Following the Seven Years War in 1763, France ceded the islands of Tobago, Dominica, St Vincent, Bequia and Grenada to Britain, whereupon the land was divided up for sale or lease to sugar planters. With Thomas Jefferys' Tobago from Actual Surveys and Observations (London, Robert Sayer, 1775, engraved map, framed and glazed) and an 18th-century engraving of related interest incorporating depictions of sea and land-battles and a small inset map of Tobago. Holland, RAF, 8th February 1960.

A RARE WORLD WAR I MACHINE GUNNER'S 'WELSH KNIFE' OF THE 9TH BATTALION, ROYAL WELSH FUSILIERS, CIRCA 1917-18 entirely of steel, or regulation type, with broad leaf-shaped blade, stepped folding circular guard locking into the forte, plain tang with a portion of cord binding, sharpened pommel, and original canvas-covered leather scabbard with belt loop, 59.8 cm ProvenanceHerbert George Davis (1883-1967), who was in service with the Howard de Walden family before and after World War I.Thence by descent. Allegedly based on an ancient Welsh weapon (later proved not to be the case), the "Welsh Knife" was designed by the sculptor and armourer Felix Joubert in 1916. A limited number were made by the Wilkinson Sword Company at the behest of Lord Howard de Walden who commanded the Battalion between September and December 1917. A memorandum of 27 January 1920 in the Imperial War Museum states "9th Batt'n. Royal Welsh Fusiliers. This battalion made use of a knife with which all machine gunners and bombers were always equipped. Every member of a raiding party was so armed and in one raid on the Messines Ridge two days before the battle of Messines they were used with conspicuous success. They were provided by Lord Howard de Walden and were a replica of a weapon used by Ancient Welsh tribes. They were double-edged, but were intended more for bayonetting than cutting."

(?W.) D. Foryce, 78th Highlanders, 24th August 1872.
THE 1897 PATTERN INFANTRY OFFICER’S SWORD OF ERIC DALBIAC LUARD (1878- 1903), QUEEN’S OWN REGIMENT, BY WILKINSON, NO. 39642 FOR 1902 of regulation type, with etched blade including crowned Royal arms and cypher and maker’s details, nickel-plated hilt, in its field service scabbard (worn), 82.7 cm blade The Wilkinson sword records state sword no. 39642, Infantry pattern (nickel plated), was sold to E.D. Luard, Royal West Kent Regiment, 5th November 1902. Lieutenant Eric Dalbiac Luard, served with the Royal West Kent Regiment, contracted enteric fever in Africa and died at Garrero in 1903, while attached to the 2nd King’s African Rifles.

BALL ACTON, BY WILKINSON, NO. 34501 FOR 1896 of regulation type, with etched blade including crowned Royal cypher, owner’s name and maker’s details, nickel-plated hilt, in its field service scabbard, with sword knot, 82.0 cm blade The Wilkinson sword records state sword no. 34501, 95th Rifles pattern, was sold to C. A. Ball Acton, 25th September 1896. Stated by the vendor to be the sword of Major Charles Elmhirst Luard (1876-1914), gazetted to the Norfolk Regiment on 18 November 1896, Served in Central Africa in 1899 and West Africa. Severely wounded in the operations in Ashanti (now southern Ghana), he was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order in 1901. Served in East Africa in 1903, Captain in 1905. Initially reported missing in action at Chivres Hill, Missy-sur-Aisne, later it was officially confirmed that he must be presumed to have been killed in action.

Five: Sapper C. E. Wilkinson, Royal Engineers, late Machine Gun Corps British War and Victory Medals (115887 Pte. C. E. Wilkinson M.G.C.); Defence and War Medals 1939-45; Efficiency Medal, G.VI.R., 2nd issue, Militia (2212931 Spr. C. E. Wilkinson. R.E.) nearly very fine (5) £60-£80 --- Charles E. Wilkinson served with the 7th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps, during the Great War, suffering a case of impetigo in August 1918. Enlisting in the Royal Engineers on 21 May 1925, his record card states that he was made a Prisoner of War on 18 June 1940 whilst serving with the 23rd Field Company. This is subsequently crossed out, the card noting: ‘Relegated to Class ‘W’ R.A.R., 16/7/40.’ Sold with a Daily Mail sports medallion for push ball, engraved to reverse ‘Chelmsford September 7th 1929 L/Cpl C E Wilkinson’, and a photographic image of the recipient.

1994 Lucas Redebe Assessment file on player ability, fitness, suitability, history and other relevant matters with paper copy exchanges with Leeds Utd FC; Redebe was currently (1994) playing for Kaiser Chiefs and was captain, Redebe ultimately signed for Leeds Utd where Howard Wilkinson was the manager, stayed for 11 years until 2005. The copy file is an interesting in depth analysis of the player in terms of character, ability and other virtues of the modern professional footballer. Good. (1)
