A late 19th century Indian silver three piece tea service, by Grish Chunder Dutt, Calcutta, of good gauge, decorated in high relief with native figures in rural landscapes with trees and thatched buildings on a sanded ground, the handles and spout modelled as elephant trunks, the teapot finial designed as a figure on a elephant, each piece stamped to the base with maker's mark 'GRISH CHUNDER DUTT, BHOWANIPORE, CALCUTTA', teapot with ivory insulators, height of teapot approximately 15cm. £600-£800 --- Provenance: Grish Chunder Dutt & Sons were one of the best and most prolific silversmiths working in Bhowanipore, a suburb of Calcutta, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The firm was established in 1872 and became known for their distinctive local style of decoration, depicting rural scenes of Bengal village life and local religious traditions, possibly resulting from the 1883 Calcutta International Exhibition which encouraged the development of regional styles, as opposed to the British inspired Colonial style of silverwork prevalent in the 19th century. Literature: Wilkinson, Wynyard: Indian Silver 1858-1947, London 1999, pages 55-57. Ivory Submission reference HH9FK8SC. Condition Report Good condition, with only very light rubbing to raised surfaces. Teapot with ivory insulators. Total weight 40oz.

A very rare early example, the blade with the number 5035 (1854) representing the first year of the register of blade numbers which started at 5001. Housed in an early pattern brown leather scabbard with nickel rounded chape. Tailored with leather and nickel stud retaining strap and complete with four tangs. 1912 pattern attributed EIIR Cavalry Officer's sword by Wilkinson London A very good and scarce post 1953 example by Wilkinson Sword of London. The blade, numbered 86894 (1964), is etched with a Crowned EIIR Cypher and scrolling foliage decoration and the owners initials G A H. The hilt is of the regulation pattern, with simulated shagreen grip with twist wire binding. Housed in brown leather field service scabbard. Remains in very clean condition, a few stains to the tip of the blade and with a little attention could be returned to parade condition. The vendor states this was carried by a Mr George Hampton.

The forte with cutler's details of Wilkinson of London and the back of the blade with the number 13643 (1865). Gilt metal fixed guard with crowned VR cypher, shagreen grip with copper twist wire binding. Housed in original black leather and gilt mounted scabbard. GC Etching clear minor wear. The Wilkinson records confirm that sword was purchased on the 27th January 1865.
