ENGLISH RESTORATION: FINCH HENEAGE (1635-1689) Earl of Winchilsea, Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports 1660. D.S., Winchilsea, one page, folio, n.p., n.d. (1660). The manuscript document is an affidavit issued on the restoration of King Charles II and concerns Robert Wilkinson, 'clerke....of episcopall ordination, of pious & sober conversation, orthodox in judgement, conformable to ye doctrine & discipline of ye Church of England & in all these revolutions of time hath continued very loyall to our gratious Soveraigne & eminently active for his sacred Majestys happy restauration.' Signed by Winchilsea at the foot and countersigned by a further eight Royalists including Sir John Boys (1607-1664, Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports 1646-48, Governor of Donnington Castle during the Civil War), Sir Thomas Peyton (d.1683, Member of Parliament) and Sir Arnold Braems (Flemish merchant) as well as four parish priests. Book of Hours, 15th Century Illuminated Manuscript on Vellum, 78 leaves with three arched miniatures within decorative borders, seven 4-line miniatures within capitals and decorative borders, and one foliate capital within a border; 15 lines to a page. The order is: f.1 arched panel of St John in a landscape with the eagle (slight rubbing), f.16 capital showing the Annunciation or Visitation, f.27v capital showing the Nativity, f.32v capital showing the Angel's Announcement to the Shepherds, f.36v capital showing the Adoration, f.41v capital showing the Flight into Egypt, f.47v capital showing the Coronation of the Virgin (?), f.51 3-line gilt foliate capital within a border, f.53 capital showing the Deposition, f.59 arched panel showing Christ carrying the Cross (repair strip to head, slight loss, smudged and discoloured), f.78 (final leaf) arched panel showing the Crucifixion. Most pages with gilt, blue and red decorated initials (some are 2-line), incomplete, faults, possibly Use of Rouen, lacking all before and mainly comprising The Hours of the Virgin, Litany (incomplete), the final miniature being the first and only page of The Hours of the Cross, late 19th century fine morocco gilt binding, leaf size 176 x 125mm approximately. Book of Hours, Use of Coutances, 15th Century Illuminated Manuscript on Vellum, without Miniatures; 170 leaves only, some omissions, mostly 12 lines, with Calendar showing particular references for Coutances, and final leaf with the commemoration service to St Manuaeus, many initials in red and blue (some 2-line); some margins with early manuscript comments or notes, shields and doodles; leaf size 180 x 127mm approximately. Provenance: The 'Le Sauvage' family with their various names written on several margins including the date '1598' to f.10v; with Bernard Quaritch in the later 19th century with a printed catalogue entry clipping of this volume when described in a different binding and as having Miniatures; the Wilkinson family, Kingston, Cambridge - acquired by the vendor's great grandfather, Robert Corke, when financial director of Gossages Soaps, and bound for him in Liverpool (the fine morocco gilt binding unsigned)

Militaria - A commemorative Bowie knife by Wilkinson and Son of Sheffield, the clip back, 31cm plated steel blade etched 'For Service To The American People, 1852-1877, Wells Fargo Express Company, in its lined oak case; a folding bowie knife, brass mounted with horn handle, the 13cm steel blade marked Sheffield Steel, 23cm overall. A Vic officer's broadsword of The Q Own Cameron Highlanders, DE claymore blade 32" by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall London, no 26024 (for 1885), etched with crown, regimental title, "79" and owner's crest and motto "Dulcis pr Patria Labor" (McKerrill) within foliate panels, regulation steel basket hilt with bars and panels pierced with hearts, wirebound fishskin grip. Basically GC (dark patina to blade, hilt silver painted, worthy of careful cleaning). Clarice Cliff: a small cream jug of conical form raised on four square feet with one foot formed as the handle, the interior decorated with a handpainted floral band in brown, orange, blue and green, the exterior with banded yellow and green and the feet and rim in bright orange. A Victorian officers sword, straight double edged blade engraved 'Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London' and also engraved 'The Royal Scots Lothian Regiment', with gilt metal pierced basket guard and wire bound fish skin grip in its metal scabbard and one another sword, detailed 'Morris Angel & Son' (2).

Engraved title, frontispiece, coloured double page maps of the Northern and Southern hemispheres, folding distance table, coloured map of France, map showing the main routes of the country, coloured circular plan of Paris (torn at fold), partly coloured map of the environs of the city, and plan of Versailles. Containing contemporary MS notes in English, including riddles, apparently by William Wilkinson, who lived in the Midlands.
A Victorian oak bookcase by Wilkinson & Son, the moulded cavetto cornice above three glazed doors each with carved rosettes, enclosing adjustable shelves, flanked by leaf carved spiral twist and fluted columns, the side with a door to access an integral space for maps or folios, above two drawers the centre with a hinged pull-down front fitted a shelf, stamped 'WILKINSON & SON, 4591, 8 OLD BOND STREET', 78in (198cm) h, 75in (190cm) w, 15.75in (40cm) d. Losses to mouldings.
Ensuite to the previous lot: A Victorian oak bookcase, by Wilkinson & Son, the moulded cornice above a pair of double glazed doors enclosing adjustable shelves, each door with carved rosettes, flanked by leaf carved, spiral twist fluted columns, the locks stamped 'R.L & Co', on a plinth base, 51in (129.8cm) h, 84.25in (213.8cm) w, 17.25in (43.5cm) d.
