Smith & Sons, Chipping Norton", raised on bracket foot supports bearing plaques inscribed "Presented to Miss Lilian Maud Brassey on the occasion of her marriage" and "By the Parishioners, Tenants, Kennel Servants and Employees on the Heythrop Estate with best wishes Dec 6th 1898", 56 cm high. A 19th Century mahogany and inlaid mantel clock, the eight day twin fusée movement with brass arched dial, the silvered strike/silent dial over the main silvered dial with chapter ring of Roman and Arabic numerals enclosing a subsidiary date aperture and engraved ground with plaque inscribed "Wm Robb, Montrose", 44 cm high. CONDITION REPORTS Has general signs of wear conducive to age throughout. The case itself - brass has general rubbing. The top of the case on the back edge of the top - there is a slight loosening of the glued veneer in one place (please see image). There are a couple of cracks running along the edge of the veneer approx 2 cm long each (please see images). The back hinges on the door - there is some cracking to the veneer where clearly the door has at some point been opened rather too quickly - measuring 0.5 cm and 0.3 cm either side of the hinge. Above the glass door at the back there is a vertical crack about 1.5 cm long from the edge of the glass to the outer edge (please see image). There has been a repair to the bottom of the arch - quite poorly done and re-painted about 1 cm x 0.5 cm. The opposite side of the arch is missing the lower corner altogether. The bottom section of the door at the back by the glass - please see image but all around the edge has been damaged and knocked so the outer edge is very uneven and in poor condition. There are several small pieces of veneer missing around the right hand side at the back - at the top 1 cm x 1.5 cm and on the outer edge 2 cm x 1 cm. On the bottom edge running along the case there is a section of beading missing approx 3 cm x 1 cm (please see images). The back feet all have slight knocks to the edges (please see images). One side panel has at least four splits running vertically from the side glass right to the outside. The bottom edge of the glass again is quite rough and in poor condition (please see image). The bottom edge beading has damage and has had a section replaced approx 1 cm x 0.5 cm which is not quite a match. Looking at the front of the clock, both feet have some minor knocks and bumps to edges and the outer beading has little nicks on the edges but overall it appears reasonably sound. The other side panel again shows similar damage with at least six or eight small splits running from the edge of the glass to the outside of the panel. The bottom edge again is in rough condition (please see image) and there is some splitting to the veneers in various places with a deep scratch on the top. We are unable to guarantee whether or not clock is in working order but appears to have general wear throughout and would suggest movement in person. Movement was a verge escapement, later case.
