CLARICE CLIFF BY BILLIE WATERS 'ART IN INDUSTRY' DEER PATTERN PLATE circa 1934, designed by Billie Waters (1896-1979), base stamped 'Designed by Billie Waters' with signature, 'Produced in Bizarre by Clarice Cliff, Wilkinson Ltd' and 'Copyright reserved, First Edition 1934', 25.5cm in diameter Note: In 1933 a project began to involve leading artists of the day in designing wares which were then produced by Clarice Cliff in the Bizarre workshops. The results were displayed in a Harrods tableware exhibition in 1934. The Art in Industry Exhibition then toured the country and the public could place orders for the exhibited designs.

British Martini Henry 1887 Pattern Mk III Sword Bayonet by Wilkinson Sword, two piece grip with steel mounted cross guard and muzzle ring. Housed in its leather scabbard with brass mounts. Un-fullered blade with acceptance stamps to the forte and Wilkinson Sword Company London makers mark. Bade measures 46 ½ cm in length. Generally good condition.
Fairbairn Sykes (F.S) Commando Fighting Knife by Wilkinson Sword, nickel silver ribbed hilt with plain cross guard. Double edged blade with By Appointment to HM Queen Elizabeth II Sword Cutlers and Wilkinson Sword makers panel. Blade measures 17 ½ cm in length. Housed in its original brown leather scabbard with nickel silver lower chape and elasticated strap to the top of the leg attachment. Scabbard would fit a 1st pattern commando knife.
Royal Dublin Fusiliers Regimentally Marked 1907 Bayonet, standard type example with stamping to the top pommel “5.D F 318”. Wooden grips remain in good condition. Housed in the original leather and steel mounted scabbard. Blade stamped with acceptance stamps and crowned GR with 1907 date below and Sanderson makers mark. Blade measures 42 ½ cm in length. Accompanied by another 1907 pattern bayonet complete with the original scabbard made by Wilkinson. Both bayonets show some wear and pitting to the exterior fittings but both blades are in good condition. (2 items)
WW2 Fairbairn Sykes (F.S) Commando Fighting Knife by Wilkinson Sword, blackened brass handle with top securing nut. Plain blackened cross guard. Double edged blade with The FS Fighting Knife panel to one side and the other side having Wilkinson Sword London makers mark. Blade measures 16cm in length. Housed In its original leather scabbard, missing leg tabs and top section of scabbard. Good used example.
WW2 British 1st Pattern Fairbairn Sykes (F.S) Fighting Knife, with nickel silver plated grip, S type guard. The blade stamped to the forte with “THE F-S FIGHTING KNIFE” and the other side with Wilkinson Sword logo. Double edged blade which has been sharpened and shortened, this has been done period as with so many of these fighting knives. Housed in a scabbard for a 2nd or 3rd pattern commando knife. Good used example.
1827 Pattern George VI Royal Navy Officers Dress Sword by Wilkinson, excellent example retaining nearly all of the original fire gilt wash finish to the lion head top and dish guard. Sharkskin grip retaining the original wire. Gold bullion wire dress knot with blue fleck. Original black leather scabbard with gilt metal fittings. Catch fitting to the reverse engraved “D.BAILEY”. Mint condition single edged blade with etched crown fouled anchor and George VI monogram. Base of the blade has Wilkinson Sword Co Ltd makers mark and the spine of the blade is numbered 68803. Sword is housed in the original oilskin carry bag.
1912 Pattern British Cavalry Sword by Wilkinson Attributed to Captain Edgar Ralph Coles 3rd (Prince of Wales Own) Dragoon Guards, Killed in Action 12th May 1915, standard pattern example with large engraved dish bowl guard, fish skin grip retaining the original wire. Sword is housed in its original brown leather covered field service scabbard with special pattern hanging strap for the Sam Browne belt. Blade is etched with foliage, Royal monogram and initials “E.R.C” to the blank panel. Blade has Henry Wilkinson Pall Mall London makers mark to the base with the spine being numbered 43661. Blade measures 88cm in length. Some surface staining to the blade but generally a very nice example. Edgar Ralph Coles was born on 13th May 1889 at Burntwood, Caterham. He was the second son of Ernest and Adela Powell. Educated at Marlborough College and Magdalene College, Cambridge. He had a keen interest in flying and held certificate number 858 of the Royal Aviation Club. 1910 he entered the 3rd Dragoon Guards as a University candidate, being commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. Promoted to Lieutenant in March 1911 and Captain in November 1914. His regiment was serving in Cairo in 1914, but with the outbreak of the war, the regiment was ordered to France. He was mentioned in Sir John French’s despatches of 14th January 1915, for exceedingly good work in carrying messages and maintaining communication under heavy fire at Zillebke in November 1914. He was killed by a rifle bullet in the abdomen in the trenches near Hooge on the eve of his 26th Birthday, during the battle of Frezenburg Ridge, part of the second battle of Ypres. After his death his commanding officer, Major Burt, said that “His splendid example and comradeship would be greatly missed by all ranks in the regiment”. Lieutenant Holt who was serving as acting Adjutant said that “his gallantry was an inspiration to his men and that he was one of the coolest officers that was ever under fire”. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate memorial.

This is a beautiful book, really interesting whether or not you like churches. The service of all the young men and women to whom they are dedicated is crystallised in glass which lets in the light and whose background is the freedom of their element, the sky.
