A pair of Italian carved mother of pearl shells, 19th century, each carved with a scene to include Christ in the manger and St Giorgio dispensing of the dragon. 12.7 cm and 13 cm diameter respectively. CONDITION REPORT: The shell depicting Christ in a manger has a small chip to the rim at bottom centre. Otherwise the shell is free from any further obvious faults. The shell depicting St. George has a small chip to the left hand side rim (9 o'clock). There is a further small chip mostly to the underside of the rim located around 6 o'clock. There is a small fleabite to the rim on the extreme side which is not notable when looking directly at the carved face. There are no obvious cracks to either shell. An Italian full size violin, with label for Bennettini, via S Giovanni alla Conca, 45 Milano, inscribed 1889, with purfling front and verso, the tailpiece with applied embossed brass lyre and with two piece back, 60 cm overall, and a full length bow, unmarked, frog inlaid with mother of pearl and within a fitted case.
An English full size violin, with interior printed and ink inscribed label for Thomas Earle Hesketh, Manchester Fecit 1904, with initials within a circle, an ink inscribed label "copy of a Joseph Guarnerius owned by Adolf Brodsky", with well figured two piece back, 58.5 cm overall, together with a 74.7 cm bow, unmarked but mounted in nickel and mother of pearl, all within a fitted case (see illustration).
A Japanese antimony charger, circa 1900, relief moulded with a Samurai Kyudoka before a long procession of figures, some of which holding aloft a large Bonsho, bronze patination heightened with gilding, the borders modelled as two dragons and a central pearl. Diameter 31 cm. CONDITION REPORT: There is a 5 cm split on the right hand edge (approximately 4 o'clock on a clock face). On the left hand edge (just above 9 o'clock) there is a small piece of dragon whisker missing. There is slight discolouration on the outer edges and the gilding is rubbed on the dragons horns. There is some gilding missing on the dragons whiskers on both the top and bottom. In areas around the edge some of the patination has erased and now shows the base metal. On further inspection it appears that the dragons around the edge have been gilded at one point but the majority of this has now been erased. The uppermost pagoda is partially gilded and the centre section is rubbed.
A chinoiserie lacquered Carlton house style desk, decorated in relief with Chinese figures and painted with lilies and birds, fitted with three frieze drawers and raised on tapered legs of square section. Width 126 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The desk is structurally sound and in generally very good order. There are some minor nibbles to the gilt paintwork around the extremities but other that this the condition is extremely good. We can see no evidence of any damage. There are no repairs. All of the mother of pearl and hardstone appears to be present. There are some minor nibbles to the lacquer on the legs but again these are really inconsequential.
A Chinese green and aubergine dragon bowl, six character Kangxi mark within two blue circles, probably of the period (1662-1722), decorated with two dragons chasing a pearl amongst clouds above a band of rockwork and waves, upon a turned wood stand. Bowl diameter 11 cm, height 5.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: This bowl has been broken in three places. One large D shape has had a further break and there is a further larger break with a rim to almost foot rim hairline crack. On the larger break the right hand side crack from the rim veers off to the left but also a very fine crack veers off to the right at approximately 1.5 cm in length. The broken pieces have been glued at one point although the large crack is held together by five very small metal rivets.
Chinese ceramics 18th/19th century, comprising a flared petal shaped cup, finely painted with birds amongst blossoming flowers and rockwork, a pair of Dehua Blanc de Chine cups with applied relief blossoming prunus sprigs, a pair of 18th century saucers, a yellow ground dragon plate with Fuku, an octagonal yellow ground dish, a Famille Rose jug, a circular celadon dish and a tea bowl (10). CONDITION REPORT: Both Blanc de Chine cups have kiln dirt within the glaze and both have brown oxide tips to the applied sprigs, one more so than the other. One cup also has two large hairline cracks and an 8 mm x 2 mm interior rim chip. The flared rim Famille Rose cup has a rim to foot rim hairline crack. There is a small chip to the rim just above the handle. There is a small section of the blue enamel within the rockwork missing but the decoration is very good. The tea bowl has a rim to almost foot rim hairline crack and a further 1.5 cm hairline crack and a 3 cm V shape crack. The jug is missing its cover. The spout has been restored. There is a lot of fritting to the handle. There is a small scratch to the right of the handle around the rim which has been restored. The Celadon dish has a few small nibbles to the rim but no obvious cracks. The octagonal yellow ground plate is missing some of the yellow ground within the main field and there is also rub marks within the main field of decoration. It rings out nicely when lightly tapped and there are no obvious chips or cracks. One saucer has two small rim chips from which issue a 1 cm and 1.5 cm hairline crack. The other saucer is in good order with no obvious faults. The yellow ground dragon plate has four small sections of green enamel missing from the dragon and cloud. The red trail around the pearl is erased and rubbed. There is a small patch of white on the yellow ground. The rim is free from any chips, cracks or repairs.
Two octagonal Eastern bone and inlaid mother of pearl occasional tables. Widest 48 cm, tallest 62 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The lighter coloured table has some losses to the bone and mother of pearl. The centre marble panel is in good condition. Four of the eight sections of frame surrounding the marble top are intact. The other four all have segments of bone and mother of pearl missing. There are eight small pieces missing. The eight sides supports are in generally good order with only one lost segment of mother of pearl. The half round moulding between each side support is fully intact on six of the corners however the other two have sections missing. There are approximately 22 cm of this beaded edge missing. The feet are in generally good condition. The top of the smaller table is in good order with no losses to the mother of pearl. There are some minor scratches and marks but no significant issues. The eight table supports are in generally good condition with no losses to the inlay or mother of pearl other than very minor nibbles around the bottom edges of each support. There are some traces of old woodworm to the side panels which in our opinion is long gone.
A pair of Chinese crackle ware vases, late 19th century, each decorated with a pair of relief dragons chasing a pearl and with blossoming prunus branch handles, four character pseudo Chenghua incised mark. Height 44 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The top of one vase has been broken and glued in numerous places leaving rim chips, interior glaze chips and losses. The remainder of the vase is in good order. Its companion vase has a small fingernail size chip to the exterior of the rim. Otherwise the remainder of the vase is in good decorative order.
A Chinese dragon bowl, 19th century, the dragons in green and black chasing a pearl amongst clouds between sinuous lotus flower and Ruyi head borders, with six character Guangxu mark and applied Collectors Inventory No. 159, and a red dragon bowl, 19th century, the dragons facing a pearl amongst clouds against a yellow ground, with four character Qianlong mark and applied collectors inventory No. 157. Diameters 10 cm and 13.5 cm respectively.
