Of Ian Fleming interest: A pair of cultured pearl set cufflinks, each circular panel with radial decoration, centred with a cultured pearl accent, the panels verso inscribed 'WUS', 'SIL', 'UDH' and 'NUF', with swivel clasp fittings, two colour precious metal mounted, panel diameter 1.4cmBy repute, these cufflinks were formerly the property of Ian Lancaster Fleming (28 May 1908 - 12 August 1964), the British writer, journalist, naval intelligence officer and author of the James Bond series of fictional spy novels. Fleming's service in the Naval Intelligence Division during the Second World War and his experiences as a journalist inspired much of his writing for the character of James Bond, an officer in the Secret Intelligence Service, introduced in the 1952 novel Casino Royale, whose success spawned eleven further novels, two collections of short stories and adaptations for film, television and radio. It is thought that these cufflinks were worn by Fleming to the Dr. No post film screening party in 1962. The groups of letters inscribed to the back of them are believed to represent a code, which is apparently yet to be solved. Thence by family descent. Condition report: Surface wear, nicks/chips and scuffs to the panels and fittings, commensurate for use. One of the fittings has a grey solder repair to the base of the swivel clasp. This swivel clasp has a slightly larger sprung section but both swivel clasps are the same length. Two of the cultured pearls have traces of glue residue at the junctions with the panels, and may be later replaced. All of the cultured pearls have light surface wear, scuffs and nicks. The jump rings attached to the base of the panels appear to have stamped marks, but these marks are heavily worn and illegible. Metal standard is unknown. Gross weight approx. 10.5gm.

The garnets are well matched, with deep purplish-red hues, but may have a coloured foil backing to enhance their colour. The garnets measure approximately 1.6cm to 1.8cm in length x 1cm to 1.1cm in width. The half pearls have patchy greyish discolouration, many with blemishes/ripples and degradation to the nacre surface. The bracelet settings have dings, shallow dents, chips and scuffs to the backs and sides, and the settings and clasp have surface scuffs/scratches. The edges of the settings have patchy thinning. Some of the rivets between the settings are later replaced. The clasp is a little loose fitting but currently functioning. The stones may be a combination of natural and synthetic stones and pastes, but are too small to test. Some of the half pearls have discoloured to greyish hues. Heavy wear to setting, small holes and areas of pitting to mount. Pendant loop is later added, evidence of a previous setting to back of panel that has been removed. The repair is not satisfactory, as a section of the panel is split and the necklace does not sit flat at this point, requiring further attention. The necklace mounts otherwise has surface wear, scuffs, chips and nicks throughout, with patchy tarnishing and some thinning to the edges of the settings. Further greyish solder joins/repairs are visible at junctions within the mounts. One of the connecting jump rings, between two of the foliate panels, requires repair. Dimensions of cartouche panel approx. 3.3mm width x 4.3mm length (including pearl drop).Diamonds have variable colour and clarity, some stones drawing yellowish tints or with chips/fractures, but give an overall bright and lively appearance, with estimated VS2 to P2 clarity and H to M colour, assessed mounted.
