A 19th century Meissen porcelain 'Prometheus' mantel clock, of impressive proportions, the case surmounted with figure of Zeus brandishing fire with attendant eagle over the convex white enamel dial with gilt brass bezel, all in floral encrusted surround, the base with scene of Hercules freeing the imprisoned Prometheus amidst flowers and foliage, the whole decorated in bright enamels and heightened in gilt, with underglaze blue crossed sword mark verso, the clock dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, twin winding holes for a French brass eight day cylinder movement by Henry Marc of Paris and numbered 61306, striking on a bell, with pendulum, h.70cmCondition report: Small area of restoration to crown.Minor chips to end of torch in his left hand.Some chips to applied flower heads but generally good.Some flower heads from 4 – 8 o’clock restored.Hairline to Hercules right leg.Scratch to Hercules shoulder.Hairline visible to inside of back, but not to front.Eagle’s left wing restored.Otherwise figures and bird appear good and complete.Glaze, enamels and gilt excellent, bright and vibrant.Made in two sections, with signs of the join.Movement good, with pendulum.
Swinburn of Durham - a late Victorian polished satinwood cased four glass mantel clock, having a signed silvered dial, single winding hole for a brass eight day gut driven fusee movement with anchor escapement, the case with bevelled glass panels, raised on bun feet, bearing engraved tablet annotated Lieutenant Commodore T.L. Hinmers RNVR 1940-1945 from H.M.H., h.24.5cm.Runs and winds.With original pendulum and both keys.No apparent damage or repairs to case or movement.A good example.
A mid-19th century rosewood and brass inlaid mantel clock, known 'The Courier of St Petersburg' mantelpiece clock , having convex white enamel dial with Roman numerals, single winding hole for a French brass eight day cylinder movement, twin ring handles, the base with cut-out brass panel depicting Andrew Ducrow's Courier of St Petersburg Act of Horsemanship riding five in hand, standing on the rear two horses, the other three in front, the whole raised on chased brass ball feet, h.53cm. A similar example in mahogany can be found in the Victoria & Albert Museum collection , museum No.S.877-1981. This was exhibited in the V&A Circus Display celebrating the 250th anniversary of the foundation of circus April 2018 - February 2019.
