He describes how he never would have believed he could have completed this piece, recounting how he received the 'last sacrament' during the Boer War and was reported dead by the War Office in 1901, later spending time in nine hospitals. Blade with some light tarnishing. Guard with some minor nicks, guard and grip lightly grubby. Scabbard with general age wear dulled patina to metal and leather. The bag is in poor condition but is names 'H West' in pen. The walking cane is in a heavily worn condition.

The later silver plating to the blade has partially obscured the etched decoration and the maker's mark, there is slight wear in parts. Otherwise good.

Blade with patches of light rust, most noticeable near tip. Hilt with some rust spotting and flaking of plating. Fishskin grip with slight wear and apparent damp damage. Scabbard with dent near tip, rust spotting and some flaking of plating.
