Consequently, this lot is sold as viewed. O.B.E. London Gazette 1 January 1919: ‘For valuable services rendered in connection with military operations in France and Flanders.’ M.C. London Gazette 18 February 1915: ‘For services rendered in connection with Operations in the Field.’ John James Bulman attested for the Royal Engineers and served in South Africa during the Boer War with the Telegraph Battalion. He was later selected for appointment to the Sudan Government Telegraphs in Khartoum under Colonel E. V. Turner, and rapidly gained promotion to the rank of Inspector, returning home in 1910. Advanced Company Sergeant Major, Bulman served with the 3rd Light Railway Signal Company, Royal Engineers, during the Great War on the Western Front from 24 August 1914, and was Mentioned in Field Marshal Sir John French’s Despatch of 14 January 1915 (London Gazette 17 February 1915). Awarded a scarce Warrant Officer’s Military Cross, he was commissioned Second Lieutenant on 18 April 1915, and was promoted Lieutenant on 26 June 1915, and Captain on 11 June 1916. Twice further Mentioned by Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig in his Despatches of 7 November 1917 and 8 November 1918 (London Gazettes 14 December 1917 and 23 December 1918), for his services during the Great War he was created an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 1919 New Year’s Honours’ List. Post-War he served as Captain and Adjutant of the 54th East Anglian Divisional Signals (Territorial Army), and died in Devon on 16 June 1925. Sold with the recipient’s 1895 pattern Sword, by Wilkinson, London, numbered 50457 and etched ‘Royal Engineers’ on blade, with G.V.R. cypher to hilt, with leather scabbard ands sword knot. John Reginald Bulman, the son of Captain John James Bulman and his wife Rose Agatha Ford Bulman, was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 2nd Derbyshire Yeomanry, Royal Armoured Corps, on 12 March 1944. He served during the Second World War in North West Europe post-D-Day, and died of wounds in Normandy on 12 August 1944, aged 21, being posthumously Mentioned in Despatches ‘in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in North West Europe’ (London Gazette 10 May 1945). He is buried in Bayeux War Cemetery; his headstone reads: ‘John - So greatly loved and honoured. ARR Henry Wilkinson (1921-2011) A Collection of five gun dog etchings, including a yellow labrador with duck, Springer Spaniel flushing a Snipe, Black Labrador flushing Ducks, a Sportsman with Golden Retriever and a Pheasant, and a Golden Retriever scenting Grey Partridges, signed and numbered in pencil, colour etchings, (total 5)Condition:The etchings are all mounted and framed under glazing - not examined external to the frames. THe sheets are in good condition, no obvious losses, tears or creasing. Full margins are present with clear platemarks. The prints are crisp and well preserved, the surface appearing stable and colours well preserved. The print with the black labrador and ducks shows some general minor ageing (browning) to the sheet and has some fine sports of foxing in the top left and margin. The print with the red retriever and partridges shows some foxing to the top right and isolated spots in the margin, minor cockling.

Rare George IV silver perpetual desk calendar, in the form of a hexagonal date column, with revolving days of the week, on an engraved domed base (Birmingham 1827) possibly John Wilkinson. 9cm overall height.General overall condition good, some minor surface wear, dents and scratching, no splits or signs of major damage or repair, there are some small dents to fluted part of column, base is slightly bent and does not sit square, finial may have been resoldered, no additional engraving. Marks rubbed.
Victorian silver butter dish with frosted cut glass liner modelled as a wooden barrel, the finial in the form of a seated cow, (Sheffield 1861), maker Henry Wilkinson, 9ozs, base 18cm in diameter.General overall condition reasonable, silver has some surface wear, scratching and denting, cover is slightly bent, cow is loose and retaining nut will not tighten, body also has an indentation on the back where retaining nut has been over tightened in the past, base slightly uneven. Glass dish is badly damaged and has been glued.
