D'HONNEUR beneath further numbers 5 2 to centre, the dial with black and cream rosette champleve enamelled centre within relief-cast Roman cartouche numeral chapter ring inscribed J. BAILLY, LYON to inner edge, with blued steel hands set behind hinged cast gilt brass bevel-glazed bezel, the case with leafy finial to the ogee-shaped caddy upstand decorated in cream and black champleve enamel with foliate designs over cavetto moulded collar and repeating leaf-cast top moulding incorporating projecting rounded corners supporting lobed spire finials, the front with lappet leaf bordered panel enclosing the dial within symmetrical stylised foliate scroll decorated cream and black champleve enamel infill flanked by free-standing slender leaf cast baluster columns to the angles, the sides with conforming enamelled panels set within matching borders, the rear with frosted glazed hinged circular movement cover and conforming columns to angles, on lobed stepped ogee moulded skirt base with disc feet; the candelabra side pieces each with central shouldered enamelled baluster upright issuing pair of champleve fronted branches applied with conforming decorated sconces and drip pans, on concave cream and black enamelled foot over lobed moulded square platform with disc feet, (3). G'DE MED. D'HONNEUR roundel to centre, stamped G243 to upper left and 5 8 to lower margin, the rectangular porcelain dial plate with asymmetric blue and gilt floral Plumbago sprays onto a cream ground incorporating vertically aligned circular Arabic cartouche numerals, the centre inscribed BAILEY, BANKS & BIDDLE and with gilt hands, the case with turned gilt finial to the ogee-shaped porcelain dome superstructure decorated with conforming floral sprays over projecting rounded angles applied with smaller conforming porcelain domes over slender free-standing double baluster turned corner columns, the sides with rectangular panels matching the dial and the rear with circular hinged gilt movement cover, on skirt base inset with a porcelain panel to the front and also with elaborate moulded projecting angles fitted with turned feet; the urn-shaped side pieces with domed covers, brass collars and stepped ovoid porcelain bodies decorated with conforming gilt Plumbago blooms applied with elaborate baluster-turned scroll-shaped side handles, on panel inset skirt bases incorporating projecting rounded angles, (3). The clock 42cm (16.5ins) high, 24cm (9.5ins) wide, 19.5cm (7.75ins) deep; the side pieces 37.5cm (14.75ins) high, 14.5cm (5,75ins) wide, 11cm (4.25ins) deep. Bailey Banks and Biddle were a leading firm of retail jewellers who were founded as Bailey and Kitchen in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1832. The business was known as Bailey and Company from 1841 and became Bailey Banks and Biddle in 1878. During the late 19th century they operated from 1218 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, and continued trading under the ownership of various parent organisations up until 2019. Condition Report: No damage or restoration noted to the ceramic panels (not examined out of mounts) except two of the corner minarets are cracked. Movement: striking correctly and with half hour pass strike. Movement not in beat and not running, will need a service. A FRENCH ALABASTER AND GILT METAL MOUNTED MANTEL CLOCK LATE 19TH CENTURY The eight-day bell striking movement with Arabic numeral dial, the case of lyre form 47cm high Condition Report: The clock strikes when pushed through the hours, the clock has two keys and winds however the pendulum does not keep momentum and the clock stops quickly.
