A vintage Royal Navy / Marines style sword. Gilt brass hilt with the Royal Marines badge and folding locking guard. Textured leather grip with wire twist binding. Steel fullered blade with Wilkinson Sword makers mark. Housed in a brass bound leather scabbard. The blade is engraved ‘PO 212151 N.A Finch VC’, which relates Norman Augustus Finch of the Royal Marines. Sergeant Finch earned his Victoria Cross while serving on HMS Vindictive in 1918 while at Zeebrugge. Size: Blade length 77cm, total length in scabbard 91cm. Condition: denting to the brass chape of the scabbard and some degradation of the leather on the scabbard. Some wear to the shagreen grip. Some of the brass mounts on the scabbard are loose. Reuben Ward Binks (British, 1880-1950)'Dumfries Otterhound 'Boatman'' signed and dated 'RWardBinks/1923' (lower right), titled (lower left)watercolour37 x 25.5cm (14 9/16 x 10 1/16in).Footnotes:Wayne Kline writes in his 'History of the Otterhound':'The Dumfriesshire Otter Hunt (DOH) was formed in 1889 by D. J. Bell-Irving, Col. F. Joynson, Mr. Wilson Davidson, Major McKie, Capt. Irving, Mr. Lenny and Mr. Dickson, with a pack of mostly foxhounds. In 1897, Col. Joynson imported from France a Grand Griffon Vendeen bitch Frivole. She produced several litters with the DOH and was then passed on to Edwin Brough, who bred her to Baxter, a pure-bred Bloodhound by Barak out of Ch. Brocade in 1901. The resulting offspring included a rough-coated black and tan male called Boatman, who was given back to the DOH for hunting otter. Boatman was owned by Mr. F. Rayne and was supposedly bred from so extensively that every modern Otterhound traces back to him in several different lines. The Dumfriesshire Otter Hunt, under the direction of Wilson Davidson, later embarked on a program to improve the pack by recruiting Otterhounds from the top packs of the day: Lord Bandon, W.C. Yates, T.L. Wilkinson, the Carlisle, Kendal and District, West Cumberland, Sir Henry Bromley, Edmund Buckley, and others.'The present lot depicts a dog no doubt named in tribute to his famous ancestor. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
