* Two Victorian 1856 Pattern Pioneer Sawback Swords, each with 58 cm sawback blade stamped `Wilkinson, London`, with inspectors and War Department stamps, brass stirrup hilt guard, solid ribbed grip and down-swept quillon, 70cm overall, each in its brown leather scabbard with brass mounts stamped `Mole` The 1856 Pattern Pioneer sword was feared by many but was not primarily designed for this reason. Pioneers were a crucial part of any regiment and this type of sword was deemed of great importance, assisting the men with preparing defensive works, constructing military accommodation and clearing trees and pathways. M.C.C. tour of Australia 1932/33. ‘Bodyline tour’. Large original and impressive colour travel poster of the ‘Orient Line. R.M.S. Orontes’ by artist Norman Wilkinson. The poster mounted with original artists mount with title ‘’Orient Line. R.M.S. Orontes. Off the Cliffs of Dover’ and ‘Norman Wilkinson, R.A.’ to right hand border. The lower border has hand written title ‘M.C.C. Australian Tour 1932-1933’ and is nicely signed in black ink by eighteen members of the touring party. Signatures are Douglas Jardine (Captain), Hammond, Brown, Voce, Wyatt, Ames, Duckworth, Paynter, Pataudi, Larwood, Bowes, Allen, Verity, Leyland, Sutcliffe, Mitchell and the joint Managers P.F. Warner and R.C.N. Palairet. Lacking the signature of Tate from the full touring party. To the right of Jardine’s signature is a small original head and shoulders caricature drawing, in pencil, of Jardine wearing his infamous Harlequin cap. Initials ‘A.M.’ (Arthur Mailey) to side. The colour image measures 21”x14” and overall 28”x22”. Very minor foxing to both image and mount otherwise in good/very good condition. Norman Wilkinson (1878-1991) was a British artist who usually worked in oils, watercolors and drypoint. He was primarily a marine painter, but he was also an illustrator, poster artist, and wartime camouflager. During World War I, Wilkinson was the first to propose the use of disruptive coloration in naval camouflage, for which he coined the well-known term “dazzle painting” or dazzle camouflage. Throughout his life, he was a prolific poster artist, designing numerous posters for the London and North Western Railway, and the London Midland and Scottish Railway
