together with a pair of turquoise boss ear pendants, on wire fittings, stamped '9CT GOLD BACKS', brooch diameter 2.7cm, ear pendants length 2.7cm (2)Brooch: Most of the turquoise cabochons have patchy discolouration, chips/nicks, fractures, brownish veins and scuffs, and some of the cabochons are later replaced. One diamond is missing and the remaining diamonds are in fragment form, with uneven lasque-cut symmetry, chips and fractures. Pearls have surface wear, blemishes and scuffs, all are untested for origin. The mount has considerable wear, patchy tarnishing/staining, dark solder repairs and thinning to the settings. The brooch fitting is later added/replaced and currently functioning. Metal standard is untested. Gross weight approx. 9gm. Ear pendants: Most of the turquoise cabochons have patchy discolouration, chips/nicks, fractures, brownish veins and scuffs, and some of the cabochons may be later replaced. The mounts appear to be gilt metal, with general surface wear and patchy tarnishing. Stamped marks have patchy wear. Diameter of each boss 8.7mm. The wire fittings may be later replaced. Gross weight approx. 1.5gm.
