Property of a West London gentleman; acquired before 2000. Saint Panteleimon was born in the city of Nicomedia as Pantoleon to a wealthy family in the third century. As an adult man, he converted to Christianity and was baptised by St. Hermolaus with the name Panteleimon (meaning “all-merciful”"). After his father died, St Panteleimon used his medical knowledge to help the poor and healed them in the name of Christ. However, when he was asked to heal a paralysed man in front of the emperor, he did it by calling the name of Christ. For this, he was tortured and beheaded. When it happened, the olive tree to which he was tied became covered with fruit and his body was thrown into a fire, but remained unharmed. His relics were distributed throughout all the Christian world, while the legend says that his head is now located at the Russian monastery of St Panteleimon on Mt. Athos.
