The first leg of their passage to Calcutta in 1785 was made on the Indiaman Atlas, which left them at Whampoa in August 1785. They remained in China, visiting Macao and Canton, before taking a coasting vessel to Calcutta in the spring of 1786. They returned to China after their famous tour on India, visiting Canton from September 1793 until March 1794. The current work is an addition to the few extant pictures of Chinese subjects by Thomas Daniell listed by Shellim (India and the Daniells: Additional Oil paintings, London, 1988).Condition Report: Canvas is unlined. Surface dirt and a reddish discolouration of the varnish. Very fine craquelure throughout the surface of the canvas as well as a few areas of star shaped craquelure mainly in the central hill. A vertical line of cracking paint (approx. 12 cm in length) in the sky on the right. Some abrasions around the edges from contact with the frame. W. Bacon & Co. Ltd., each map sheet 170 x 220 mm, if conjoined 1320 x 220 mm, gutta-percha perished, contents shaken and loose, publisher's red cloth boards, binding size 175 x 120 mm, together with John Bartholomew & Co. (publisher). The Autocar Map for Motorists, published from the Autocar offices by Iliffe & Sons Ltd. circa 1925, colour printed map, sectionalised and laid on linen, 1355 x 1115 mm, publisher's colour printed endpapers, contained in a contemporary cloth slipcase with colour printed labels to both covers, with Ordnance Survey. A Georgian memorial gem-set and half pearl locketdesigned as a yellow gold two handled urn set with calibré-cut emeralds, a garnet-set surmount and base, the closed back reverse with hinged compartment (a/f), contemporary ovoid shaped red leather case, together with a later fine trace link chain stamped '9K' locket: 2,2 cm x 1.8 cm, 2.0 g; chain 1.2gCondition: The mount has a few knocks and is not in perfect condition. First hand inspection suggested.The rock crystal to the reverse of the locket has a fracture running across the bottom section with a loss to the bottom right corner and has a flaked chip to the centre (obverse rock crystal appear to be in good order) .Stones untested , reasonably bright and probably foiled as in closed back setting. Upper smaller garnet in loop damaged .
