Northumberland Fusiliers Victorian Regimental Pattern Officer’s Sword by Wilkinson of London. A rare example, with “dumbbell” blade by H Wilkinson (No. 38364 denoting manufacture in 1900) bearing foliate decoration, VR cypher and Royal Arms, Prince of Wales’s plumes and initials “WG”. Regulation 1897 Pattern guard with appliquŽ grenade bearing St George on the ball. Wire-bound shagreen grip and plaited brown leather sword-knot. Housed in its brown pigskin scabbard with plated steel mouthpiece and chape. Traces of rust and pitting to blade, plating of guard slightly defective. Minor wear to shagreen of grip. Frog-tab of scabbard absent. Complete with original brown leather storage bag. The initials WG on the blade, which also appear on the brown leather outer cover, are probably those of William Gibson, who transferred from the Militia to the Northumberland Fusiliers in 1900.
Royal Engineers Attributed Victorian Officer’s Sword and Court Sword Mounted into a Period Display Case. A magnificent example of the 1857 Pattern by Henry Wilkinson, with extremely fine slightly curved fullered blade (No.5280, indicating 1854) bearing foliate decoration, VR cypher, Thunderbolt and crest and motto of the Grant family. Hilt with gilt-brass scroll pattern guard, black shagreen grip with gilt wire binding, and chequered pommel. Housed in its gilt-brass scabbard with white metal shoe ... Together with a Civil Uniform sword with regulation cast beaded metal hilt, the point of the blade now seized in the chape of its black leather scabbard ... and a Staff Officer’s gold and red flecked aiguillette. All mounted into a 19th Century glazed mahogany wall hanging display cabinet with hinged lid. (3 items) This sword is almost certainly that of Lieutenant (later Lieutenant General Sir) Robert Grant, who was educated at Harrow and RMA Woolwich before being commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1854. He held a number of appointments, including that of Chief Engineer in the 1885 Sudan Expedition, becoming Inspector General of Fortifications in 1891. The relative dates of the blade and hilt of this sword indicate that Grant must have had the weapon re-hilted in or after 1857 to conform to the new pattern of hilt.
