WILKINSON JOHN GILBERT (fl. 1830-70) "Horse in a landscape", oil on canvas, signed and dated 1850 lower right, inscribed on label verso "The property of The Late Captain Freestone of St Margaret's South Elmham which was sold for £100 for export to America ......, painted by WJ GILBERT 1860", 49 cm x 62 cm CONDITION REPORTS There is crazing and cracking throughout, particularly noticeable to the horse itself. In need of a clean. Areas of dirt and some scratches, etc. There is a small, almost hole, to the bottom right hand corner and another two along the bottom edge. Has possibly been cleaned and re-varnished in the past. There are some drip marks particularly visible under UV but also with the naked eye. There are also some marks to the canvas in line with the stretchers on the reverse. There is damage to the frame with losses. General wear and tear conducive with age and use. Queen’s Own Cameron Highlander’s Officer’s Dirk. A fine gilded example made by Henry Wilkinson with a steel 280mm blade etched ‘Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London’ with faceted top, double fullered, etched crowned regimental crest with Egypt sphinx below, vacant shield cartouche, the opposite side with battle honours, with ebonised wooden grip carved with basket weave and inset with brass studs, the opposite side with crossed swords and bonnet, the gilded metal mounts finely embossed and chased with thistles, with a faceted amber glass pommel, overall length 420mm, in its black leather scabbard with gilded metal mounts stamped 'R.&H.B. Kirkwood, 66 & 68 Thistle St. Edinburgh' with queen's crown, with integral bi-knife and fork each with yellow glass pommel, very good condition £1,400-£1,800 --- This is an age restricted lot: the successful buyer will be required to either collect in person, or arrange specialist shipping.
Family Group: Three: Able Seaman F. W. E. Bullen, Royal Navy British War and Victory Medals (J. 83345 F. W. E. Bullen. A.B. R.N.); London Private Fire Brigade Association Long Service Medal (316) extremely fine Imperial Service Medal, E.II.R., 1st issue (Richard Augustus Bullen), on original mounting pin for wear, extremely fine (4) £70-£90 --- Francis William Ewart Bullen, a banknote printer with Messrs. Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. Ltd., was born in Hoxton, London, on 30 June 1898. He attested into the Royal Navy on 15 December 1916, for service during the Great War and served afloat in H.M.S. Retriever and H.M.S. Taurus, serving off the Belgian coast. Demobilised on 12 February 1919, he joined the London Private Fire Brigades Association as member of the the Brigade run by his employers. He was awarded his Bronze Long Service Medal in 1929 and later retired as an active member on 31 December 1943. The grant of a silver medal was made to the recipient on 26 May 1949. He died aged 94, on the Isle of Wight, in September 1992. Richard Augustus Bullen, brother of the above, was awarded the Imperial Service Medal upon his retirement from the General Post Office (London Gazette 20 July 1956). He died in Southwark, London, in 1972. Sold with a very detailed article published in The Orders and Medals Research Society Journal in June 2011, in relation to the award of these medals, together with copied photographs and detailed copied research.
Fighting Knife. A Second War first pattern Fairburn-Sykes Commando fighting knife, complete with original brown leather scabbard, by Messrs. Wilkinson Sword Co. Ltd., London, the 170mm steel blade etched on the ricasso 'The F-S Fighting Knife.', the opposite side with the Wilkinson Sword crossed swords trademark, the iconic ‘S’ crossguard and chequered steel grip, overall length 300mm, a very good example of this iconic and highly sought after knife, some light rust spots, overall very good condition £1,400-£1,800 --- This is an age restricted lot: the successful buyer will be required to either collect in person, or arrange specialist shipping.
Rare George V Royal Tank Regiment Marked 1897 Pattern Officers Sword by Henry Wilkinson Attributed to Major Hugh Graham Neish Royal Tank Regiment, fine Infantry officers sword with George V cipher incorporated to the guard, shagreen covered grip with wire binding. Black leather portepee attached to the grip and housed in regimental pattern black leather scabbard. Blade remains in excellent condition which retains much of the original polished finish. Etched with standard decoration and additional regimental badge of the Royal Tank Regiment. Initials ‘H.C.N’ etched to the reverse panel. Blade by Wilkinson sword and numbered to the spine ‘46507’. Vendor attributes the sword to Major Hugh Graham Neish. Blade 82cms, overall 102cms. A rare and hard to find sword.The charity for blind ex-servicemen and women St Dunstan’s gives the following information in the St Dunstan’s Review – ‘Hugh Graham Neish Royal Tank Regiment – Major H. G. Neish, of London, died at Pearson House on the 15th April, 1975. He was 77 years of age. He served in the Regular Army from 1915 until he retired in 1948. His sight ultimately failed and he was very seriously ill by the time he came to St. Dunstan's and went to Pearson House a few months ago. He was a single man with no immediate family.
Scarce Wilkinson Sword Etched Blade 3rd Pattern Fairbairn Sykes (F.S) Commando Knife, well worn example of a 3rd pattern commando knife with black painted one piece ribbed grip and unmarked oval cross guard. Double edged blade with Wilkinson Sword makers mark to one side and ‘THE F.S. FIGHTING KNIFE’ to the other. Blade is also etched to the centre with a panel bearing the name ‘LT COL. M STEFFEN’. Blade shows wear, no scabbard. Blade length 17cms, overall 29cms. Lieutenant Colonel M Steffen, is possibly served as part of the US armed forces. Worthy of further research. Similar example shown on page 121 of ‘The Fairbairn-Sykes Fighting Knife and Other Commando Knives’ by Ron Flook.
WW2 British Nickel Plated 2nd Pattern Fairbairn Sykes (F.S) Commando Knife by Wilkinson Sword Co Ltd, good example with nickel plated knurled grip and oval cross guard. Housed in its original leather scabbard with nickel plated chape, leather leg tabs absent, belt loop with elasticated strap. Good double edged blade with etched Wilkinson Sword Co Ltd London makers mark and reverse etched ‘THE F-S FIGHTING KNIFE’. The blade measures 17 ¼ cms.
WW2 British 1st Pattern Fairbairn Sykes (F.S) Commando Knife by Wilkinson Sword Co Ltd, good used example of the desirable 1st pattern commando knife, having nickel plated knurled grip and top nut. ‘S’ type nickel plated guard. Housed in its original leather scabbard with nickel plated lower chape. Leather leg tabs absent but the belt loop still has the securing strap with press button snap. Double edged blade etched with Wilkinson Sword Co Ltd London makers mark and the reverse ‘THE F-S FIGHTING KNIFE’. Blade shows some wear with the makers mark and FS etchings rubbed. Blade measures 16 ½ cms, overall 31 ¼ cms.
Late Victorian Naval Officers Sword by Henry Wilkinson Pall Mall London, No.35454 (for 1898) signed blade 80.5cms etched with crowned Royal Arms, fouled anchor, and bands of fruiting oak within rope borders, regulation hilt engraved with owner’s initials GFWG inside the guard, wire bound fish skin covered grip, folding side guard, in its leather scabbard (creased) with brass mounts including maker’s shield to locket. Good condition, blade with small areas of light pitting, some age wear overall.
1827 Pattern Rifle Officers Sword of the Kent Rifle Volunteers by Henry Wilkinson Pall Mall London No10887, signed regulation blade 83cms etched with crowned VR and strung bugle amidst scrolling foliage with owner’s crest, initials A.W., regulation iron guard (pitted and cleaned) wire bound fish skin covered grip, in steel scabbard (heavily cleaned). 1887 Pattern Heavy Cavalry Officers Presentation Undress Sword by Henry Wilkinson Pall Mall London No. 6416 (for 1855), regulation signed blade 92cms etched with crowned VR amidst scrolling foliage with FWA to CN and the owner’s crest a fist grasping a broken hammer within garter inscribed with motto NON ARTE SED MARTE, regulation pierced iron guard, silver wire bound fish skin covered grip, in its steel scabbard unusually numbered inside the nickel throat piece 6416. Good condition.
Indian Army 1897 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword by Wilkinson Sword, blade numbered ‘65827’. Hilt of universal pattern with crowned ‘EIR’ to the guard, shagreen grip with wire binding. Housed in brown leather scabbard with metal lower chape. Stamped with initials ‘A.T.S’ to the underside of the guard. Regulation blade with etched decoration. The blade measures 82cms. Hilt heavily pitted and covered in Verdigris. Housed in foul weather sword cover.
