A good quality WW1 Battle of the Somme era, Verniers pattern officers MKVII marching compass, complete with original polished leather case. Manufactured with a blackened brass hinged lid, with large viewing window. Mother of pearl dial, with working stop button to the side. Blackened brass to the underside, with stamped broad arrow mark, and dated 1916. Manufacturers name of Cruchon & Emons, London to the bottom. The leather case is embossed with the makers mark for ‘Martins Birmingham’ and also dated 1916. There is also a lightly hand embossed name in the leather of the case, but this is difficult to read, but appears to be ‘A G Fuire’. Condition: very good. Cosmetically very good for its age and use, with much of the blackened brass finish remaining. Intact glass, and a good quality intact mother of pearl dial. Some very minor paint loss to the black painted central part of the dial. Very good colour and patina to the leather from use and handling. Working retention strap and buckle.
