Kidson, The Paintings of George Romney, New Haven and London, 2015, vol. II, p. 602, cat. no. 1352 (as untraced)EngravedWilliam Sharp, line, 5 November 1794The sitter of the present portrait was a Manchester cotton merchant and political reformer. Having already been acquainted with the writings of Rousseau, Hume, Locke, and Voltaire, his political interests were most likely further aroused after he married Hannah Shore in 1775, whose brother, Samuel Shore was a Unitarian and member of the Society of the Friends of the People. As an outspoken protectionist, Walker earned national fame in 1785 when he successfully led a local campaign to oppose the government's introduction of a fustian tax. By the end of 1787 Walker had become chairman of a Manchester anti-slavery committee, holding the post for several years. These efforts endeared him to many leading Foxite Whigs, especially the earl of Derby, who became godfather to one of Walker's sons and who sponsored Walker's election to the Whig Club in 1788. Walker was also associated with the Manchester Revolution Society and on 1 February 1788 he became a member of the Society for Constitutional Information. Following the outbreak of the French Revolution, Walker was elected a steward of the London Revolution Society. In 1791 he helped establish the Manchester Herald and his house became a rendezvous for reformers after they were excluded from local taverns and public houses. He was tried and acquitted of High Treason in 1794.Romney's Ledger records that the present portrait was begun on 9 July 1793, that the first recorded sitting was on the 15th and the fourth and final one on the 31st of that month. The sitter paid £20 on 20 July and the balance of £15 16s, possibly as early as the same day, judging from the entry in the Receipt Book which suggests that the whole fee was received at once. The work was sent to William Sharp to be engraved on 10 October. It is highly likely that it was undertaken for the purposes of the engraving all along and Sharp no doubt viewed it as a sequel to his engraving of Romney's portrait of Thomas Paine, the first state of which had been published in 20 April, 1793. Together with Paine, Walker was Romney's most prominent Radical client during the early 1790s and the commission reinforced the artist's image as a sympathiser with the French Revolution. Sharp's engraving was the subject of a witty letter from engraver to sitter requesting him to 'get into a scrape' in order to make the print sell well after it was initially published on 5 November, 1794. In February 1795 Walker requested alterations to the engraving and it is recorded in March of that year that it was 'finished under Romney's directions'.We are grateful to Alex Kidson for confirming that the present portrait is Romney's original that was hitherto only known from Sharp's engraving. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

He excelled at all sports and shortly before the outbreak of war played rugby for Scotland against England, Ireland, and Wales. ¦¦Scobie was sent out to France in October 1914. Though wounded shortly after his arrival, he recovered to fight in the trenches for the remainder of the war, being twice mentioned in dispatches and winning the Military Cross. Promoted captain in 1917, he received his brevet majority just two years later. In September 1920 he returned to England, where for four years he commanded a company at Woolwich. From 1927 to 1931 he was a staff captain, and later a brigade major, at Aldershot, before spending three years overseas as director of military artillery at the Royal Military Academy, Australia, during which he was promoted brevet lieutenant-colonel. On 9 February 1927 he married Joan Duncan (b. 1904/5), daughter of William Henry Sidebotham, a solicitor, of Farnham, Surrey and they later had a daughter.¦¦By 1939 Scobie was in London, as a full colonel and assistant adjutant-general at the War Office, and on the outbreak of war was made deputy director of mobilization, a role at which he excelled. In late spring 1940 he went out to the Middle East to serve as deputy adjutant-general on General Wavell~s staff before being appointed, in August, as a brigadier, general staff, in the Sudan. There, under General Sir William Platt, he helped plan the northern arm of the massive pincer that broke Italian military power in east Africa. Scobie with Platt captured Agordat in February 1941, broke the kernel of Italian resistance at Keren in March 1941, and finally took the whole of Eritrea. In the opinion of General Sir Frank Messervy, a fellow officer and friend, it was Scobie, through his diplomatic handling of two quarrelling divisional commanders and his insistence on persevering with the attack, who saw the crucial battle of Keren through to its victorious end.¦¦In October 1941, a month before Sir Claude Auchinleck launched his ~Crusader~ offensive against Rommel, Scobie, now a major-general, was appointed to succeed General Moreshead as commander of the garrison of Tobruk. After leading the 70th British division in by sea to relieve the Australian defenders, he and his men held the fortress in the face of furious enemy assault and even broke out from the town to make contact, if only for a few hours, with Auchinleck~s advance troops. Besieged again, with only forty-eight hours of artillery ammunition left, Scobie kept attacking as the battle of Sidi Razegh raged to the south. The garrison held out for another two weeks before finally being relieved. For his efforts in Eritrea and at Tobruk he was appointed OBE in 1941 and CB in 1942.¦¦From February to August 1942, for the duration of Rommel~s counter-offensive, Scobie was once again on the staff as deputy adjutant-general. His next posting was as general officer commanding another beleaguered outpost, this time the island of Malta. There he remained, blockaded by sea and under attack from the air, until the siege was finally lifted with the conclusion of the north African campaign. He returned to Cairo in 1943 as chief of staff to General Sir Henry Maitland Wilson, commander-in-chief Middle East, where, among other tasks, he helped plan the invasion of Sicily and amphibious operations in the Aegean.¦¦In the following year Scobie was given command of the British force due for dispatch to Greece to keep order, following the German withdrawal, until a constitutional administration could be established. When he and his force duly arrived in October 1944 they found the country in a state of complete disorder and on the verge of widespread civil war. Members of EAM, the communist-led movement of national liberation, and of its military wing, ELAS, were threatening to seize power and already occupied much of Athens and the surrounding countryside. Supported by the British government, Scobie declared publicly that all guerrilla groups must disband, that he would stand by the returned Greek government in exile, led by Georgeios Papandreou, until a legal armed force was behind it and free elections could be held, and that he would protect it against any coup d~état. EAM denied the charge that they were preparing a coup, but the crisis quickly reached boiling point.¦¦In December 1944 heavy fighting broke out in Athens between ELAS and British troops. At one point British and Greek government forces seemed in danger of being overwhelmed. Reinforcements were sent, with a corps commander to take operational control, enabling Scobie to assume overall command. Only after a visit to Athens by Winston Churchill and Anthony Eden late in December did the civil strife there begin to draw to a close. Papandreou resigned, a regency was declared, and a new cabinet formed, more acceptable to EAM. But it took forty days of bitter fighting before Scobie and four ELAS delegates signed a military truce, on 11 January 1945, and disarmament of the guerrillas could start.¦¦Scobie~s fine efforts in Greece were recognized by his appointment to KBE in 1945. Most Greeks, too, held him in high esteem, perhaps unusually for a commander of foreign troops engaged as a temporary force of occupation, but their affection and respect were genuine. He received the freedom of Athens and the grand medal of the municipality, and was decorated with the grand cross of George I of Greece, and whenever in public was greeted by cheers and cries of ~Scobie! Scobie! Scobie!~. He remained in command in Greece until 1946. Abridged from the Oxford Dictionary of Biography, accessed October 2022. ¦¦

Ruskin (John 1819-1900).  A very good autograph letter signed to ‘Dear Mrs. Marshall’, on his headed paper, from Brantwood, Coniston, dated 2nd March [18]73, 4 pp (single folded sheet), in his small tidy hand, with a typed transcript.  ‘This is the first mild day of March .. the air was infinitely sweet this afternoon by the shore  -  Snow all gone. Just before it fell, I took a walk to the top of the rocks on the west of your tarn .. I maintain  this view from your crags to be the finest mountain panorama in the lakes .. I am going to Oxford for three weeks only, to give three lectures on Robin, Swallow and Chough as subjects of fine art .. Your carefully directed parcel of books came just when and where it ought ..’ A long, warm, chatty letter to a neighbour, showing his interest in and response to his natural environment, signed ‘faithfully & gratefully yours’. The recipient, Mrs. [Mary] Marshall, nee Mary Spring Rice, was a maid of honour to Queen Victoria; her father was then Chancellor of the Exchequer. With this item is offered a framed watercolour drawing by Ruskin of a botanical specimen, signed indistinctly lower right, circa 7 ins x 5 ins, with label to rear inscribed ‘Painted by John Ruskin for Nelly O’Brien when she was a child & was his pupil, & given by Margaret O’Brien to Edith Wilkinson Xmas 1925. After my death I wish it to be given to Elinor O’Brien.’ The O’Briens mentioned are from the Cahirmoyle family (of William Smith O’Brien).  The ancestry is complicated, but Nelly O’Brien was a niece of Charlotte Grace O’Brien, daughter of WSOB. Margaret O’Brien was Nelly’s half-sister. Mary Spring Rice (daughter of Baron Monteagle) married James Garth Marshall of Yorkshire. Other Marshall family correspondence with Ruskin,Tennyson and others is apparently in Leeds University library. Ruskin was a writer, artist and social reformer, one of the most influential cultural figures of the Victorian age, particularly in relation to architecture. (2)

A Regency pollard oak, yew and ebony centre table attributed to George Bullock, c.1815, the circular top inlaid with a continuous band of honeysuckle, flower heads and ivy, above a turned column and a scrolled triform base with applied roundels, terminating in anti-friction castors, 131cm diameter 73cm high Provenance: The Estate of Jasper Gibbons Grinling, late of The Old Vicarage, Helions Bumpstead, Essex. Literature: J Murray and H Blairman & Sons, 'George Bullock Cabinet Maker', 1988, pp.95-96.George Bullock (c.1777-1818) is one of the most celebrated English cabinetmakers of the Regency period, and those pieces made or designed by him during the early part of the 19th century are particularly recognisable by the abundance of British flora in their ornament and the often used native timbers such as oak, yew, holly, larch and laburnum, in place of the more exotic woods that were so favoured by other leading makers of the time. This example, constructed from pollard oak, yew and ebony, closely resembles several examples that have come to market in recent years, the most notable of which being an example supplied to Matthew Robinson Boulton at Tew Park, Oxfordshire in 1817, which was sold most recently at Christie’s, 'Important English Furniture', 27 November 2003, lot 160. The ‘honeysuckle’ pattern for the inlaid border on the table was likely used for the first time on a desk stand that was purchased by Queen Charlotte in 1812 and, according to Murray, it appears in the 'Wilkinson Tracings', a scrapbook into which a wide range of tracings and engravings were pasted or loosely inserted, inscribed to the first page ‘Tracings by Thomas Wilkinson, from the designs of the late Mr George Bullock 1820'. These impressions are considered to be one of the most important sources regarding Bullock’s work and were acquired in 1974 by the City Museum and Art Gallery in Birmingham. To date, there is very little evidence with which to identify Thomas Wilkinson or work out how he had access to the original designs. Another close example (Christie’s, 'The English Collector', 21 May 2015, lot 121) which, as per Ackermann’s 'Repository of Arts', is described as being in the ‘French antique taste’ and is suggested to have possibly come from Bullock’s workshop. It has an identical turned column and base and is noted to bear a black wash to the undersides, which is said to be characteristic of his work; the same wash appears beneath the present example.Condition ReportSome fading and discolouration throughout. Split to the top. Some scratches, knocks and wear to top. Some chips and losses to veneer, inlay and moulding throughout, with small areas of cosmetic repair and patches. Brass lock action a little bent but appears functional. A little bit of movement in the top, but column and base joints generally tight and solid. Overall in fairly 'sleepy' condition, with a little bit of cosmetic attention needed.
