Donald Friend 1915-1989 "Pearl Divers" fabric manufactured for an exhibition in 1947 of Modernage fabrics. Desgned by Donald Friend. 79cm X 87cm approx 'In 1947 Claudio Alcorso of Silk & Textiles Printers Pty Ltd (STP) organised the exhibition, Modernage Fabrics, which consisted of 46 fabric designs by 33 Australian artists. The fabrics, printed by his company in the colours and materials selected by the artists, were exhibited in Sydney and Melbourne. Alcorso hoped this textile exhibition would inspire Australian industries to commission Australian artists to design their products instead of copying overseas designs.

A fine and large Japanese Namban lacquer dome top coffer, Momoyama/early Edo, the top, back, front and sides decorated black lacquer panels with figures, dwellings and animals, on a fish skin ground and inlaid with mother of pearl, the brass mounts engraved melons, and with matching brass carrying handles (some loss to the mother of pearl, some of the gilt and black lacquer rubbed, predominantly to the top, one hinge detached and present, the other partially attached, very minor splitting commensurate with age), 96 cm wide See cover colour illustration Condition report ReportHeight: 47.5 cmDepth: 39 cmReport by RB95 cm wide (excluding handles), 47 cm high, 39 cm deep.The back has three hinges, two of which are detached but present (this overrides the earlier condition report in the catalogue description), to the interior, the underside of the domed top is decorated with birds and trees.The interior sides have three (of four) shaped oval discs to hide the split pin handles, and there is a visible crack to the back right hand corner of the base.There is some damage above the brass escutcheon plate, where the latch has obviously been knocking against it over the years.No key.Report by GHAll hinges present but two of them are detached.
