Fourteen various George III and later mother of pearl handled knives and forks SILVER COLLECTION OF SIR RAY TINDLE CBE DL 1926-2022 The following obituary (edited) was published by Tindle Newspapers: Sir Ray Tindle was a man who had a life-long commitment to, and passion for, the newspaper industry. He was a newspaper man through and through. After leaving school he enlisted in the 1st Battalion Devonshire Regiment and saw service in the Far East between 1944 and 1947, rising to the rank of captain. He was extremely proud of his association with the now-disbanded regiment and greatly mourned its passing, going so far as to name his previous home in Farnham Devonshire House in its honour.Sir Ray made the Surrey town his home in the 1960s and made such an impact in the following 50 years that he was known by locals as Mr Farnham. If a charity or organisation needed help, Sir Ray was there. He eventually stepped down as Chairman of Tindle Newspapers when he was 90, remaining as president, with son Owen, who runs the Oxon Hoath Retreat and Conference Centre in Kent, taking over as Chairman. After returning to the UK after the War,Sir Ray acquired his first newspaper title, the Tooting & Balham Gazette, with his £300 demob payment. It was to be the first of many and, over the years through a series of launches and acquisitions, the group grew to a considerable force under the collective banner of Tindle Newspapers Ltd. It now owns local papers and radio stations covering large parts of Surrey, Hampshire, Essex, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall, Wales, Ireland, the Channel Isles and the Isle of Man. Many of these papers are very long established, including the Monmouthshire Beacon founded in 1837.Others were launched in Queen Victorias reign, such as the Farnham Herald (1892), Cambrian News (1860), Cornish & Devon Post (1856), Mid-Devon Advertiser (1863) and the Tenby Observer (1853).The Tindle Group became the fourth largest UK local newspaper group by number of titles published.Sir Ray was a man of immense self-belief and iron determination, as characterised by his coat of arms, carried by all his newspapers, with the Latin motto Noli Cedere, which translates as Never Surrender. He retired as Chairman of the Surrey Advertiser in 1977 after 35 years. He was also a director for 18 years on the main board of The Guardian & Manchester Evening News, and Chairman for ten years of the Belfast News Letter, the UKs oldest provincial daily. He was a founder shareholder and, for many years, an alternate director, of Capital Radio. He became Master of the Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers in 1985 after some 20 years of service on several committees and of the Court.Over the years he also donated sizeable sums to various worthy causes and projects, particularly in and around his hometown of Farnham. In 1973 Sir Ray was appointed OBE for services to the newspaper industry and in 1987 he was appointed CBE. In 1989 he became a Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Surrey. He was knighted in 1994 andwas made the Newspaper Personality of the Year at the 2005 Newspaper Awards, in the same year becoming an honorary vice-president of the Veteran Car Club of Great Britain.Sir Ray died as he would have wished, still committed to the media empire he had so painstakingly created over the course of a long and distinguished career. He was an avid collector of silver, and his collection is being sold by the estate in this auction.

Höfische russische Kaminverkleidung der Epoche Katharina der GrossenHöhe: 135 cm. Breite: 223 cm. Tiefe: 31 cm.Russland.In weißem Marmor gestaltete elegante Kaminverkleidung. Minimal besch. (13300512) (2) (10)Courtly russian fireplace surround from the era of catherine the greatHeight: 135 cm.Width: 223 cm.Depth: 31 cm.Russia.Elegant fireplace surround in white marble. The surround is decorated with bright green, inlaid malachite panels, which are bordered by gilt bead and reel décor in marble. Each side panel inlaid with malachite, surmounted by five chased and gilt oval rosettes arranged one above the other and surmounted on a base. Lastly, set inside a narrow white marble circle at the centre, is a portrait of a lady to the right, her hair covered by a shawl and wearing a pearl necklace. As the portrait is placed in a prominent position, it could portray a lady of high rank. Comparisons with portraits of the Tsarina Catherine the Great (1729-1796) lead to the assumption that this could well be a portrait of the Tsarina in relief.

A very rare Meissen beaker and saucer, circa 1728Painted with blue monochrome chinoiserie scenes, each depicting a single figure flanked by flowering plants and fences, within a gilt quatrelobe scrollwork cartouches filled with Böttger lustre and edged with purple and iron-red scrolls, gilt scrollwork borders to the rims, three branches of indianische Blumen to the reverse of the saucer, similar sprigs to the sides of the beaker, the beaker: 7.5cm high, crossed swords marks in underglaze-blue (minor rubbing to saucer) (2)Footnotes:A teabowl and saucer with similar rare blue monochrome chinoiserie scenes from a different service is in the Wark Collection, see U. Pietsch, Early Meissen Porcelain The Wark Collection (2011), no. 111; another teabowl and saucer from the same service was in the Darmstädter Collection, sold by Lepke's Berlin 24-26 March 1925, lot 129.The figure on the saucer appears to be holding a Chinese puzzleball which serves as an incense burner, possibly a European interpretation of an Asian flaming pearl, seen frequently on Asian porcelain. It is likely that the shape was also in some way based on an ivory turned Contrefait Kugel, of which there were many examples kept in the Grünes Gewölbe in Dresden. The earliest written reference to a concentric ivory sphere appears in the late-fourteenth-century connoisseur Cao Zhao's 曹昭 Essential Criteria of Antiquities (Gegu yaolun 格古要論), parts of which were first published in 1388. In his text, Cao recalls seeing 'a hollow-centered ivory ball, which had two concentric balls inside it, both of which can revolve. It is a 'demon's ball' (guigongqiu 鬼功球), or one made by someone in the Inner Court of the Song dynasty' (original quote: 尝有象牙圆球一个,中直通一窍,内车二(数)重,皆可转动,故谓之鬼功球,或云宋内院中作者).
