After Augustus Edwin JOHN (1878-1961)Portrait of Euphemia LambInscribed 'John'26.5 x 25.2cmNote: This work would appear to be a copy or a version of portrait of Lamb by John held in a private collection and featured in the BBC documentary 'The Mountain that had to be Painted', although not an exact copy (there are noticeable differences in the neckline, treatment of the hair, position of signature etc). Whilst this work is undoubtedly by an extremely competent hand, it has been assessed by Rebecca John and rejected as not being by the hand of her Grandfather. We have no provenance regarding when and where David Wilkinson acquired the drawing and as such, we offer it with no assurances. We are grateful to Rebecca John for her assistance with cataloguing this work.Post Script: Since first cataloguing this work we have found amongst David Wilkinson's papers an account detailing how he acquired this drawing. It was the property of a now relatively unknown artist, Gerald William Tooby (1893-1984). In the early 1920s Tooby lived in Chelsea and Kensington and supported himself as an artist. He was also an assistant to Jacob Epstein and Frank Branwyn. Moving in these circles and living in Chelsea at this time, it is not at all implausible that he knew Augustus John.
