A Chinese shaded gold-thread court dragon robe, jifu, Qing Dynasty, 19th century, circa 1850, worn by a mandarin of the court who by repute became a merchant for trade in Indonesia, nine, five-clawed dragons adorn the robe chasing the pearl of wisdom amongst clouds and auspicious symbols of good fortune,189cm x 135cm These robes were worn at official ceremonies in various palace temples including the temple of heaven. Provenance: By repute given by a merchant as a gift to Johan Hagemeijer in 1914, staying in the same family by descent. Johan was a charitable man, and a Chinese merchant gave the robe to him as a thank you before he and his family returned to the Netherlands. The Dutch family owned a trading company which began with offices in Surabaya in the Dutch East Indies, then expanded into Jakarta, Semarang, Kuala Lumpa, Singapore and Penang. A Chinese circular gilt-bronze 'Dragon' box and cover, the cover with two dragons chasing the flaming pearl amongst clouds, the side of the lid with ruyi heads and the sides of the base with running animals amongst scrolling foliage, 15cm diameter and a Chinese 'Court' necklace, chao zhu, with 108 wood beads divided by four glass fotou beads (2) 木朝珠(带鎏金铜盒)
A Chinese Kesi weave Dragon robe, Jifu, Qing Dynasty, circa 1850, woven with nine five-clawed dragons, the lower dragons clasp the pearl of wisdom indicating the robe was worn by a high rank noble mandarin, the ground is decorated with a Wan trellis pattern and with large bat symbols of happiness fly among the clouds. Many symbols are delicately painted with shaded details. The robe is originally tailored with matching collar edgings sleeve insets and cuffs. Lined with blue silk. A Chinese Imperial chestnut silk-ground embroidered dragon robe, Jifu, worn by a high rank prince of the court of Daoguang, circa 1820-40, softly shaded vegetable dyed embroidered slender coral yellow and blue clouds are interspersed with lively coral coloured bats, the nine five-clawed dragons embroidered in fine gold thread of which seven clasp the pearl of wisdom, the tall central mountains of the four directions are surrounded by the billowing waves in the lishui water and wave pattern at the hem line, original neck bands extenders and horse shoe dragon cuffs decorate the robe lined with the original pale blue silk damask woven with flowers, 144cm hem to collar x 215cm cuff to cuff Provenance: From the collection of a Gentleman acquired in Clifton, Bristol, in the 1970's The pearl of wisdom was a symbol only allowed to be worn by the close circle of the Emperor in the direct royal blood line.
