AN ENGLISH WALNUT MANTEL CLOCK, PAYNE & CO. NEW BOND STREET, CIRCA 1860 BUYERS ARE ADVISED THAT A SERVICE IS RECOMMENDED FOR CLOCKS PURCHASED the 13,5cm floral chased gold mask inscribed 'Payne & Co. New Bond Str', with a 9cm enamelled chapter ring with Arabic hour numeral, four pillar double fusee movement striking on a spiral gong, the stepped hood with leaf-cast handle, glazed sides, on a plinth base, on bracket feet 22,5cm high excluding handle This exceptional wooden cased clock is a rare find at auction in South Africa. In the style of a carriage clock it is an intriguing piece. William Payne is first recorded as working in London in 1816. In 1825 he moved to New Bond Street which is the address inscribed on this clock.
