Collection of Early 20th Century cufflinks to include a pair 9ct gold of flat oval head cufflinks engraved with the letter S (hallmarked London 1907), pair 9ct of foliate engraved examples (hallmarked 375), a pair of hexagonal head initial cufflinks (marked 9ct), two pairs of silver and enamel cufflinks and a selection of mother of pearl dress buttons.

LARGE BLUE AND WHITE 'DRAGON' BRUSH WASHER YONGZHENG MARK, 19TH-20TH CENTURY 十九至二十世紀 雍正款 青花雙龍搶珠大筆洗of cylindrical form, the straight side painted two five-clawed dragons chasing for a flaming pearl, the base inscribed with a six-character apocryphal Yongzheng mark in underglaze blue 25.6cm diameter Collection of Sir Alan Campbell, GCMG, thence by descent to his daughterThe diplomat Alan Campbell (later Sir Alan Campbell, 1919-2007) was the youngest son of Hugh Campbell, (1873-1943) silk merchant and Director of Ilbert & Co, Shanghai. In 1905 Hugh Campbell married Ethel Warren (1881-1951) daughter of HM Consul-General in Shanghai, Sir Pelham Warren (1845-1923). Alan Campbell, who inherited an interest in Chinese porcelain from his parents, probably acquired this dish in Beijing in 1956-57 during his time as Head of Chancery at the British Legation. His neighbour and colleague in the Legation was John Addis (later Sir John Addis KCMG, 1914-83, British Ambassador to China 1972-4), a collector and authority on Ming porcelain, who made important donations of ceramics and textiles to the British Museum and the V&A; Museum. Campbell’s memoir Colleagues and Friends, published in 1988, mentions shopping for antiquities in Wig Street and getting ‘sound advice’ from Addis.

A Chinese yellow-glazed bowl, Guangxu (1875-1908), the rounded sides rising from a circular foot to a flared rim, incised with two dragons amongst clouds chasing a flaming pearl, the interior with a shou character, a six-character Guangxu mark to base,10cm diameterProvenance: From Travers Christmas Humphreys QC (15 February 1901-13 April 1983) via his wife's will executor, her goddaughter, and thence by descent.Born in London in 1901, Humphreys followed in his father's footsteps to become a prominent barrister, and was responsible for the prosecution of several controversial cases during the 1940s and 50s, before later becoming a judge at the Old Bailey. A proponent of Buddhism, he wrote a number of works on Mahayana Buddhism, and was probably the best-known British convert of his day. In 1924, he founded what became the London Buddhist Society, which was to have a seminal influence on the growth of the Buddhist tradition in Britain. He was also an enthusiastic advocate of the Oxfordian theory that the works of Shakespeare were, in fact, written by someone else.
