Islamic Art. A pair of luxuriant woman’s mother-of-pearl inlaid wooden hammam clogs (Qabqab) with floral embossed silver mounts Ottoman Turkey, 19th century . Pair of extraordinary high stilted clogs, each comprising two platforms, a sole and an upper strap of embossed silver sheet decorated with pearls and floral motifs. Both show several mother-of-pearl inlays arranged in chevrons and geometric patterns housed within silver wire. Hammam shoes such this one were meant for wealthy women in order to let them walking above a wet and dirty floor. Their use however, implied the assistance of a servant and, for particularly hight specimen such as this one, more servants. This is the reason why they became a status symbol. Thier Arabic name is onomatopoeic, coming from the sound that the clogs make hiting the floor. A pair of similarly high. although less inlaid clogs is treasured at the British Museum (Inv.
