A Canton export folding fan, the ivory guards carved with a floral motif, the sticks shaped and pierced, with mother of pearl edged rivet and a shaped metal loop supporting a knotted double tassel, the silk leaf with machine embroidered dragon in pastel colours, guard length 18.5cm, width approx 29cm, in a lacquered box decorated in gilt with bird amongst blossoms and with a painted fabric interior. CONDITION REPORT: The rear guard and stick next to it are broken, the leaf is in good condition as is the front stick, the hinges to the box are broken.

Lot 131

A possibly Canton export early 19th century folding fan with carved ivory guards, pierced and shaped sticks forming cartouches and mother of pearl edged rivet, the paper mount printed and overpainted with a scene of ladies encountering a gentleman who has arrived by boat, in the European taste, with writing in pencil verso (possibly suggesting what the figures are saying), guard length 26.5cm, width approx 42cm, in a box with pull top. CONDITION REPORT: Front guard has been sympathetically reinforced, some wear to folds, paper stuck to one of the sticks, otherwise in good condition. Box in good condition.

An 18th century folding fan with plain ivory guards and sticks with mother of pearl edged rivet, the mount printed and overpainted in the Oriental style with figures and buildings in a landscape and with metallic and mother of pearl embellishments, with a simple painted flower verso, guard length 28cm, width approx 42cm. CONDITION REPORT: A little tearing to mount and some discolouration on the folds.

Lot 143

A late 18th century folding fan with pierced and silver inlaid mother of pearl guards, and silver inlaid sticks, the leaf hand-painted with maidens and warriors in a large central cartouche, with small oval vignettes either side with a cornucopia and a basket beehive, with a small basket painted in sepia verso, guard length 27.5cm, width approx 49cm. CONDITION REPORT: There is no rivet. Sticks have become wrongly attached but all seem to be present. The leaf is discoloured, split in places, crudely repaired to the edge and abraded. In a delicate condition.

A European early 19th century folding fan with pierced and gilt decorated guards with mother of pearl heads, matching sticks forming cartouches and a green paste rivet, the possibly "chicken skin" leaf painted with a scene of classical figures by a riverside, surrounded by gilt heightened flowers, painted verso with floral motifs with gilt foliate border, guard length 26.5cm, width approx 47cm. CONDITION REPORT: Old reinforcement repairs have been done to the folds and the edge, there is still some wear to the folds but overall in good condition.

A early 19th century European folding fan with pierced shaped and metal inlaid bone guards and matching sticks with mother of pearl edged rivet and shaped gilt metal loop suspending a tassel, the paper double mount printed and overpainted with a scene of figures and a putto, the print signed with a monogram "EP" and edged with gilt heightened floral motifs, with painted river scene and floral sprays verso, with remnants of a feather edging, guard length 26cm, width approx 50cm. CONDITION REPORT: A small part of the paper mount is torn but present, the feather edging has been reduced to remnants, the last stick is supported by the rear guard and the two tied together, some wear to folds.

An early 19th century French folding fan, the mother of pearl shaped pierced guards inlaid with silver and gilt metal and decorated with cherubs with matching sticks forming a cherub cartouche with clear faceted paste rivet, the paper mount hand decorated allover with a pastoral scene with figures in the 18th century style with gilt heightened painted scrolls with small vignettes of items from country pursuits to the corners, guard length 26cm, width approx 50cm, framed and glazed. CONDITION REPORT: We have not removed the fan from the frame. Looks in good condition, very little wear to folds, painting in good condition. Guards and sticks look to be intact. Postage cost to a UK address will be approx £22.50 plus VAT.

An early 19th century folding fan with plain mother of pearl guards and sticks with pierced bone slips and gilt metal loop, with leaf of cream netted lace decorated with flowers, foliage and five butterflies, guard length 24cm, width approx 42cm, in box marked "M Jesurum & Comp, Manufacturers Venice". CONDITION REPORT: Four of the slips have broken and have been sewn together taking in the leaf however the lace seems to be in good condition although coming away from the front guard stick a little. Guards and sticks in good condition.

An early 19th century French folding fan with shaped, carved and pierced bone guards set with studs, with matching sticks, with mother of pearl rivet and metal loop, the silk leaf hand painted with figures in a shaped cartouche flanked by floral motifs with lace insets, guard length 23cm, width approx 42cm, boxed, and another example with pale blue stained paste set guards with sticks set with spangles, with metal loop, the leaf of pale blue cut silk with net insets decorated with motifs in sequins, guard length 21.5cm, width approx 34cm, boxed, plus a third example with florally decorated bone guards, with matching sticks and gilt shaped metal loop, the silk leaf with large central cartouche of figures in a landscape, contained with in a decorated and sequinned scroll, with floral patterns either side, guard length 21.5cm, width approx 40cm (af), and a faux tortoiseshell handled single dyed purple ostrich feather fan, length 69cm, and a further quantity of dyed ostrich feathers to decorate fashion accessories. CONDITION REPORT: The French fan has a split to the middle and further wear on the folds. The lace inserts appear to be intact, some discolouring, some losses to the studding on the guards and sticks. The pale blue fan has a broken front guard, rest of it appears to be in good condition. The third fan has a hole across the cartouche and wear to the folds, plus some foxing. The ostrich feathers have been used but are in fairly good condition.

An English mid 19th century folding fan with pierced and inlaid mother of pearl guards and matching sticks with flower shaped gilt metal rivet, the double sided possibly "chicken skin" mount printed and overpainted with a figural scene by a river, with gilt heightened border, with a printed and overpainted figural river scene verso flanked by two gilt heightened posy motifs, guard length 22cm, width approx 40cm. CONDITION REPORT: In good condition with very little wear to the folds, slight tearing on the second stick.

CONDITION REPORT: Some wear to folds, a little loss to the paint, paper repair verso and some staining, both guards have been broken and repaired otherwise in good condition.

CONDITION REPORT: A break to the front stick has been mended, some of the metallic studs are missing, some wear to the folds, a little foxing, generally good condition.

A late 19th century French folding fan with plain mother of pearl guards and sticks, the rivet set with a clear paste, and suspending a loop, the silk mount painted with a small fairy, possibly crying over spilt milk in a naturalistic setting, signed "Jo Livet", guard length 32.5cm, width approx 61cm. CONDITION REPORT: The mother of pearl is in good condition. The folds of the fan have had some damage with blue ink and a fair amount of wear, and a little foxing. The painting is generally in quite good order.

CONDITION REPORT: One of the sticks is broken. Painting is in good condition with a little glue residue. Otherwise good condition.

CONDITION REPORT: The front guard stick has been repaired, otherwise good condition. The print is intact with only a little rubbing to the folds and only a little foxing.

CONDITION REPORT: Some wear to folds, glue residue to the left end. Other wise good condition.

CONDITION REPORT: The front guard has been crudely repaired with glue residue apparent. There is a little staining to the lace. The slips have been mended where they have come away from the sticks, a little staining to the fan box.

CONDITION REPORT: The rear guard of the lace fan is broken, some of the slips are broken. The studded fan has some studs missing and one of the sticks is broken.

A 19th century Canton export brisé fan, the ivory guards finely carved with a floral motif and a scene of buildings at the end, the sticks pierced to form variously shaped panels all with different piercing centring on a shield shaped cartouche with a scene of buildings and trees, each stick having a decorative roundel to its end, with a mother of pearl edged rivet, guard length 27cm, width approx 40cm (one stick af). CONDITION REPORT: One stick is broken, both ends are present but a central section of this stick is missing. Very few other losses, mostly good condition. The ribbon needs adjusting.

CONDITION REPORT: Good condition, very slight glue residue around ribbon, one stick reinforced verso, a little wear to paint decoration.
