The next morning, February 7, an English East Indiaman captained by James Pearl, passing through the same waters, encountered debris and some survivors and managed to rescue about 190 of the latter. 417 grams, 19cm (7 1/2"). Private collection, North London, UK. Fine condition.

Born in 1922 in Philadelphia, Walter has had a life-long passion for collecting. A long-time resident in London, he has now retired to New York and decided that the time has come to pass on the antiquities and coins he has collected over his lifetime. Walter acquired coins and artefacts that interested him, so his collection, although containing many lovely examples, also contains many affordable specimens. Much of the material has been unavailable to the market for 30 to 50 years. Walter hopes that the items he collected will now find new homes with the next generation of collectors. 2.39 grams. 565-578 AD. Unofficially struck from the dies for a gold tremissis (from stolen dies?), Constantinople mint. Obv: DN IVSTI-NVS PP AVG legend with pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev: VICTORIA AVGVSTORVM legend with Victory advancing right, head left, holding wreath and cross on globe, star in right field; mintmark CONOB in exergue. Cf. DO 13-14; Sear 353 (gold tremissis); not an official issue, struck possibly using stolen dies. See Wildwinds.com (this coin). An interesting coin with the wide flan around the edge typical of a tremissis; in addition the mintmark CONOB shows that the dies were planned for a gold coin, not silver (CON = Constantinopolis or its weight standard, OB = obryzum = refined or pure gold) and was never used on silver coins. Worthy of further research. 1.20 grams. [No Reserve] Very fine. Very rare and interesting.
