A mid nineteenth century English concertina with rosewood fretworked ends decorated with mother of pearl inlay, 48 metal keys and five fold green leather bellows, labelled Simpson, 266 Regent St, London, Improved Concertina, reg no. 1749 in later fibre carry case, thought to be a Wheatstone model, see note. John Simpson was at the label's address between 1830-1869 and appears many times in the earliest of Wheatstone records. It seems he stopped buying from them between Spring 1848 and January 1851, it is not clear that he ever actually manufactured his own instruments or as it is often the case continued to buy from Wheatstone's and 're-badged' them with his own labels or commissioned some of the many ex-Wheatstone's makers active in London at the time to create a Simpson branded model for sale in his music emporia.
