H. Willis, Ens. 77th Rgt., Corfu, 1842', closely trimmed at upper margins affecting ownership name and occasionally shaving page numbers, engraved bookplate of The Cavalry Club (designed by Nevile Wilkinson) to front pastedown, top edge gilt, late 19th or early 20th-century calf-backed cloth, upper cover detached, small loss to head of spine and a little frayed at foot, small 8vo QTY: (1)NOTE:A rare edition of one of the first, (if not the first), books published by the British in Corfu. In May 1798 the French installed a printing press in Corfu, the first one to be known in modern Greece. Following Napoleon’s abdication in 1814 Corfu came under the control of the British troops on 21 June and this book would seem to have been published shortly afterwards, using the French press. Only two copies of this edition have been located: The British Museum, suggesting the date 1814, and the National Army Museum, which apparently mistakenly giving the date as 1812, at a time when the island and printing press would have been under the control of the French.
