A LARGE FRAMED JAPANESE IMARI SHALLOW BOWLMeiji PeriodThe large bowl with underglazed chrysanthemums, hand painted gilt clouds and foliate forms reside on a deep cobalt blue lobed ground. The lobes are outlined with a black and brick red glazed border featuring a phoenix with wings spread and flowing tail feathers while perched on a stumpy flowering tree with gilt highlights and cobalt underglazed trunk, all on a white ground. The bowl is surrounded by a thick black lacquered moulded frame with hand painted gilt floral forms. cursively inscribed on underside “2390” and “20130”.Condition: No chips evident on charger. A PAIR OF CHINESE CINNABAR ELEPHANT SEATS20th CenturyThe red oxide lacquer is built up over a wooden base of the ceremonial elephant forms with their heads and tusks pointed downward, trunk raised up and ears pinned back. The stalwart creatures feature incised seats and tasseled saddle blankets with an allover pattern of fretwork, shells, foliate forms and clouds. The sides of the blankets each feature the incised motif of a vase of flowers on a delicate pine needle ground.Condition: Very minor chips. A carved oak longcase clock: having an eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the twelve-inch square brass dial having a raised chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals and blued steel hands, the centre engraved with c-scroll decoration and maker`s name `John Smith, Chester`, with a subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, with cast-brass `female-head` spandrels to the corners, the flat-top oak case with carved decoration, having a serpentine moulding to the top of the trunk door and fluted columns to the hood, height: 202cm. * John Smith is a well-regarded Cheshire maker who is recorded as working in the mid-1700`s.
