Lot 2002

A Mid-18th Century Bone Fan, the monture very simple with only some shaping to the upper guards. The double paper leaf is painted with a border which resembles a fabric design, in a bright blue with sloping white stripes and bunches of roses at regular intervals. The roses continue into the central panel which features a young couple dressed in fine 18th century costume, making flower garlands. The scene is surrounded by an unusual background of a shimmering gold, created by the application of glitter or crushed and ground mother-of-pearl, this area being further decorated with flower sprays. The verso is painted with a single flower. Guard length 10.75 inches or 27.5cmGenerally sound. The flower sprays on the gold background are flaking, brown, perhaps oxidised.

Lot 2026

A Fine Mid-18th Century Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture heavily gilded, the carved gorge backed with thin mother-of-pearl. The leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, shows Cupid with other winged cherubs alongside Hera and her peacock, Athena with her weapons of shield and spear, and Aphrodite, two white doves in flight behind them. The verso shows a solitary lady holding a posy of flowers. Together with a shaped fan box covered in green leather with detail on the lid and side catches. Guard length 11.25 inches or 28.5cm (2) Purchased at Sotheby's Belgravia on the 6th of September 1979 for £128.00.Part of one rib is missing. The box has some loss to the covering notably underneath.

Lot 2014

A Circa 1760's Ivory Fan, the monture pierced, gilded and attractively painted, the gorge with bright turquoise, softer green and touches of other colours, serving to draw the eye to the carved cherubs and bowls of fruit in the centre. The gorge is further decorated with tiny iridescent shapes and parts are backed with thin mother-of-pearl. The head is well shaped, seen when open. The double paper leaf is painted with a rather imaginative garden, formed with arbours and statues. A makeshift tent provides shade whilst several activities are undertaken. A lady with a parasol holds a doll puppet; a lady wearing a laced stomacher is fanned by the gentleman who admires her; another gentleman attempts to purchase flowers from a maid who appears to have obtained his tricorn hat, in front of a shell fountain and a dolphin statue. And to the left, a servant prepares to bring liquid refreshment on a tray. The verso, the reserves painted with exotic flowers, shows two country boys playing bowls. Guard length10.5 inches or 26.5cm Purchased at Christie's SK on October 23rd 1979.The paint is almost rubbed away on the upper guards. Some rubbing to the folds. Backing MOP has losses.

Lot 2068

An Attractive and Highly Gilded Mid-19th Century Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the deep gorge in the Spanish style showing three ladies in voluminous skirts and a gentleman in breeches, detail emphasized by differing shades of gold, and backed by thin white mother-of-pearl. To the sides, and on the guards, some piercing producing flowers and scrolling, which is picked out in blue and pink and green, giving a light and airy touch amongst the strong gilding. The narrow lithographed leaf shows a musical gathering in the garden, the ladies wearing sack back robes and one holding an open fan, another reading. The verso is finished in stronger colours and shows three women and one man gathering flowers or herbs, all wearing berets with a touch of tartan braid, the man with a kilt and sporran made from an animal's mask. The fan opens to a full half circle. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cmA vibrant fan with strong colour to both monture and leaf, some wear to the folds. Monture in very good order.

Coronation of King George V and Queen Mary, June 22nd 1911: A Dainty Sequin Fan, the monture of white mother of pearl, lightly clouté, the double leaf of cream gauze with some blue/grey overlay in places, the whole embroidered with sequins of differing shapes. Guard length 8 inches or 20cm. Together with a card fan box bearing the motto of the Grosvenor Hotel Victoria, London, a lion bearing a standard with the initial ''G'', and the indication that it was to commemorate the Coronation in 1911. The lid interior is stamped ''Mappin and Webb, Oxford street, London''Repairs to both guards.

A Brussels Mixed Lace Fan, circa 1890's, the monture of carved and gilded pink mother-of-pearl. The leaf, worked with mainly bobbin lace, features a central cartouche of Brussels needlelace in a floral/rose design with raised petals. Contained in a card Duvelleroy fan box covered in red silk. Guard length 12.25 inches or 31cm Purchased at Christie's on March 23rd 1978.

Lot 2066

A Gothic Revival Fan, the leaf mounted on white mother-of-pearl, the monture possibly older than the hand coloured lithographed leaf. The recto shows a medieval hawking expedition, leaving and returning to a castle, with horse, dogs, handlers, and a lady and her Knight. Smaller vignettes show the bird handler with a colourful bird, and in the reserves six monks stand beneath stylised buildings with spiked architectural detail. The verso, with a central cartouche showing a musician playing to a lady seated in a throne, has reserves in gold featuring figures from the Commedia dell'arte, dancing on pillars. A monogram signature is visible, ''AE''. Guard length 10.75 inches or 27.5cm

A Large Circa 1890's Pink Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture carved and pierced, gilded and silvered. The double silk leaf, with black ground, is painted with a game of blindfold in the grounds of a country house, one gentleman in fine 18th century costume clutching the waist of a serving maid, another bewigged gentleman observing, whilst an elegant lady in pink observes from a distance and a male servant hides behind a bush. Signed Morjaret (?). Guard length 12.75 inches or 32.5cm. Together with Two Further Large Fans, one of ruby silk satin painted boldly with a magpie, the double leaf backed with black silk and mounted onto black wooden sticks, 19th century. Guard length 15 inches or 38cm; and the third fan a later and lighter fan with a wooden monture painted in pale pink with silver detail, the pink gauze leaf bordered with pink machine lace, the central feature painted with a young lady strolling by a riverbank and reading a book. Guard length 14 inches or 35.5cm (3)The lower guard of the mother of pearl fan is broken in the upper section. Slight rubbing to the paint on the recto. Slight split noted to one inner fold. The black backing on the magpie fan is lacking a thin section to the verso at one side, and the pink gauze on the third fan has been reinforced across three folds from behind.

An Early 20th Century Mid Green/Pink Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the shell with attractive shading, mounted with a gauze leaf overlaid with green silk, highly embellished with green and gold sequins. The recto is balanced with four vignettes, the ones to the sides featuring buildings, those remaining featuring a gentleman playing music and a lady dancing. Guard length 7.5 inches or 19cm. Together with A Large Late 19th Century Pink Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture gilded and silvered, the leaf of black gauze applied with machine lace, painted with delicate flowers and foliage and two small birds. Contained in a cream card fan box. Guard length 13.75 inches or 35cm (3)Green MOP: The upper guard has broken at the rivet, both sections appear present. The silk is rubbed on the folds. Pink MOP and box: in good order.

An Early 20th Century Pink Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture carved, pierced and gilded, the double paper leaf showing ladies seated in a garden listening to a child playing a flute. Both ladies, in 18th century dress, are holding fans, one open. Signed Zabaro……. probably Gabrielle Zaborowska. The verso is plain. Contained in a card fan box covered in cream and brown coloured paper. Guard length 8.5 inches or 21.5cGood. Shiny MOP, good colour to the leaf. The box is slightly scuffed.

A Late 19th Century Early 20th Century Light and Airy Cream Gauze Fan, the cream leaf edged and further embellished with white machine lace, flowers painted at random and highlighted with sequins. The pink mother of pearl monture is unadorned. The verso is plain. Together with a leather-effect covered fan box, the lid interior bearing the retailer's label for S. Levy, Eventailliste, 41 Avenue de L'Opera, Paris, Together with A Pink Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the paper leaf backed in thin cream gauze, the finely painted recto depicting a couple in 18th century dress greeting each other whilst seemingly out for a stroll. The verso is plain. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm. Contained in a cream card fan box First fan in good order. Second fan, the upper guard has broken and a previous repair has not held. At this point and to the side the backing gauze is worn, and also further along the leaf. Otherwise the fan seems sound. This box is damaged at the end.

A Large Mid-19th Century Mother-of-Pearl Fan, with substantial sticks, the monture silvered, carved and pierced, the gorge further painted with a central cartouche of a water feature, flowers, and birds in flight. The upper guard is embellished with a silver metal panel to the upper third, containing a mirror, the wide shoulders tapering into a carved plaited design for the lower third. The lower guard, with a similar metal panel, features a plaque with black background and white cameo style head in profile. The narrow double paper leaf shows a village setting with buildings in various forms, families and friends at leisure outside. The verso, with similar pastel painting to the gorge, shows more rural figures, in traditional costume. Contained in a card fan box with blue exterior and a very small label to the interior, for ''J&W Milne, 126 Princess Street, Edinburgh'', a crown above the wording. Guard length 11.5 inches or 29cm. Together A Large Late 19th Century Fan, the double paper leaf mounted on simple wooden sticks, lightly gilded. The recto, with bold gold background, shows three ladies relaxing in a rose arbour, one encouraging doves, another reading. The reserves feature wild flowers, a butterfly and nearby water. The verso, in dark plum, is plain. Guard length 13.5 inches or 34.5cm (2)The upper guard of the mother of pearl fan has been repaired with a long pearl splint. The lower guard has a metal plate supporting the lower section. The leaf has rubbing to most folds and some splitting, but generally the leaf is holding. Some slight loss to the dark paint in the reserves. The box is worn to most edges but holding well. The paper fan has slight damage to the lower border, where some folds are torn.

A Fine 19th Century Feather Fan, the mother of pearl monture almost iridescent in shades of dark green and mauve, the guard tips gently rounded, complementing the iridescent and beautifully marked feathers from the body of a peacock, arranged in a striking format giving movement to the fan. On the verso, the lower guard is marked ''Duvelleroy'' in gold. Guard length 7 inches or 18cm, height to top of the central feathers 10 inches or 26cmGood, the feathers are sound and bright, the monture has one blemish at the top of the lower guard, possibly natural.

A Late 19th/Early 20th Century Brussels Point De Gaze Needlelace Fan, the leaf mounted on pink Mother of Pearl with gilded decoration. The leaf is designed with a large spray of roses, with detail to the petals, accompanied by smaller flowers and foliage. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm. Contained in a card fan box covered in cream silk. Together with An Edwardian pink Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture unadorned, mounted with a leaf of black gauze edged with black machine lace, the lace descending towards the centre to wrap round a spray of flowers painted in sort greens, lemon and cream. Contained in a shaped pink card fan box embellished with silver to the outer lid and lined with cream silk (4)The Brussels lace is in good order. One bone rib has broken so the gorge stick is loose, all parts present. The gauze fan is sound and clean.

A Circa 1900 Pale Pink Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture lightly gilded with floral detail. The double fabric leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise is painted in muted green at the borders leaving a lighter central section for a cartouche of a courting couple in 18th century dress. The borders and parts of the reserve are highlighted with minute gold sequins. The verso is plain. Barrel head. Together with a card fan box covered in patterned paper. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm (2)Two gorge sticks detached from their ribs but all present.

Winter Skaters: A Large Late 19th Century Pierced Pink Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the double velum leaf painted with a rural scene of the popular winter pastime of ice skating, with all its accidents and accomplishments. Wrapped up warmly against the cold, a lady enjoys being pushed on the ice in a velvet and gilt shaped sledge, her aid dressed in finery, a small dog enjoying the fun. Other cloaked or uniformed gentlemen skate, one with his lady wearing an ornate à la polonaise silk gown. To the right of the frozen pond a stile is painted with the name of the artist, Gustave David. The recto painted with a border and scrolling central initials. Guard length 32 inches or 81cmBoth guards repaired, some loss to the areas of piercing.

An Early 20th Century Small Belgian Bobbin Lace Fan, probably Bruges, the leaf mounted on white mother of pearl, contained in a cream card fan box lined in cream silk. Guard length 8.5 inches or 21.5cm. Together with A Slightly Larger But Similar Bruges Bobbin Lace Fan, mounted on white mother-of-pearl, contained in a card fan box with olive green exterior (4)The first fan has a broken gorge stick, a clean break with both parts present. Two ribs noted as broken.

Boating in the Park: An 18th Century Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture gilded and silvered, the double leaf showing a lady walking over a precariously narrow plank as she leaves a small boat, helped by an attentive beau, a dog barking at the arrival, another couple accompanying them as they join others on the lake or picnicking on the grass. The reserves are well painted with roses and wild flowers, and gold highlights to the border. The verso features flowers and gold scrolling, and at each corner a vignette shows two cherubs at play. Together with a shaped hinged fan box covered in raspberry woven silk and lined with olive green silk and edged with braid. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm (2)Good colour and detail to the leaf, the monture gilding is bright. The top section of the upper guard has been repaired, as has a section lower down, and one gorge stick is reinforced from behind with a sliver of mother of pearl.

A Large Late 19th Century White Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture's only detail being a shape to the head. The substantial cream gauze leaf is painted with sprays of daisies and birds perched on the branch of a dog rose. Signed top left ''Eudes''. Guard length 15.75 inches or 35cm. Together with Two Further Early 20th Century Fans, one of bone with a cream gauze leaf and white machine lace overlay, guard length 9.75 inches or 25cm, the other of wood painted white, and silvered, the cream gauze leaf painted in pastels with flowers embroidered with silver sequins, and various designs formed from tapelace of the ''cucumber lace'' technique. Guard length 9.25 inches or 23.5 cm. Adorned with a cream silk tassel with plaited loop for closure (4)The MOP fan is sound, extremely light marks here and there. The second fan is sound and clean, the third fan has some splits forming in the gauze.

A Fine Quality Art Nouveau Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the green/pink monture carved and lightly pierced, silvered and gilded. The double leaf, in dark cream, shows an elegant lady in fine costume seated in a salon decorated with sumptuous furnishings, a bewigged suitor kissing her fingers, whilst a cherub hides behind a screen. The reserves feature extravagant swags of flowers and ribbons and the upper border cornucopia, being additionally embroidered with minute gold sequins to the top edge. Signed A Faugeron. Together with a cream card fan box, the inner lid with an-shaped label for ''Nathalie 187 Sloane Street London; and A Later Wooden Fan, the sticks painted light grey and decorated with silvering, the double leaf cream satin to the recto, applied with cream machine lace and marabou feathers, two winged cherubs and tiny pink flowers featuring to the centre. The verso is plain. Guard lengths 9.75 inches or 25cm, and 13.5 inches or 34cm (2)The first fan is clean, one gorge stick has been repaired near the rivet, as has the upper section of the upper guard. The marabou on the second fan is sparse in places. Slight brown staining in places.

A Circa 1900 White Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the heavy monture clouté in silver in regular designs. The cream gauze, backed with thin cream gauze, is embroidered with swirls of silver sequins of differing sizes, the sequins decreasing in size as the swirl size decreases. The inner sequins are flower shaped. Rope effect silver metal loop. Contained in a card fan box with leather effect exterior, marked for Benjamin Lachelin Eventailliste 32 Avenue de L'Opera, Paris. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm Purchased at Christie's on October 23rd 1979 for £45.00. A very shiny fan as it catches the light, and no loss to the sequins noted. The monture is sound. The gauze is however split on many folds, the sheer amount of sequins holding the leaf together and the fabric is not shedding.

Lot 2082

An Early 20th Century Pink Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture gilded and silvered, the silk leaf backed in cream gauze. The recto is painted in subtle shades of brown through to cream, the top and side borders embroidered with tiny gold sequins, the central design being one of delicate and detailed flowers, to include lilies, roses, a parrot tulip, carnations and perhaps hellebores. The reserves are painted with extravagant scrolling with gold highlights. Guard length 8.5 inches or 21cm Purchased in 1977 in an oriental antiques shop for approximately £42 (see label)The backing gauze has split in several places. Otherwise the fan appears sound.

Lot 2060

A Circa 1830's or 1840's White Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture carved, pierced, gilded and silvered, both guards with a mirror inserted near to the tip. The double paper leaf has several different scenes, some with winged cherubs. To the left an elegant lady holds a single red rose and looks pensively into the distance, a similar scene to the right. The main cartouche shows a young man in his bed, a doctor and older family members present, stretching out his arms to receive a pretty young lady who appears to have just arrived in a carriage. The verso is decorated with sprays of flowers in green and gold. Contained in a card fan box with decoration to the lift-off lid. Together with A Jenny Lind or Palmette Fan, the monture of carved wood painted gold, the leaf panels in cream sparsely embroidered with gold sequins; and A Black Net Fan, embroidered with silver sequins of differing shapes and sizes. The monture is clouté. Guard lengths: 10.5 inches or 27cm; 10.5 inches or 26.5cm; and 9 inches or 24cm (3)MOP fan: Fair to good. The verso is stained and has old repairs and some areas that would benefit from more attention. Rather crude repair to the upper guard. Generally sound. The box is grubby and has areas of wear. The Jenny Lind leaf is missing the lower guard and is a little soiled, and some of the end panels are curled under. Black fan: the top border of the leaf has loss in places, the sequins are bright and shiny. Fan generally sound.

Lot 2153

An Unusual Circa 1880's White Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture overlaid à la Sultane, lightly engraved, the alternating cream silk panels mainly appliqued with Brussels bobbin lace, one end panel with tatting, the upper border of needle lace. The verso is plain cream silk, and the shaped loop holds a cream silk tassel, decorated with curled gold metal wire, the very top a knot and toggle in gold metal thread. Guard length 8.5 inches or 21.5cm. Together with a card fan box covered in cream silk, the padded silk interior marked in gold for the retailer, J.D. Vickery, Regent Street WAt least 2 repairs to the lower guard. One crack or well done repair to the upper guard, hard to see. The backing silk is soiled and one small mark is visible on the recto.

Regency Romance: A Fine Fan, circa 1830's, the monture of white mother-of-pearl, the gorge elegantly gilded with flowers, both guards of a gold metal repoussé with flowers, the upper guards with the addition of red stones. The double paper leaf is printed and hand coloured, the recto with Moorish buildings and a garden in which three ladies light flames in the hope of finding true love. One carries a fan. Side vignettes show a winged maiden and youth, scattering flower petals and holding floral garlands. The reserves are filled with colourful butterflies and further flowers. The verso depicts a winged maiden holding a flaming torch, an admirer proffering a red rose, with the words ''Una visita de amor en casa de su hermano''. Print registration FC N382 marked to one side. Together with a fan tube covered in shiny gold paper. Guard length 8.5 inches or 21.5cm FC could refer to F. Coustellier Abaniqueros in Paris. Thanks to The Fan Museum, Greenwich, London, for information relating to print registrations, found in their latest exhibition catalogue ''The Romantic Age'', which presents a selection of fans from this period. A Circa 1900's White Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture plain, the double cream gauze leaf embroidered with silver spangles and sequins of various shapes, designed as swags and bows of ribbon with cascading flower sprays. Guard length 8.25 inches or 21cm. Together with A Bone Fan, the monture lightly carved and clouté, the double gauze leaf in cream, and embroidered with a central design in sequins in pink, pale green and silver, with various flower heads and swooping birds, and regular small posies. Guard length 8.5 inches or 21.5cm (2)The MOP fan is in good condition and clean. The gauze is split on the second fan, with some odd yellowing seen from verso.

Lot 2172

A Circa 1880's Pink Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture elaborately carved, the gorge also delicately incised to the centre with a spray of flowers. The head is shaped to produce a frilly shell effect when the fan is open. The leaf, a floral design worked in Black Chantilly lace, is backed with pale pink gauze. Contained in a fan box covered in black silk and lined in cream silk with the addition of ribbon ties to secure the fan, the inside lid marked in gold for Duvelleroy London 167 regent Street. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cmVery good, clean, shiny MOP, good lace, no damage noted.

A Circa 1880's French Pink Mother-of Pearl Fan, the monture in the demi-Sultane form with four outer serpentine sticks to each side overlaid onto the cream gauze leaf. The gauze, painted and signed by Bolliat, depicts a pensive lady dressed in flowing robes, attended by two winged cherubs, doves, flowers and insects filling any void. The gauze is bordered with Brussels Point de Gaze needlace with a rose and leaf design. Together with an unlabelled card fan box covered in white silk. Guard length 11.5 inches or 29cm Purchased at Christie's SK in 1985 for £200An odd small brown mark on the gauze. The last owner states that the fan was to have come in a fan box with the Voisin label but this was not handed to her on collection. The current box is unlabelled.

An Elegant Early 20th Century Fan, the monture of white mother-of-pearl carved and pierced, silvered and gilded, the cream leaf mounted à l'Anglaise, embroidered with gold and silver sequins and painted with dancers dressed in 18th century costume being observed by others. Contained with a simple card fan box. Together with A Circa 1890's Fan, of beige gauze bordered with slightly yellow machine lace, a young couple in 18th century dress painted centrally, the reserves with light gilding and tiny gold sequins, the monture of simple shaped wooden sticks painted pale lemon, lightly gilded. Guard length 9.75 inches or 25cm; and 12 inches or 31cm (2)Good for the first fan, the gorge particularly attractive. The lace fan leaf is splitting on the top layer of gauze, but holding.

A Late 19th Century Lace Fan, the leaf of Brussels bobbin appliqué backed with gauze, mounted on white mother-of-pearl, the upper guard with a carved initial ''C''. Contained within a turquoise blue satin covered fan box with the label for ''Vernier-Chardin, 19 rue Auber, Paris, the initials ''CC'' in gold on the lid exterior. Guard length 10.5 inches or 27cm Purchased at Phillips London on the first of September 1983 for £100. Noted in that catalogue ''Formerly the property of Princess Catherine Caratheodori whose husband, the Regent of Samos, represented the Ottoman Empire at the coronation of Tsar Nicholas II in 1896.Some splitting to the gauze on the verso, some traces of glue noticeable.

An Elegant Early 20th Century Cream Gauze Fan, the monture of white mother-of-pearl, the leaf embroidered with swags and bows of pale blue ribbon, complementing a profusion of gold sequins of various shapes and sizes, contained in a card fan box covered in cream silk and lined in cream, the inner lid bearing the gold attribution for J Duvelleroy, Regent Street, London and further ''Manufactured in Paris''. Together with A Black Wooden Fan, the monture clouté in silver metal, the double leaf embroidered with silver sequins; and Two Further Bone Fans, embroidered with sequins, on cream gauze, Regency period one with a barrel head. Guard lengths: 8.5 inches or 22cm; 9.5 inches or 24cm; 6.75 inches or 17cm and 6.5 cm or 16.5cm (4)All the cream gauze fans have an element of staining, the later example with less, but deeper marks. The fan with the barrel rivet has loose sequins and damaged net.

A Circa 1870's Fan, with a handmade lace leaf mounted on pink mother-of-pearl sticks and ribs, the upper guard bearing a gold metal monogram ''CH'' with a coronet above. The leaf, of Brussels bobbin appliqué, is worked with a floral design. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm. Together with A Mixed Belgian Lace Fan, the leaf mounted on pink mother-of-pearl, the lace design and workmanship possibly Ghent, with scrolling and use of whole and half stitch, one layer of raised petals to the central flowers. Box appears to be in good order and showing little signs of wear.
