Original Watercolour “The Imperial German Navy Zeppelin LZ 12” – Norman Wilkinson. A lovely mounted, framed and glazed original watercolour (45cmx43cm) of L12 (misnamed as LZ12 in the title), in company with 2 other German Rigid Airships crossing a coastline. Signed at lower left “Norman Wilkinson”, the mounting has the following description “Norman Wilkinson, CME, PRI, ROI, 1878 – 1971.” Followed by the title. On the reverse are several yellowed typewritten sheets, pasted onto the hardboard backing, giving information on the picture, the artist and the Airship L12. Regarding this picture, the text reads “This watercolour is signed on the face and inscribed on the reverse – the other two Zeppelins shown are identified as the LZ11 and LZ15. It also bears on the reverse an official War Department stamp showing that it must have been used for instructional purposes during the War - possibly reproduced as a print. Almost certainly the artist was acting under orders when he painted this.”(sic).The artist, Norman Wilkinson, is best known as an Illustrator for the Illustrated London News, and a poster artist, particularly of marine works. In 1948 he was awarded the CBE for the work he contributed to the art of Camouflage, particularly the development of “Dazzle Camouflage” for the marine environment (WW1) and Airfield Camouflage in the second World War 2. Imperial German Navy Airship L12 (LZ43) was an early “P” class Zeppelin. On 10 August 1915, under the command of Oberleutnant Werner Peterson (later the final commander of L32), the L12 was part of a raid on England. Damaged by Anti-Aircraft fire, and losing buoyancy, L12 crash-landed in the English Channel 4 hours later. At day-break, L12 was taken under tow by a German torpedo-boat and despite the best efforts of the RNAS, was towed into Ostende by noon. During salvage work, the remaining hydrogen exploded, burning out much of the hull. This is a lovely picture by a renowned artist. See Plate 5
