An antique French gilt bronze Rococo style clock garniture, the mantel clock of waisted keyhole shape, profusely decorated with 'C' scrolls acanthus and floral swags, cream porcelain enamel dial with black letters and finely cut brass hands, the bezel is fitted with convex glass, clock measures 51 x 34.5, together with a pair of candelabras, each featuring elaborate acanthus arms held aloft on asymmetric urns with conforming bases, each measuring 52 x 25cm. A 19TH CENTURY FRENCH GILT MANTEL CLOCK GARNITURE the circular 11cm diameter convex white enamel dial with black Arabic numerals and painted floral swag decoration, the two-train striking mechanism stamped 'CH VCNE / PARIS / 47537', the glazed case with bevelled plates, cast metal mounts, an urn surmount and a marble base raised on cast feet, overall 41cm high; flanked by a pair of twin-branch candelabra, each approximately 31.5cm high. Condition Report : Complete with sunburst pendulum; lacking key. Goret, ParisThe highly elaborate rococo case cast with scrolls, ribbons and stylised organic forms; two figures with clubs climb the sides of the clock in pursuit of a well dressed moustachioed character about to jump into a stretched blanket held by two men below; a turbanned character looks on from the rear right, to the rear left a wrapped package (perhaps a full purse?) hangs to the side. The sides are pierced with flowers and leaves backed in red silk. The signed 7.5 inch white enamel dial with large Roman and Arabic numerals framing the concentric date dial, with pierced gilt and blued steel hands. Large twin train movement signed Louis Goret a Paris with anchor escapement, silk suspension and a solid outside numbered countwheel strike on a bell, protected by a solid hinged door. 50cms (19.5ins) high.Footnotes:This remarkable case is related to a similar clock in the Wallace Collection, London, signed Furet, Paris, and dated to circa 1745-50. The composition is very similar, using five characters from the Commedia dell'arte to the front. Their example sits on four tall scroll supports, the rear left being mounted with a tambourine, whereas the current lot has a heavy bag in the same position. The signed 4.5 inch white enamel Roman and Arabic dial with good gilt hands within a beaded bezel and set on a stack of three books, and a folded paper engraved with the signs of the Zodiac, to the left sits Urania in Classical robes and holding a spyglass in her lowered right hand, a starry globe at her feet, all set on a low rectangular base with heavy cast berried laurel swags tied by a ribbon, on a shaped base with applied 'guilloche' decoration, on large bun feet; the front and rear panels with silk-backed pierced frets and opening doors. The circular clock movement signed around the lower edge Julien LeRoy, AParis, with silk suspension and numbered outside countwheel strike on a bell; with lead-off wire to activate the musical movement below on the hour; the tune played on 12 stacked graduated bells and 22 hammers driven by a large wire fusee movement wound from the side 48cms (19ins) high.Footnotes:In March 1826 an auction was held of the possessions of the late Monsieur Doyen, wherein lot 40 was described as 'A carillon clock by Julien Le Roy, decorated with a bronze figure representing a seated woman surrounded by the attributes of astronomy.' To her right sits a collared lioness and at her feet is a tortoise, all raised on a shaped bow-fronted plinth with applied foliate swags and a cherub frieze, on gilt toupie feet.
