These charitable enterprises enabled ladies who had fallen on hard times to make a living using their needlework skills, without compromising their social standing. There was a proliferation of such societies in the late 19th century, as part of the wider Arts & Crafts Movement, producing a variety of needlework items - many made to order - such as chair covers, wall hangings, firescreens, coverlets and clothing, as well as bindings. The Working Ladies' Guild, in South Kensington, was particularly known for the production of carefully stitched bookcovers, typically incorporating metalwork, as here.
