BLACK BASALT and MARBLE MANTEL CLOCK, 8-day movement with key. bearing brass presentation plaque "Presented by Major R. Rogers and the Officers, 1st Gloucester Engineer Volunteers, Cheltenham. Won by Bugler H. Arkell, 1885" Major (later Colonel) Richard Rogers was a local dental surgeon, and Commanding Officer of the 1st Gloucester Royal Engineer Volunteers, receiving the Volunteer Decoration. He was an Alderman of the Borough and later Mayor on several occasions. Received the Freedom of the Borough, Governor of the Grammar School, laid the foundation stone of the Town Hall, was a Justice of the Peace and a County Councillor. (See "Who`s Who in Cheltenham")
