DUMBOPost-War Belgian (14" x 21.75")Fine+ on Linen RKO, 1947The post-war Belgian poster is really the piece to have on this title, featuring Dumbo, Timothy Q. Mouse, Carl, Jr. (the locomotive that pulls the circus train), and the two crows, is far superior to the one sheet. From 1947, this is from the original release of the movie in that country, as Belgium was occupied by Germany during the war, and films imported from America were banned. Prior to restoration, this poster had previous issues, including tiny tears, chipping, and fold wear. There have been sporadic touchups to all, including the top left corner, and there is a tax stamp in the lower left corner. The poster does contain handwritten notes and prices in the upper imprint area, which is not unusual.Dumbo (1941) is now considered one of Disney's classic and most beloved animated features. Based on a children's story by Helen Aberson-Mayer and Harold Pearl, tells the story of an elephant with oversized ears that enable him to fly. The movie was made to recover from the losses suffered after the box office failures of both Pinocchio (1940) and Fantasia (1940). These failures were caused mainly by the severe contraction of the European market during World War II, which led to a decrease in ticket sales. Unlike its predecessors, Dumbo has a shorter running time of only 64 minutes. It was deliberately made with simplicity in mind, and the directive was to keep the production cost as low as possible. This was achieved by purposely avoiding the use of special effects work that had been used in previous features. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. THE SCARLET CLAW, THE PEARL OF DEATH, THE WOMAN IN GREENSwedish One-Sheets (3) (27.5" x 39.5")Very Fine+ Rolled; Artist Gosta Aberg Universal, 1944 & 1945This lot contains three original release rolled Swedish posters for Basil Rathbone/ Nigel Bruce, and Sherlock Holmes films. The Dressed to Kill poster has two small holes in the upper right and left image. The Faces Death has Gosta Aberg artwork and the House of Fear has minor border wear.Although not the first fictional detective (that honor typically goes to Edgar Allan Poe's C. Auguste Dupin), Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes is undoubtedly the most famous. Doyle's inspiration for the character came from Joseph Bell, a Scottish surgeon at the Royal College of Edinburgh who employed Doyle as a clerk in 1877. As a teacher, Bell emphasized the critical nature of close examination and attention to detail when making a diagnosis, the effectiveness of which he demonstrated by picking out a stranger and, through observation, deducing that person's occupation and recent activities, much as Holmes does throughout his stories. Bell has been immortalized in the person of Sherlock Holmes, who is represented here by three rolled Swedish posters from the famous film series starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 8th.

After a thirteen-year partnership with Herman Marcus, Starr established his own firm in 1877, to much critical acclaim. Now working under the name T.B. Starr, the jewellery house experienced great commercial success, receiving recognition and praise by the press for Starr's unique and remarkable creations. His son joined the business in 1907 before it was sold in 1918. The technique is believed to have originated in China as early as the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It remained popular during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911/12) and spread to the Ryukyu Islands between China and Japan and thence to Japan itself. In China the technique is called, 'lo tien' and in Japan, 'aogai'. The Western name is derived from the French - sea-ear or mussel (burgau) and lacquer (laque or lac). Most of the lacquer used by Cartier in their art deco objects is likely to have been made in Ryukyu or in Japan.See exhibition catalogue 'The Art of Cartier', Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, 24 October 2012 - 17 February 2013, ill.p.188, number 239 for a similar example. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

CARTIER: EMERALD, RUBY, SAPPHIRE, PEARL AND DIAMOND-SET NECKLACE, CIRCA 1925 AND LATERThe row of alternating emerald, sapphire and ruby beads, with pearl spacers, the clasp set with a carved emerald leaf, sapphire, ruby and emerald beads and vari-cut diamonds, signed Cartier London, numbered 2184, length 39.0cmFootnotes:Provenance:Emerald Joyce Henrietta Brittain-Jones née Wallach (1902-1974);Thence by descentLots 1 - 11 belonged to Emerald Joyce Henrietta Brittain Jones née Wallach. Joyce was born in Allahabad, Utter Pradesh, India. Her father, William Wallach, was a Barrister in India. On 19th January 1924, she married Captain Jack Brittain Jones (1899-1975) of the Black Watch (1st Battalion), at a Society wedding at Middle Temple Church in London. In 1927, the couple had a daughter, Pauleen Victoria. By 1931, Jack and his family were living in India where Jack was Aide-de-Camp to Lord Willingdon, Viceroy of India. In 1931, George II of Greece (1890-1947) visited India where he met Jack and Joyce. From 1934, the correspondence from Joyce to George is loving and affectionate, clearly indicating that a deep and meaningful personal relationship had developed between them. In 1935, George II was divorced by his estranged wife, Princess Elisabeth of Romania (1894-1956), who cited desertion. Joyce and Jack also divorced in 1935, citing Jack's adultery. George II had become King of Greece in 1922, but in 1924 Greece declared itself a Republic, and the monarchy was abolished. Eventually the Greek monarchy was restored in 1935 so George returned as King. Joyce and the King then began to lead a very private life together in Greece, often at the Tatoi Palace, the Royal family's summer residence, situated thirty miles from Athens, where George was able to indulge his love of farming. Joyce reportedly knitted, read and sat quietly. She was well-liked by George's sister-in-law, Katherine, and regarded as one of the family. It is reported that Joyce refused to marry George II because she believed that a morganatic marriage, like that of Edward VIII and Mrs Simpson (also divorced), would be damaging to George's position as monarch. In 1941, Germany occupied Greece and George fled to Crete, facing many dangers including his potential capture. A British destroyer transported him into exile in Cairo, Egypt. Later in 1943, Joyce accompanied George to the United States of America as his quiet and inconspicuous companion. Joyce also accompanied George on a visit to South Africa. They had then moved to London, where Joyce engaged in war work as a Fire Warden. Joyce was a particular friend of Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent who was a Greek Princess by birth and a British Princess by marriage to Prince George, Duke of Kent. In 1946, a referendum restored the monarchy, and George II again returned to Greece as King. He desperately wanted Joyce to accompany him to Greece and put pressure on the British Government to permit her to join him. However, the Government was concerned to avoid political difficulties in Greece, and refused permission. Princess Katherine suggested that Joyce could live in Greece as her lady in waiting. Sadly, whilst waiting for a resolution and missing each other, George II died of a heart attack in his office in the Royal Palace in Athens and was buried at Tatoi Palace. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
