Durham  SALEROOM NOTICEThis chest is not Charles II in date but incorporates 17th century and later elements. Condition Report: The catalogue description for this lot should read:AN OAK, FRUITWOOD, EBONISED AND MOTHER OF PEARL CHESTINCORPORATING 17TH CENTURY AND LATER ELEMENTSThere are some marks, scratches, knocks, chips, splits and abrasions consistent with age and use.The top with some cracks along the joints.Features pointing to this chest incorporating 17th century elements and later include but not exclusively elements including mouldings, handles and sections of various dates, some mother-of-pearl inlay; some later painting to the centre of the inlaid roundels; there are rectangular patches to each side of the base and to one of the interior drawers; the metal hinges later to the doors; vacant hinge areas, the end sections of the doors; a recess cut to the division between the inner doors to accommodate the depth of the lock; spliced front feet; the lower moulding to the front only etc.There is one key for the later lock to the doors to the base. There is no key for the drawer, the lock is open.
