Claude Galle (French, 1759-1846): A good early 19th century French gilt bronze and verde antico marble figural mantel clockthe dial signed Galle, Rue Vivienne a Paristhe case cast as a young lovestruck troubadour in Renaissance style dress seated on a stone fountain head with maskhead spout, a winged putto pulling the strings of his lyre, the base modelled with bull rushes and a poetic inscribed rustic stone tablet, the rectangular marble plinth with applied ribbon tied musical trophies, on stylised paw feet, the 4' signed enamel dial with Roman numerals and outer Arabic quarter hour track, the brass twin train movement with silk suspension and outside countwheel striking on a bell, with pendulum and two winders, 46.5cm high Footnotes:Claude Galle was one of the leading French bronziers of his day and he created numerous gilt bronzes for the Royal and subsequently Imperial household. Born at Villepreux near Versailles, he was apprenticed to the fondeur, Pierre Foy at rue du Four. In 1784 he married Foy's daughter and after the Foy's death, took over the workshop and built it into one of the finest of its kind, eventually employing about 400 craftsmen. In 1786 he became a maitre-fondeur and in the same year received the first of many commissions from the Garde-Meuble to furnish the royal palaces. An early 19th century French gilt bronze and white figural marble mantel clockthe dial signed Piolaine a Paristhe 4.25' enamel Arabic dial with engraved gilt lattice hands, the cast bezel set within a rectangular case surmounted by an armillary sphere and flanked by a maiden reading from an open book, a younger boy looking on, the breakfront plinth with applied frieze on tapering feet, the twin train drum shaped movement with flattened lower edge and later Brocot suspension, the outside countwheel striking on a bell, 36cms highFootnotes:Piolaine was a major Paris clockmaker during the last quarter of the 18th and first quarter of the 19th centuries. He became a maître in August 1787, setting up his studio on Rue Ecrivains before moving to Rue Des Gravilliers in 1810. Elliott walnut cased mantel clock, square case, square brass dial with silvered chapter ring, engraved and with cast spandrels, signed Fattorini Bradford, bracket feet, 15cm.Condition report:The clock is working at the present time although no guarantee is given. There is some loss of veneer to the bottom of the side and right-hand-side. There is some rubbing to the left edge of the front. There is some loss of black to the metal casing on the back.
