A silver,coral and mother of pearl Stoup, Trapani (Italy), 19th Century; ; ovoidal shape with coral inserts, chased and embossed with flower and leaves, is centered with a coral sculptur of the "Virgin of Trapani" on a Triumph of Cherubs. Wooden frame not pertinent. 44 x 30.5 cm, 17 21?64 x 12 1?64 in (without frame). Item condition grading: **** good. Acquasantiera in argento, corallo e madreperla - Trapani, XIX secolo; ; di forma ovoidale sagomata, sbalzata e cesellata con fiori e volute, è decorata con inserti in corallo e presenta una cornice esterna in foglie di madreperla. In posizione centrale, sopra la vasca, spicca una scultura in corallo raffigurante la Madonna di Trapani posta sopra un trionfo di cherubini. In cornice lignea non coeva. 44 x 30,5 cm (senza cornice). Stato di conservazione: **** buono.

Cf. RIC 1a (*SIRM). 3.67g, 22mm, 6h. Good Extremely Fine. In outstanding condition for a plated solidus, being given away only by its low weight and an edge nick probably caused by a plough while buried. A superb example of an ancient counterfeit in gold. Such coins are extremely rare, at least in part due to the severe penalties that were imposed on those caught counterfeiting imperial gold - offenders might be condemned to the mines, crucified or given to wild beasts to be torn apart.
